“How do I prove that I’m a Veteran?” It’s a question often asked by those who once served in the military. Many businesses offer discounts to Veterans for restaurants, hotels, stores, recreational activities and even home improvement, among other perks. Former service members will want to take advantage of those opportunities.
First, you’ll want to apply for VA’s Veteran ID Card (VIC), which is a digital photo ID you can use to get those discounts. Since September 2022, all new Veteran ID cards have been digital. A Veteran with a physical ID card can continue using it to get discounts. The VIC is separate from the VA health care ID, which a Veteran receives when enrolling in VA health care.
If you have any questions or need help, email VA’s VIC program at vetidcard@va.gov.
Click here to apply online and login using your existing Login.gov, ID.me, DS Logon or MyHealtheVet account. A Veteran without any of these accounts can create a free Login.gov or ID.me account. If you are unable to submit your VIC application through VA.gov, please use Access VA.
When applying, make sure to have your social security number; a digital copy of your DD214, DD256, DD257 or NGB22 that you can upload; and a copy of a current and valid government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, passport or state-issued identification card.
You’ll also need a digital color photo of yourself from the shoulders up. The photo should follow all of these standards:
- Show a full, front view of your face and neck with no hat, head covering or headphones covering or casting shadows on your hairline or face.
- Be cropped from your shoulders up much like a passport photo.
- Show you with your eyes open and in a neutral expression.
- Be taken in clothing you’d wear for a driver’s license photo.
- Be a square size and have a white or plain-color background with no scenery or other people in the photo.
- Show what you look like now, meaning a photo that is no older than 10 years old; it should be uploaded as a .jpeg, .png, .bmp or .tiff file.
A Veteran must meet certain criteria to be eligible for a VIC, including both of these requirements:
- Service on active duty, in the Reserve or in the National Guard, including the Coast Guard.
- Receipt of an honorable or general discharge under honorable conditions.
If the Veteran received an other-than honorable, bad conduct or dishonorable character of discharge, that person is not eligible for a Veteran ID card. If a Veteran has an uncharacterized or unknown discharge status, VA must verify that person’s eligibility before approving an application. The Veteran must provide a copy of his/her discharge papers when applying for a VIC to prove their character of discharge.
After a Veteran applies for a VIC, VA will check that person’s eligibility and verify that the character of discharge meets eligibility requirements, the ID submitted is valid and the image chosen to appear on the card meets photo requirements.
VA will then send an email letting the Veteran know the status of the application. If the Veteran has an unknown or uncharacterized discharge status, the application will take more time to process. VA may need to request your records from the National Personnel Records Center, part of the National Archives and Records Administration.
If a Veteran receives an email from VA asking for additional information or evidence to process the application, that person must sign in to AccessVA and update the application.
VA will send an email with the digital card attached if a Veteran is eligible for a Veteran ID Card.

The only thing you can do is call your member of Congress. If anyone lives in Florida the Congressman who originally sponsored the bill was Vern Buchanan. I encourage everyone to call. They will apparently have to amend the law to say “Printed” or “Hard Copy” or “Something you can physically hold or touch that you can put in your wallet”. Because the VA just won’t print the physical card. Why doesn’t the VA just create and alternate template in their software that they use to generate VHICs. They could easily switch between printing a VHIC(Veteran Health Identification Card) or a VIC(Veteran Identification Card). Maybe I should have served in the Canadian Armed Forces. They know how to print a professional physical id card for all their veterans. I don’t know if this is BS or not, but I’m already in the VA system, and this POS will not accept my state DL. I am done screwing with it. I will just ask if businesses offer a veteran discount (Lowes, Ace Hardware, for examples), and if they do they do I can verify it with my VA ID Card or my DD214. If this is some kind of scam thing the VA needs to get it off their site.
I also have been nixed by ID.me hence, I can’t prove to anyone via the computer that I am a Vet. Retired Vet no less.
I have all but given up on many of my perks, its just to freaking hard to do if you are not computer literate.
Does anyone know if a VSO officer will help us to apply for the card if we don’t have the digital know how? (by appt, of course) I had a complete legal name change and my name is now different than my DD2-14 I’m in the VA system under my new legal name since 1987. Some gov digital forms don’t allow for additional info for my name change court papers ??
I have tried for several hours to move forward with this! After finally getting “accepted” into the system, it repeatedly wouldn’t accept my photos of a state issued ID no matter what I did! I tried to get the code to go in person and that failed! Initially I was told on the phone at Ft Rosecrans park entry to just bring my DD214 and photo ID to get this park card. When I drove there, I was told , NO – you need to get the Government issued ID card first – but I cannot move forward with this!!! Useless system!
After reading what is needed I realize why I will delete the message and forget any application. I worked earlier today trying to get on these gov systems and gave-up. A 15 character password that wouldn’t work and this was after having saved the previous password. It’s as if it is as difficult as possible to discourage the use of these systems.

