Martinsburg VA was recently named to the prestigious Leading Disabilities Employers list, which is appointed by the National Organization on Disability (NOD). NOD recognizes the employers that are committed to building an inclusive workforce by adopting exemplary employment practices for people with disabilities.
In the U.S., one in five adults has a disability. At Martinsburg VA, over 13% of its workforce reports a disability and most of them are Veterans. Veteran employees with disabilities include service-related injuries such as traumatic brain injury, hearing and vision impairment, missing extremities, mobility impairment and more.
“We are proud of our dedication to administering reasonable accommodation and special emphasis programs,” says Craig Perkins, Equal Employment Opportunity manager. “These programs give us the ability to sufficiently recruit, staff and train persons with disabilities.”
Disability related training provided to staff
To reach this accomplishment, the medical center provides disability-related training to its management team, new managers and supervisors.
“The EEO Office also administers face-to-face trainings throughout the year, including the special guidelines set forth by the use of Schedule A hiring authority,” says Perkins.
This designation was bestowed in October during National Disability Employment Awareness Month, marking the third consecutive year for the medical center. The monthly observance dates back to WWII when returning service members with disabilities wanted to find work in order to continue their life of service to the nation.
Martinsburg creative working environment lets employees with disabilities thrive
This is especially significant to Martinsburg VA, which was established in 1944 to care for those servicemen returning from WWII. The medical center treasures its legacy of employment practices to include people with disabilities in the workforce. By being creative in making the workplace environment more accessible, employees with disabilities can thrive.
“It is important that we create an inclusive and diverse workplace where employees with disabilities are not only hired but have every ability to succeed,” says Kenneth Allensworth, Medical Center director.
