WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded a contract worth $52.2 million to a Costa Mesa firm for seismic improvements to the Department’s San Diego hospital.

“This project will ensure that California’s veterans continue to receive safe, world-class health care in our San Diego facility,” said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. “As VA enters its 75th year, the San Diego medical center continues its proud tradition of serving America’s heroes.”

Clark Construction Group of Costa Mesa received a contract for seismic corrections to the 855,000-square-foot Building 1 at the VA San Diego Healthcare System.  The project will include new stair towers and creation of a braced-frame system for the building.

VA’s San Diego facility provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services to nearly a quarter million veterans.

Last year, VA spent more than $6 billion to provide health care, disability compensation, memorial benefits and other services to more than 2.3 million California veterans.  VA operates 10 major medical centers in California with outpatient clinics and Vet Centers in many communities.
