WEBB CITY, Mo. – Homeless veterans in the Joplin area will have greater access to vital services, thanks to a major grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to a Webb City organization.

A senior official of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) today made a check presentation for $415,619 to The House, Inc., to support its program for homeless veterans.

“Only through a dedicated partnership with community-based organizations like The House can we hope to end chronic homelessness among veterans,” said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. “The good news is that VA is making great progress to address this issue and has helped reduce the number of chronically homeless veterans by more than 60,000 in the last 10 years alone.

“Our progress is real and significant, but we must and will continue to do more,” Nicholson added. “This funding for The House is another example of VA’s commitment to address veteran homelessness.”

Nicholson was represented at the check presentation by Pete Dougherty, director of VA’s homeless veterans programs.  Dougherty presented a ceremonial check to Tom Hubbs, executive director of The House, Inc.

VA is the only federal agency offering substantial hands-on assistance directly to the homeless.  About 200,000 veterans may be homeless on any night.

The Webb City grant was among 72 distributed nationwide by VA, valued at nearly $14 million.
