Since its inception in 2014, the National Community Partnership Challenge (CPC) has recognized more than 600 exceptional partnerships that enhance the health and well-being of Veterans and their communities. The CPC is facilitated by VA’s National Center for Healthcare Advancement and Partnerships (HAP) on behalf of the Office of the Under Secretary for Health.

Each year, a panel of judges reviews the CPC submissions, evaluating their alignment to provide diverse and inclusive services to Veterans. The CPC serves as a platform for celebration and a testament to the organizations and individuals committed to enhancing the well-being of Veterans and their families.

The theme for the 2023 CPC is “Accelerating VHA’s Journey to High Reliability Through Partnerships.”

This initiative prioritizes patient safety, creates a culture of continuous improvement and utilizes proactive strategies to prevent errors and adverse events. Winning entries must align with the principles of a High Reliability Organization and showcase the way VA serves Veterans of all races, ethnicities, sexual identities, languages, cultures and spiritual preferences.

The submission period ran from January to March, and 42 organizations submitted applications that met the required judging criteria while posing innovative solutions to improve the quality of life for Veterans and their families. VA employees at medical facilities, health care centers, community-based outpatient centers, clinics and program offices were eligible to submit an entry.

The judging process meticulously evaluates each partnership’s impact on Veterans and their communities, emphasizing scalability and sustainability. A panel of 10 judges from program offices, field representation and VA, reviews each application and selects the top 10 submissions. Dr. Mark T. Upton is the chief judge.

“Partnerships making a difference in the lives of Veterans and their families”

During the initial review, the panel thoroughly examines every submission and identifies the top 10 submissions that exhibit exceptional promise. The panel identifies three winners and two alternates. The three winners undergo a thorough vetting process and further evaluation by the OGC Special Advisor to ensure there are no legal/moral or financial risks to Veterans or VA.

“We’re encouraged by all the partnerships that are truly making a difference in the lives of Veterans and their families,” said Georgeanna Bady, HAP health system specialist. “These innovative approaches are helping to spread best practices across the health care system.”

“HAP would like to congratulate every CPC winner as they expand their partnerships in supporting the needs of our Veterans,” said Chien Chen, chief HAP officer/nurse executive. “We hope to inspire more innovative partnerships by highlighting these important success stories. We encourage organizations to continue sharing their unique partnership journeys at future CPC events.”

The winners will be honored with the coveted Crystal Award during a virtual award ceremony. In recognition of their achievement, each winning facility and its community partner will also receive a commendation from the VA Secretary. HAP will feature the winners’ stories to share partnership ideas and highlight how these collaborations have positively impacted the lives of Veterans and their families.

    More horse dung. I don’t go to VA cuz I’m not willing to Sit in a line as long as the eye can see to prove my disabilities or get the rating increased. In fact, I’m not sure the VA does much of anything more so then deny, deny, deny. 1st button they installed on their desks is a deny button just to make their process easier. well, thank goodness for that. We wouldn’t want your day to be difficult in any way. But please just keep creating bs commitees that result in useless info I can’t even find so that you may justify your existence. My 2 cents.

    In ’06 I was flat lined (sudden cardiac death) at the Phoenix VA hospital during what was described as a minimal risk. Minimally invasive heart catheter procedure. I was gone long enough to suffer both heart and neurological damage. I didn’t know what had happened, only that I had blacked out. They said nothing. When l found that l could no longer work I applied to social security for help. The doctor upon reading my medical records told me that I had suffered a MASSIVE HEART ATTACK and immediately assigned me as permanently disabled. It took 15 years for the VA to agree with him!

      Great comment I agree with you. Regional Managers is micromanaging hospitals. Special programs that need approval could take long time of wait for a simple signature, therefore delaying needed programs or for construction of special facilities.

    I’ve submitted numerous requests to the director at a VA facility to respectful request the transfer of my medical care to another VA facility, and to this day after over 2years of trying the VA director has never! Responded to any of my request.

    I don’t think so period. Veterans are being mistreated, misdiagnosis and label wrong. Still drugging up, Still draining the bottle Still dying…so what improvements? Civilians way still isn’t working right. WE NEED A CHANGE FOR THE BETTET.

    If they want to help, partner with subsidiary lodging, and 2 way free transportation to the hospital or clinics. That would help.

    If we had a liason or someone that could get in the community and assist with Community Care (Mission Act) or to have a better report’ with the outside providers that we use at the VA and someone to better explain to The Veterans and the providers how and what the difference is between for profit and not for profit. It would be beneficial if we could get hospitalist contracted from the VA to the local hospitals to see our Veterans for the sake of continuity as well as, to be able to have a contact both for the Community and the Veterans.

