VA Nurse and formerly homeless Veteran: ‘For every bad thing you hear that goes on at the VA, there’s a thousand great things that go on there that you will never hear about’

Today Little Rock’s Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System nurse and Veteran David Hathcock works in the same hospital that helped him pull his life together after becoming addicted to drugs and losing “everything” including his home and car.

His story, as reported on this morning’s Fox and Friends, was one of drug addiction that led him 10 years ago to seek help and overcome his addiction at the VA Medical Center in Little Rock.

Hathcock details in the story that, as a result of his addiction, “they repossessed my house, I had no car, no phone, no friends…I mean I lost everything.”

He credits VA for his being able to emerge from addiction to become a top-rated registered nurse, serving fellow Veterans after becoming “hopeless” and “unemployable.”

The VA “gave me the opportunity to change my life and continues to this day to help me change my life,” Hathcock told Fox. “The VA’s been there the whole time.”

Hathcock said his “main message to all of America” is “that for every bad thing you hear that goes on at the VA, there’s a thousand great things that go on there that you will never hear about.”

“David Hathcock’s story serves as an inspiration to all of us at VA,” said Acting VA Secretary Robert Wilkie. “No matter the course their lives may take, Veterans can turn to VA to find help and recover to serve meaningful roles in their communities. It is gratifying that VA played such an important role for David and it’s a testament to his character and leadership that he would give back to his fellow Veterans through his important work at VA.”
