PGA HOPE—Helping Our Patriots Everywhere—is introducing and teaching golf to Veterans and active duty military to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. PGA HOPE is the flagship military program of PGA REACH, the 501(c)(3) charitable foundation of the PGA of America.
The beauty of PGA HOPE is you can truly come as you are—no clubs and no prior golf experience are required. The program uses golf as a way to create a welcoming environment for Veterans who are looking to build community and find wellness. Whether they are brand new to the game or returning to it, all Veterans are invited and encouraged to participate. The program is free and led exclusively by PGA professionals who are trained in adaptive golf and military cultural competency. PGA HOPE programs are available in 47 states at more than 340 locations. Find a program near you today.
Golf has seen a massive spike in participation and popularity in the last four years. According to recent National Golf Foundation reports on the industry, more than 119 million Americans were exposed to the game and 42 million participated in the game this past year.
Of these 42 million players, thousands of Veterans across the country are turning to golf and using the sport as therapeutic rehabilitation through PGA HOPE.
Chris Nowak, PGA of America Military & Veteran liaison, explains how the program is more about the journey a Veteran experiences going through the program than the game of golf.
“When you’re on the golf course, you have to be singularly focused on the task at-hand—which in this case is to get a little white ball into a hole in the ground,” Nowak said. “We encourage the Veterans to find that moment in time because this is part of the rehabilitation process, to forget about everything else that is going on outside of the golf to provide a moment of clarity.”
PGA HOPE is a way forward. The program will serve 11,000 Veterans across the country in 2023, with new locations opening almost every month. At the forefront of these programs are local PGA professionals who are experts in teaching the game. These men and women are the tangible connection to the game and have dedicated their careers to ensuring there are more people playing and enjoying the sport. There are currently more than 1,400 PGA professionals in the country who have been trained to lead a PGA HOPE program at their facility.
Scott Reinhart, a PGA Teaching Professional, who recently established one of the first PGA HOPE programs in Hawaii, says his passion has always been to engage larger communities in the game.
“The joy that our Veterans express during PGA HOPE is something that I think every golfer experiences in their own way,” explained Reinhart. “I’ve experienced so much good from my own golf journey, and I want to make sure these Veterans experience all the same great things that come with playing golf.”

I was able, through someone in the comments section, to actually go to a site I hadn’t found in the article, and located the calendar for San Antonio, TX. This is was it https://www.stpgareach.org/san-antonio and I found one course that offers the program later in the year. I could not go in two days, so that works great for me.
But it took several trips around the block using the article links in order for me to come back and scour the comments section.
This isn’t the first time I’ve had these kinds of issues with the VA newsletter. I’m sure they are working on this all the time, to make it right. mmm hmm. Well, I hope they are.

For those who want to get out and play golf look into the Hero Golf Tour. Veterans and first responders have 3 ways they can participate 1. Go out and play golf for free. 2. Become a registered active tour player and 3. Sign up to be a registered active tour player and earn extra points for being a Gardian player. The tournamenst are fun and you to meet more veterans in the process and it helps veterans and first responders with PTSD.

I live in San Antonio, TX. Is this opportunity available to Veteran Spouses? I’ve always felt like, we as spouses get overlooked. Yes, I understand that our spouses have fought in wars, multiple deployments, various diagnoses, loss of limbs etc., and my heart truly goes out to ALL of our HEROES. I’ve been under so much stress, anxiety, depression, abuse and loss. I don’t feel noticed or validated for all that I’ve been through and going through. My husband suffers from PTSD and oftentimes I feel like I have to walk on eggshells in my own home in order to protect him. My husband and I will be married 35 years in July and 26 of those years are military service. I said all of that to say this….I HAVE PTSD TOO
I’ve held in a-lot, suffered and have gone through so much alone mostly for the sake of our children. I’m emotionally, mentally and physically drained yet I still place everyone’s needs ahead of my own.
I would love to enjoy a free golf clinic or anything I can do to relax my mind.

The lessons are at Goodwin Park in Hartford and they’re looking for a second course down by the shore for this year. Absolutely loved the program. Took the course last fall. Fixed a lot of aspects of my game, but if you new to the sport, this program is a must. There is an interactive map that will hopefully give you the information you need. I have been involved with the PGA HOPE program now for about a year. The benefits of Veteran comradery, social interaction and golf instruction has really made a big difference in my life. I was a “normal” Vet who has a solid social foundation yet still have gained a vast amount of stability in my life that I didn’t know I was missing. If you are brand new to golf, a seasoned veteran duffer or somewhere between, this Program can and will help you along life’s journey. As with any program you will get from it what you put into it. If you are only there for the golf instruction, you will get just that, but wind up missing what the whole program is for. PGA HOPE not only teaches golf, but it also provides an environment that gives you the opportunity to get help from or give help to your fellow Veterans. Just being around someone “who gets it” helps a great deal in life.

typical official VA site. Give you information and then never and I mean never will they give you a phone number or web site to find out more information. For example, I went to the ER for my heart. I filled out the VA form for reimbursement as I paid the bill. I called every VA number known to mankind and no one could tell me where to mail the VA form. VA will supply the form but will never tell you where to mail it.
I would try golf but as usual VA site won’t tell you how to sign up. Read the comments. Anyone still alive who found out how to sign up?

