WASHINGTON – Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi today expressed condolences to the family of retired Marine Gen. Raymond G. Davis, who died Sept. 4.

“Gen. Davis will be remembered as a brave Marine and a true friend of veterans,” said Principi.  “He was a dedicated leader in the military, in veterans issues and in his local community.”

Gen. Davis worked tirelessly for the creation of the Korean War Veterans Memorial.  Veterans established the Gen. Ray Davis Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association in his local community.

Gen. Davis ended his military service as assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, the nation’s second-highest ranking Marine.  He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam and retired as a four-star general in 1972.

Gen. Davis received the Medal of Honor for commanding troops in the 1950 battle of Chosin Reservoir in Korea. He was also awarded the Navy Cross, two Distinguished Service Medals, two Silver Stars, two Legion of Merit awards, a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and other awards.

“His many distinctions and decorations are indicative of his hard work and integrity,” Principi said.  “Veterans have lost a formidable advocate.”