I am not aware the spouse can get an ID. Consider going into the VA ID office to check it out, just in case. Otherwise, take his card with you.

Can my spouse get a card?
I can’t get a VIC because ID.ME refuses to verify me. They somehow have an address for me that I’ve never lived at and instead of thinking this is a case of identity fraud or a mistake, they think I’m a criminal trying to pull a fast one. Because I can’t verify and address that I’ve never lived at, they are denying me services that I earned. I’ve been going round and round with these clowns for about 5 years now. I’ve spoken to the VA about this and that fell on deaf ears (that was how I found out about the fake address). They told me to deal with ID.ME. I’ve written to Sen. Ted Cruz with no response. I do not know what else to do to get this fixed. I’ve very frustrated.
Please contact your congressman in your district as well as the DAV. Perhaps they can help you. I suggest you find another way to show them your previous addresses: Do a people search of yourself online, go to the DMV for previous addresses, or if you have old mail, contact social security…this is just thoughts of what I would do if I were experiencing this.
By the way, go to the patient advocate office at the VA.

VA.gov site has expired license according to both Mozilla and Safari. Couldn’t access that way. this is like so much of VA … outdated and unhelpful.

My VA card for healthcare has been denied at places like Lowe’s. I have to carry a copy of DD-14 also.
Lowes changes their policy as the military does with this and that. You’ll need to register as a Vet at lowes.com. scroll down on the bottom of their website and hope for the best that it’s self explanatory. On the upside if they are hiring you can stack your military and employee discount on 3 major holidays pending the fine lining. Hope this help some.
Lowes and Home Depot have to verify online through your account and through ID Me. I just did that and make sure your account says enrolled in the military discount.

Lowe’s clerks have made mistakes with me, too. Call for a mgr. They may give you the discount and then check later with a regional office to verify what you said. Either way, win-win.

I do not carry a smart phone thus digital id card is of no use to me. I would prefer a hard plastic or cardboard. I heading toward 80 years old and I’m sure that many more Vets like me do not have a smart phone. Please respond to me a alternative for me.

I have had my Vet ID card since I first heard of them When you follow the above instructions and after you are approved you will receive a hard plastic card to carry in your wallet. I had mine laminated at o9ffice max because they aren’t as stiff as a drivers’ license. Hope this helps.

I don’t relish the idea of having to carry yet another ID card around in my wallet. I already have a “VA health care ID”, which should be adequate for the purposes of proving that I’m a veteran, but now the VA says is not so. Having to go through a tedious application for yet another card and having to do it online is repulsive to me. I do NOT consider the internet to be a secure venue for the transmission of sensitive date LIKE MY SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER and personal military documents. This process would be increasing the chances of my becoming a victim of identity theft. I’ve been active with computing since the ’70s, and I know exactly what kind of risks are involved. Nothing you say can convince me that I’m incorrect in my caution.
Besides, the federal government assured the public when the Social Security program began that SSNs would NEVER be used as a general purpose ID number, would only be used for the purposes of administering the Social Security program. Instead, now here we are! In the autumn of 1970, the military switched to using the SSN instead of a military ID while I was in boot camp. I can still remember how the older guys in my company (who understood the implications of this change) were outraged about the move. And now, banks and insurance companies force the general public to provide this critical and sensitive piece of personal information as part of the cost of doing business with them. The other day a bank teller who was new to his job wanted me to provide the last four of my SSN to prove who I was. I loudly refused to do so and cited the reasons I was doing so. Another teller who knew me told him that I was OK and he relented, but he was resentful of my refusal.
If you guys don’t have a way to apply for this new card offline, then I will have to pass on getting it. Besides, I’m (I removed this portion of my email) and jealously possessive of the time I have left to my life. The VA frequently is demanding that I squander it on things like surveys and things like this. It’s getting more and more likely that I’m simply going to refuse to waste my time like such requests and applications.