If you go to the clickable hyperlink in the article that says “near you”, a map will pop up. Click the “+’ on the bottom left to zoom in if using your fingers on a smart device to zoom doesn’t work. Once you find the closest pinpoint (indicated as a red circle with the golfer logo in the middle) click it – this will open the information in a box to the left of the page with the organization. From there, there should be a link at the bottom of the box directing you to your areas chapter. From there, I was able to view events that I could register for in my area. Hope this helps!

sounds like a great opportunity and disheartening. We have great golfing areas 5 miles from my home yet the closest location would be 2.5 hours away.. maybe some other day we in more rural areas will get assistance that is accommodating for us as well as the city folk
PGA REACH works with PGA Sections, PGA Professionals, and VA hospitals to identify golf courses and communities that are willing to host and would benefit from the program. If the courses in your area aren’t willing to be included then those courses aren’t available to veterans under this program.

Golf! I have spent 20+ years being shamed four hours at a time by this “game”. I never got instructions so that explains my poor performance on the links. I try to get out at least once a year but due to a faulty hip I can’t walk or swing. Is this something I can be taught to work around? What a wonderful program, kudos to all involved. I see there are courses in my immediate area and I may take the leap in hopes a 76 year old can be redeemed. Thanks.

This seems like a great program for the veterans. My question is why don’t we get the program in Lafayette, La? It is a big city and there are a lot of veterans in this area that would like some golf instruction. The courses here are very good and we need it to happen here, instead of having to travel 2 hours or more to get to one of these programs.

Ok the information is limited here, as there is no real directive to or how to submit an application. I am a 100 % disabled vet who was injured during Iraq freedom time frame. I told my wife I was taking up golf this spring as it was alway a passion of mine, even though my physical alments hinder me. I was always able to get away and relax to a point when I played golf, so I look forward regardless of the pain and discomfort. The VA has set this up pretty much like everything else, half assed so I expect nothing else. I would love to be involved with other veterans in my local area to enjoy the game of golf.

PGA HOPE has given me a new spark in my life. A sport I never thought of playing at 70 years of age. The enjoyment, relaxing, stress less game of golf has help my PTSD symptoms immensely subside. The game is medicine for my mind, body and soul. I truly know the therapeutic value of golf has been nothing more than a blessing and healing to my mental state. I can go on and on how much the game has improved the quality of life, my relationships etcétera etcétera. Wow, PGA Hope has given me a new lease in life. Veterans can enjoy life, nature, exercise meet great people and play wonderful game at the same time.

I received the email for this event at 5:41pm today (22 Mar) and it looks like the event took place on the 20th of Mar. I also cannot connect to the Tampa Fl site (Rogers Park) from the website. Is this event ongoing or was it a one time schedule 2 days ago and I am just getting the notice?

I am also a Veteran suffering from PTSD, sleep apnea, and several other physical calamities, but thanks to the lord I have physical mobility. I started golf not too long ago and it has being my best decision ever. I wish there was a program nearby to be able to take advantage of.

I can’t use the location function to figure out which course or courses in my area offer the program. I can see there are some in Hawaii, but when I try to use it more it doesn’t work for some reason. Im on the island of Oahu, so any course would work. I played in high school but haven’t played since I got out of the Marine Corps in 2010. Any information you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks.

My husband too is interested in this PGA Hope program. I clicked on the Near Me and clicked on the Red locations and called the Gold Club which is seen on the left panel along with their address. I am awaiting a call back, left a voice mail. I will make a Tee Time under this program ahead of time to ensure a reservation in the case they have a daily limit. Not much info here to instruct Veteran’s on the steps to take to book a PGA Hope Golf tee-time. So, many sad comments from Veteran’s frustrations attempting without success to join the program. Hope this helps.
I have no physical issues, I just am a terrible golfer who happens to be a Vietnam veteran. Am I eligible for this program?
I have played for a while but haven’t in a while. I retired from the military in 2012. I run a non-profit organization called H.E.A.R.T. where I communicate with Veterans in dealing with PTSD and suicide. I educate them on finding positive ideas to combat the negative results. I would like to find time to do the PGA HOPE program to see if I still have what it takes. I will leave the necessary information. Always wanted to learn how to play. Would be a cool program, as usual it’s not available in my area. If it’s available in your area take advantage if you can.
I would love to take up the game of golf again, and know I would need some help. This sport was a great tool for me in the past, as it helped me to get out and forget my issues. When I was active duty my wife hated me, as I would be on a local course. I am going on 61, and I am apprehensive to get on the course. Your help would be appreciated.

