WASHINGTON – Veterans in South Carolina will have access to 220 beds in a state nursing home, thanks to a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to the South Carolina State Veterans Home in Walterboro.
“This grant reflects the federal-state partnership that is honoring our commitment to care for the men and women who have served in uniform,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi. “This partnership provides a comfortable home for veterans in a time of great personal need.”
The $18.5 million grant will pay up to 65 percent of the cost to construct a new nursing home for veterans. The overall cost of the project is approximately $28.5 million.
In fiscal year 2002, VA spent nearly $908 million in South Carolina to serve over 415,000 state veterans. VA operates major medical centers in Charleston and Columbia with combined inpatient admissions of over 8,000 annually and more than 741,000 outpatient visits per year.