If you have a DD 214, stating “honorable discharge,” you are a Veteran. The person that gave you that information had no idea what they were talking about. I am a Rating Veteran Service Representative for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Here’s the Manual Reference that validates your status.
MR-21, III.i.1.A.1.a. Definition: Veteran-” A Veteran is a person who
served in the active military, naval, air, or space service, and
was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable.”
and 38 CFR 3.1(d)
Veteran means a person who served in the active military, naval, air, or space service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable.
(1) For compensation and dependency and indemnity compensation the term veteran includes a person who died in active service and whose death was not due to willful misconduct.
(2) For death pension the term veteran includes a person who died in active service under conditions which preclude payment of service-connected death benefits, provided such person had completed at least 2 years honorable military, naval, air, or space service, as certified by the Secretary concerned. (See §§ 3.3(b)(3)(i) and 3.3(b)(4)(i))

Why Can I just give you a copy of my DVA medical ID.?It states Service-connected disability. That should be all you need to verify.

Most of us already have a card, and mine says it expires 08/21/2024 so will you send me a new one when it does ?I have no way of providing any digital copies.
My original DD214 had an incorrect induction year date, s/b 67 but they typed 69, so they issued me a DD215 and instead of correcting that
they corrected the induction date to my terminating date! I gave up trying to fix it but rec’d my 20% disability and thankful for the healthcare from the VA
My induction date is 17 AUG 67, and my termination date is 29 AUG 69

BTW, an internet article from the mainstream press says the VA system has the best record on preventing (therefore curing) MRSA and the other antibiotic-resistant bugs.
i was turned down by VA 4 years ago because although i have my DD214 showing honorable discharge, they said i was a retired federal employee and therefore did not qualify for VA benefits. have things changed since then? it didn’t make sense then and it still doesn’t

I am just another Veteran trying to help. I don’t think the VA could ever turn you down because you are a retired federal employee. They look at several things: current income, service connection, etc. I would suggest going to the nearest Veteran Service Office (VSO) in your area and providing them with your DD214. Tell them you want to know entitlements; medical care, education benefits, etc. Do you suffer from a reoccurring pain from an injury or accident on active duty? Have you ever enrolled in the VA following active-duty service? All honorably discharged Veterans are entitled to at least burial benefits including a free burial plot for you and your spouse, military honors. Try again, Carla
So please don’t get this confused with a VHIC (Veterans Health Identification Card). VIC (Veteran Identification Card) is for Veterans that are not eligible for healthcare. I work for the VA (healthcare side) and do VHIC for veterans. The VIC does nothing at all 90% of places look at it and have no idea what this card is, its a joke. The VHIC along with a SC (Service Connected Disability %) will get you those discounts and also Base access along with Commissary/PX access. They made the VIC digital only because they know it doesn’t hold any weight anywhere and they have been wasting money by mailing this ID cards out. So please don’t waste your time applying for a VIC. Go to your nearest VA clinic and make sure your enrolled for healthcare. P.S. even if you don’t have a SC% you can still get a VHIC, you just won’t have base access and those perks.
[Editor: The VIC is for anyone who wants one and is eligible. It’s not either/or with the VHIC. Veterans and Veterans groups told Congress that they wanted an ID to verify their status as a Veteran. Yes, all 50 state DMVs already do this. Congress passed the law, and VA administers this service based on federal law. Simple as that.]

Hello Thomas, Larry here. I lost my original medical ID and when I was at my local clinic they were able to photograph me with a webcam/digital cam attached to their OS and voila, in about 2 weeks I had a replacement. Hope this helps…Larry

Do windows of veteran who receives VA pension qualify?
Why is the most prominent thing on the veteran’s ID card a giant “Choose VA” logo, when the only group that needs this particular card is the very group who cannot choose VA? Everyone who can actually choose VA will already have either a retired military ID or a VA healthcare ID. And no one who is shown this card knows what “Choose VA” is. This card needs to be redesigned to focus on the veteran status or branch of service, not an obscure VA marketing program.
Login through MyHealtheVet or Login.gov also again asked for ID.me additional verified login. So, I say just allow or set for any one login to establish access VA.
Do you have a card for a spouse?
Are any programs available for widows, especially those who have been caregivers for their spouse w/dementia/Alzheimer’s?

You have my deepest sympathy!! I suggest you contact the Veteran Service Office (VSO) in your area. Check out their number in your phone book. You may want to contact VA social worker assigned to Geriatrics in your area. . Just contact the main number and asked for him or her. I know you don’t know their name, but the VA operator should have a list of employees. Once you are connected, ask them. Often times it is on a case-by-case basis. The situations vary depending on if your husband was service-connected or not, receiving compensation. There are some widows that could receive their own support for nursing home etc. Remember it is a case-by-case basis. You can apply for partial burial reimbursement as well.

