How to get help right away
Any Veteran in acute suicidal crisis can go to any VA or non-VA health care facility for emergency health care at no cost.
This includes inpatient or crisis residential care for up to 30 days and outpatient care for up to 90 days.
You don’t need to be enrolled in VA health care to get care.

If you’re already using VA medical services, ask your primary care provider to help you make an appointment with a VA mental health provider.
If you’re not already using VA medical services, contact your nearest VA medical center or Vet Center to talk about your needs.

How to get virtual mental health care
VA offers Veterans several ways to connect with mental health professionals virtually, outside of a traditional office visit.
With VA Video Connect, VA’s secure videoconferencing app, you can connect with your VA mental health provider for your scheduled TeleMental Health video visit. Telehealth services are available whether you’re at home or traveling. All you need is a smartphone, tablet, laptop or other internet-connected device.
When you have a question about your mental or physical health, you can connect with a VA staff member through the VA Health Chat app.
VA apps offer a range of services for specific mental health conditions. You can use these apps to complement traditional therapy or track and manage certain conditions independently. For example, the PTSD Coach app is designed for Veterans experiencing symptoms associated with PTSD. The Mindfulness Coach app enables Veterans to practice mindfulness techniques and offers independent or guided lessons.
Access the Veterans Crisis Line 24/7
The Veterans Crisis Line is a free, confidential service that supports Veterans and their family and friends. It can support Veterans experiencing mental health crises and connect users with resources. Respondents are trained professionals who are qualified to support Veteran issues.
To access this service, call 988 and then press 1. You can also chat online or text 838255.
