WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) awarded a grant of $758,000 on June 8, 2005, to the state of Washington for an addition to the kitchen at the state veterans home in Spokane.

“This grant honors our commitment to care for the men and women who have served in uniform,” said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs.  “Our federal-state partnership helps to provide a comfortable home for some Washington veterans.”

The $758,000 grant will pay up to 65 percent of the cost to expand the kitchen addition in Spokane.  Overall cost of the project is estimated at $1.1 million.

Washington state also operates veterans homes in Puyallup Valley near Orting and Retsil near Port Orchard.  The homes are available to veterans who currently reside in Washington State and were honorably discharged from the U. S. armed forces during both wartime and peacetime.  

In fiscal year 2004, VA spent more than $1.6 billion in Washington to serve over 632,000 veterans who live in the state.  VA operates major medical centers in SeattleSpokane and Walla Walla with outpatient clinics and Vet Centers in many locations.  VA health care was provided to 91,548 people in Washington during 2004.
