Leaving the military and adapting to civilian life comes with more than its fair share of challenges. And one of the biggest challenges for Veterans is personal finances. A recent study from Blue Star Families reports that 82% of working-age Veterans say they stress about money.

Between rising costs of living and the weight of credit cards and other debt, many Veterans are living paycheck to paycheck.

Ramsey Solutions, founded by personal finance expert Dave Ramsey, wants to help. In honor of Veterans Day, they want to serve 10,000 Veterans by offering them Financial Peace University (FPU) for free.

What is Financial Peace University?

FPU is a nine-week class that Dave Ramsey created after his own story of going broke and fighting back from bankruptcy.

It teaches how to budget, pay off debt and invest wisely through easy-to-understand video lessons. Veterans will go through the class with a supportive group of people where they can talk openly about money. And together, they’ll discuss the lessons and encourage each other as they make progress toward their goals.

With FPU, Veterans also get tools and resources to help them manage their money. One of those tools is EveryDollar, a budgeting app designed to work alongside FPU. Veterans also get a year of unlimited group calls with Ramsey-trained financial coaches—plus, a free one-on-one session.

For over 30 years, Financial Peace University has helped millions of people—including thousands of Veterans—become debt-free and build wealth.

FPU’s impact on Veterans—Valarie’s story

Valarie Tomme is one of those Veterans. After leaving the Air Force, she was “working to live.” She was broke, with $125,000 in debt hanging over her—but no one knew how bad things were.

“I thought I was so strong, and I could do this all on my own. And I was too ashamed and embarrassed and prideful to think I was doing something wrong,” she said.

But then a friend convinced her and her husband to take FPU. The class not only made their marriage stronger, but it also got them excited to become debt-free. After nearly three years, that dream became a reality as they paid off a combined $205,000!

Now, Tomme hopes other Veterans follow in her footsteps.

“I would say to anybody to put your shame aside. Once you pay off that first small debt, there’s life. There’s a breath of fresh air. You have a little hope,” she added.

How Veterans can get FPU for free

Veterans can sign up by going to ramseysolutions.com/veterans, where they’ll create an account and fill out a simple form. Ramsey Solutions is offering FPU free for up to 10,000 Veterans, now through Monday, Nov. 13.

David Ramsey is a religious fundamentalist asshole whose solution to debt is to never spend a single penny on anything you enjoy (like TV or ice cream). This isn’t a financial genius and it doesn’t take 9 weeks to say “don’t ever spend money on yourself unless it’s to literally save your life”. This guy’s real solution to getting out of debt is yelling at poor people until they give him their money.

I am still working full time. So I’m not sure how I can take a 9-week class; but I would welcome advice on developing financial well-being. How can this work for me?

I am a fan of Dave Ramsey, and he has helped a lot of people. Dave gives wise advice and you should always listen to what he says. I would be interested in enrolling in Dave’s class. Veterans take pride in learning.

Hello, I have been struggling for years to get my wife’s student loans paid off and to get on a solid budget that both her and I could agree upon to follow. I have read about Dave Ramsey amd his strategy and would love to take advantage of this opportunity.

      • Conner November 9, 2023 at 08:03

I echo the same as Ruben Ruiz. My and I budget struggle due to student loans and card debt. Is it to late to sign up to day?
