Eligible Veterans can shop at Defense commissaries
Many of the traditions and memories we hold dear from the holidays of years past are based on decorating the home, cooking in the kitchen and gathering around the table. Settling into the season doesn’t mean settling for less—it means making the most of all that the holiday season has to offer.
Your Commissary is here to help you prepare with a cornucopia of recipes and special savings on the ingredients you need to make delectable holiday feasts and heartwarming memories. We want to help you save time and money, making it easier for you to focus on celebrating what matters most.
Presenting savings for the season
During November and December, the Defense Commissary Agency is collaborating with its industry partners so you can come home to holiday savings on products that could help make your season merry and bright! We encourage you to check our sales flyer and with Your Commissary locally to learn more about the details and effective dates of these promotions where you shop.
For example, a turkey is traditionally the centerpiece of Thanksgiving dinner and other holiday meals, so it’s important to get the best quality turkey at the best price. That’s why Your Commissary is offering select frozen turkeys from Shady Brook Farms®, Honeysuckle White® and Valchris Farms® for 69¢ per pound through Dec. 31, while supplies last (Please note: This promotion is limited to two turkeys per customer.).
You may be able to extend your holiday savings even further by using manufacturer coupons or purchasing products offered through the “Your Everyday Savings!” (YES!) program. Check our website’s Savings Center to learn more about ways you can save as you plan your shopping.
Your Commissary makes meal prep magical
Sit down and take a break. While you’re working hard on the rest of the meal, let us lend a helping hand so you can serve some delicious appetizers.
You can order meat and cheese platters or baked goods in-store through Your Commissary’s Deli/Bakery manager or find prepackaged options online with Commissary CLICK2GO. Fresh fruit and vegetable trays are also available for order by calling Your Commissary’s Produce Department, contacting the department manager in-store or shopping online with CLICK2GO.
Special orders for special occasions
It’s often possible for commissaries to fulfill special orders for customers for products that they may not regularly carry, but please be aware that doing so may require you to order that product by the case. Depending on local availability, you may be able to place special orders in the following departments: Grocery, Deli/Bakery, Sushi, Meat & Seafood, Produce or Specialty Shops.
You can fill out the Special Order form to get started, but plan ahead to allow plenty of time for product arrival. Please check with your store before ordering to ask about specific product availability, especially at overseas locations, where some restrictions may apply.
Give the gift of groceries
One of the things that makes giving the gift of groceries so special is that anyone is allowed to buy a commissary gift card as a gift, but only authorized customers may use them, so it’s a gift that is exclusive to the military community. Plus, you’re helping others in the military community create holiday memories they will never forget.
The cards sold online are offered in $25 and $50 denominations, while those sold in stores are “open value,” meaning that you can choose to load as little as $5 to as much as $300 on the card.

I would like to know who is eligible to use the commissary? I am a army veteran and I would like to know if I’m eligible and if so what do I need to know to use it

Unfortunately, no one at DeCA can directly answer whether or not you qualify for commissary privileges, because we do not have the authority to confer commissary privileges to anyone, or to change any of the laws or regulations governing commissary access. DoD Instruction (DoDI) 1330.17 lists the individuals, organizations and activities entitled to unlimited commissary privileges, except when prohibited by treaty or other international agreements in foreign countries.
If you believe that you may be entitled to commissary privileges based on criteria listed in DoDI 1330.17, then we recommend that you visit your local installation Pass and ID office for information about military benefits and to obtain an ID card consistent with your entitlements.
In addition, veterans with a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)-documented service-connected disability rating and some other individuals became eligible for commissary shopping privileges beginning January 1, 2020 under the Purple Heart and Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act of 2018. You need more commissary’s around Michigan not just one or two,like in the lower part of our state. It would be real nice

Thank you for taking the time to read this blog post and comment. Unfortunately, we cannot directly address your suggestion to add more commissaries in Michigan, since DeCA does not have the authority to establish commissaries.
Department of Defense Instruction 1330.17 identifies the responsible parties and spells out the responsibilities for commissary operations, to include requesting new construction, funding and minimal patronage criteria. Under its provisions, the secretaries of the military departments shall submit requests to establish commissaries; data is then reviewed and evaluated to ensure the proposed site complies with DoD requirements.
Ultimately, the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower and Reserve Affairs makes the final decision as to whether or not a new commissary will be approved. Funding must then be appropriated by Congress and programmed by the appropriate military department before a new store can be built.
Pursuant to section 2482(a), Title 10, U.S. Code, the needs of active duty Service members and their dependents will be the primary consideration in such assessments. I hope this provides more insight into what goes into commissary establishment decisions. Thank you for your interest in the commissary benefit!