Can I go on base with the VIC?
This is WRONG. This scam of a card needs to get a Federal Look as an easy lead-up to all sorts of scams targeting veterans; this very card may be a scam in itself. What is this sort of attempt to defraud vets doing on the actual VA Website? If this sort of proof of service important to anyone, for various legitimate purposes (we all understand that), then we already have all sorts of acceptable, legitimate, and convenient means of accomplishing this… have your Veteran status acknowledged on your driver’s license, or the VA, itself, will issue you a VA picture ID. For online access to anything veteran related that is legit, Login.gov, ID.me, DS Logon or a MyHealtheVet account will provide that access, or you should walk away, and consider yourself lucky for not going any further with the probable scam that you were pursuing. This would be (I say again would be) a great idea, and I’d love to have one if it weren’t for the thousands (or is it 100’s of thousands) of crooks, scoundrels, shisters, and conmen lurking all over the internet just waiting for something like this sort of card to duplicate, imitate,6 and sell to anyone who wants one… and there won’t be any shortage of buyers. That sort of illegitimacy can grow and delegitimize all the other legit proof that is already acceptable.
Please! This card is trying to fix something that isn’t broken; yet. It could be the over-reach that finally breaks everything that we have struggled so long to simplify and fix.
In order to get this type of ID Card, you must already have an ID (such as drivers license, state issued ID, or VA Health Card). All of those IDs that you need to get this ID can already identify a vet as a vet… legitimately, and everyone trusts all of those sources of ID. This new thing is a prime candidate for all sorts of fraud. Enough already; please nip this thing in the bud and get rid of it.

My husband was a Viet Nam vet. Passed away 2019 of heart disease and Leukemia. We were married for 54 years. I was with him every step of the way. Do I qualify for a card. It’s veterans day and you pull this paper printed “ID card” out to try to get a discount at the local sports clips just for them to look at you funny then ask for the full price.
It’s just an image file and they expect you to print it on paper. It may as well say “McLovin” on the card too for what is offered here. Absolutely pointless.

It’s always amusing that the VA puts the Coast Guard in a different context than the other services. When listing people that could apply for their VA ID you didn’t say the Marine Corps or the Navy but you singled out the Coast Guard the Coast Guard is and always has been a military organization That has fought in every single war. This country is ever been involved in. We are worldwide and not just me, but a lot of people in the Coast Guard are tired of not being acknowledged as such.

If you are 100 percent disabled vet go to your nearest deers office with VA letter showing your 100 percent, dd214, and two forms of unexpired ID. You can find this unfortunate deers websites.

My driver’s license has a veteran designation on the front of it. I use it all the time for discounts. You don’t absolutely need this VA ID card for that, but it’s a nice to have.
In most cases, yes. I have not encountered a scenario where that did not work, not to say they don’t exist.

why isn’t the va card good enourh as a real id card ???? last time DNV gave me a state id the girl said the VA card is as good as it gets and that she did not know why it wasn’t being used as real TD. ?????
What if the veteran is older and doesn’t have a device to display the digital Veteran Identification Card? Does that mean the VA is in violation of the Veterans Identification Card Act because they won’t provide a physical card anymore? Why does the VA have the hardware and software to produce Veterans Health Identification cards (VHIC) but can’t use the same equipment to produce a Veterans Identification Card (VIC)? Doesn’t the Veterans Identification Card Act provide a provision for the requesting Veteran to pay for the physical VIC if the Veterans Administration is unwilling to allocate any of its budget for producing a less than 50 cent printed PVC card. In the organization I work for we produce 5000 printed HID cards for access control and identification of employees every year for a cost of 37 cents per employee. In both Canada and the United Kingdom they are able to print a physical card for their Veterans.
You do receive a physical card. You get a digital copy in your email until your physical card arrives.
No you don’t. The VA pulled a fast one and decided to skirt the Veteran Identification Card Act. The law said they have to produce a VIC. They printed them for a while through the corporate sponsor Office Depot but that agreement ended. So they decided to just go digital because they aren’t intelligent enough to troubleshoot their problem of printing the cards themselves.
Note: As of September 2022, all new Veteran ID Cards are digital. If you already have a physical Veteran ID Card, you can continue using it to get discounts.