I did this 5 yrs ago at Hill Crest Golf Coarse in Boise ID; I have to say, it was one of the most memorable times golfing I’ve ever had. Of coarse we played best ball with a pro on each team and had a fantastic dinner after-words. Thanks again Hill Crest GC.

the PGA Hope program sounds great….if you live in a metro area. It would take me ~2hrs one way drive time to reach Ft Sam Houston Golf Course from outer Kerr Co. TX. I’m pretty sure that some Pro in the Kerrville, Fredericksburg, Bandera, Bourne TX area might get certified to bring the HOPE program further out.
Kerr County Texas has the highest Veteran population per capita of any county in Texas…as well as VA medical facility.

This program is awesome. It’s held at Goodwin Park GC in Hartford and they’re looking to add a second program down by the shore this year. There’s two sessions a year, the spring and fall. Doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a weekly player. The pros will fix some portion of your game to make it better. Plus at the end of the program you get a brand new set of clubs, bag, and a nice bit of swag. Also Quilts of Honor give all new players a beautiful, personalized hand made quilt. I participated in PGA Hope in the fall of 2022. I absolutely loved it! I’ve played the game most of my life but due to a TBI I had to relearn the game. They got my swing back even better than it was. The instructors are fantastic and very knowledgeable. If you’re a veteran that’s new to the game or a seasoned player, I’d definitely recommend this program. The program takes place every spring and fall. When you finish the course, you even get a brand new set of clubs and a golf bag. To get more information search for PGAHope and the state you live in for more info.
Interested and signed up for the email notification. Heard about this months ago from my social worker Rachel M. at my Local VA clinic at Port Jervis, NY and that it might be held in Milford, PA. So far the closest is West Point. Will keep a watch.

I’ve actually participated in PGA Hope and found it absolutely awesome. I’ve played most of my life but the instructors taught me so much that made my playing and enjoyment of the games so much more. Highly recommend this program to any veteran, wether you’re a life long player or brand new to the game.

I am a name vet and have played golf most of my life. PGA HOPE is the greatest program for anyone, new or returning. Interaction with other vets is always fun but put that with golf and ou la la it’s the best.

Hello: I would love to participate in this program as I’m a 100% Disabled Vietnam COMBAT VETERAN and I now live in Kelseyville, CA, a small town in Lake County, CA which has OVER 8,000 Veterans living here, however, in perusing your map which shows all of the various locations in Northern California I didn’t see one even remotely close to me and, quite frankly, I’m extremely surprised that you don’t even have one in Santa Rosa, CA, the closest big city to me & where there’s a TON of great golf courses like Silverado and numerous other PGA courses so maybe one of the “honchos” in what appears to me to be an EXCELLENT PROGRAM for COMBAT VETERANS like me with PTSD, should look into this glaring oversight on someone’s part and then REMEDY IT ASAP, copy that?

Hi Robert,
I too had the issue of “no clinics close to me”. I had to travel 3 1/2 hours each way to get to the closest one. What I have found is that the “honchos” are few and the need almost limitless. As this program continues to grow I have no doubt that there will be a program somewhere around the Clear Lake area at some point in the future. They need available local PGA instructors willing to take the time out of their schedule to go through the training required and then set up a program in an area. Believe me it is no easy task as I have been over a year getting things rolling up in the Redding area. It takes time and effort on many people’s part to make something like this happen. There are however, clinics just down the road from you in the Vacaville and Walnut Creek areas if you want to venture down there or you are more than welcome to come on up to Redding this Fall since our Spring clinic is now full. If I can get the ears of the “honchos” next week when I see them maybe I can drop a hint and get something moving your way? Anyway, don’t be pissed at them, just be glad we have a program that is truly helpful for all Vets on their road to healing, recovering and recreating and that it is expanding. Yes, it’s slow, but it is expanding. Let me know if I can help and I will do what I can.

Hello,
I had all my lumbers fused with screws and rods for extra measure, When I started to Play golf again it became difficult to T-up and place the ball.
That’s when I started to think of an idea for a better, an easier less painful method.
So it started, a shaft the size of a club, sturdy so a 250# person can’t break it, able to stick any tee into the ground, at the desired depth, place a ball on the tee, plumb level, set the T-stick off to the side, and drive the ball..
My personal brain storming sessions have created some designs, but I’m not a golf pro which most likely will lead to enhancements.
My idea became more justified when I watched fellow vets playing golf. The difficulty with a prosthetic leg at the knee or an entire leg, the difficulty with both legs amputated. Expand the size of a group of golfers playing or have quit because of all the different orthopedic short or long term Ailments, knees, hips, backs, shoulders, neck and so on. Expand that group further with all the neurological short or permanent ailments who find T-up and ball placement difficult or they have even quit. Expand these groups to worldwide population..
I’m a 74 year old Vietnam vet, I started playing after I retired, I want to play as long as I can. In my small group of friends there was one golfer who quit for not being able to T-up.
I think My idea can help all of these people.
Just an old vet working his idea that can help people get out there and play more golf easier and perhaps better.

John , sounds like you’re on to something. I also have had 2 back surgeries with my entire lumbar fused. I like to play golf but even after surgery suffer from chronic pain and playing golf only intensifies it. Good luck with the contraption you’re working on. I think my wife, who is also a vet and has chronic back issues will get involved in the PGA Hope program. Sounds like a winner.