    What a waist of time and money!
    You make partnerships and give awards to to people that need for nothing. In the mean time us disabled veterans cannot even get medical care. They make it look good on paper, but the truth is we have to fight for everything and wait months to be pacified and scheduled an appointment months away. They may keep and may not, but either way we still can’t get a diagnosis or even a plan to fix us. It is all about the bonus, or awards to the administration. Not a benefit to the veterans that truly need it.

      I agree %1000. I live in pain every day, as most of us do, but I continue to be denied my benefits because i don’t want to end up addicted to painkillers, or some other secondary effect that prescription meds DO have on people. We should NOT have to fight to get the PROPER care we deserve, Nor no way in heck should I ever make an ortho appt in July, get scheduled for August. Aug comes, and the damn clinic cancels. This has happened to me multiple times. I had to make a appointment with a civilian ortho. I can’t with the inconsistencies/inconveniences

    Why does a disabled veteran have to prove his mobility status !Just because his pride won’t confined him to a wheelchair doesn’t mean his
    Chronic illness allow him to perform as a normal Veteran Beauty older movie walk set eat sleep! If a person in this condition is hard to maintain and survive in this world then he should be recognized and be able to have a caregiver and not turn down for that reason! All documentations that are served in the VA health board should be reviewed and re-saw the love has a disability to maintain a normal life !

      Totally agree. I was recommended for the maid service, however, because during my last hospitalization I was able to take care of myself based on nurses notes, it was denied. I am 70 years old. Have heart failure, lung problems and 100% for mental, fibromyalgia. I live by myself, to cook is a problem, I have burned food, put a pot on stove and burned, I did not put any food to cook was very tired and went to sleep. Alarm went off and woke me up. I can clean as I get very tired and even my bathroom is hard to clean. The service will provide a person for 3 days a week for 4 hours. I get panic attacks as well as anxiety. At my age it is totally ridiculous to deny this service.

      I am a Veteran who has been trying to claim my disabilities and have been continue to be denied since 2004? I gave 35 years of service and I am wondering when does aggravating and made worsted due to deployments in Iraq kick in? I know many of Soldiers at 80-100 percent and never left the states? I am in pain and all I get is more pain meds not fixing the problem and I had surgery to my neck C3-C7 repairs and still at 0 percent? Who is the VA really helping not the Veterans for sure.

    I’ve never been allowed to know the status of my health or see my ct, mri, or X-ray EVER. OF COURSE they never even looked at my military injuries either. In fact I had to leave the military to get health care treatment because they refused to treat my military injuries. I was a army hero saved nearly 100 lives. Blown up twice but every brach of service at some point saw me running to safety with a soldier on my back and sometimes I was on fire.

      I choose VA and recognize my responsibility to learn about, and utilize, VA’s enhancements for my healthcare. I develope a relationship with my providers, use secure messaging before my appointments to list questions or concerns. Use Blue Button Reports to read Doctor’s notes after every appointment, test or image. I follow instructions from my medication mailers and use MyHealthEVet to reorder prescriptions as soon as they are received. If not in person, I use secure messaging to communicate concerns to Patient Advocate Liaisons (PAL) in my clinics and Patient Advocates or the hospital Veteran Experience Officer. I have also communicated with the Hospital Director. If I do not receive satisfactory results I have contacted the White House VA Hotline and the VA Inspector General. I have received care at VA since 1993 and am alive because of the coordinated care received. If I encounter a problem, I work, within the system, to ensure it is resolved. The web pages, Facebook pages and weekly emails ensure I am aware of new programs and where I can receive help on navigating things like Community Care, Beneficial Travel Self Service System, 72 Hour Notification, Telenurse, and VA Video Connect. I also volunteer to serve on my VA’s Patient Advisory Board and volunteer with service agencies to educate other veterans. When we encounter any problem we should accept the challenge to take part in finding a solution. VA Healthcare is our most important earned benefit and is ours to improve.

        Halalulah sir. I two learned two negotiate the VA system the hard way on my own. Er-Um being a disabled veteran from an unincorporated American territory I was treated as a brown skin step child by the VA. Thru constant trial and error I made changes to my attitude towards the VA whom owns the territory. I try to work with in the system two help me. The system four care out here changes daily. Primary care mental care staffing peoples community providers . You can see the pattern. The too most impotent concerns veterans of this island are monetary benifits and free healthcare I am tired and sick of the evaluate then medicate system four care. I think about being #23 on a daily basis. As I read the previous comments I see I not am not the only won with VA issues. I can realate. Thanks four sharing.
