Edgar York was born in Davenport, Iowa, to Robert and Vera York on Nov. 8, 1919. After high school, in 1941, he registered for the draft and was sworn into service with the Coast Guard on Nov. 27, 1942. He then entered the Navy on January 24, 1943.
During his naval service, York served on the destroyer USS Edison (DD-439) and was stationed in Puerto Rico. After the war and his subsequent discharge, York worked at the Hoover Company and then at the Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company. He retired in the 1960’s and married Evelyn Scherer on August 24, 1967. From this marriage, he gained three stepchildren: Richard, Carol, and Barbara.
Edgar York passed away on March 11, 2007, and is interred in Section 5, Site 722 at Rock Island National Cemetery. Honor his service at his Veterans Legacy Memorial page.
