VA wants to make it easy for you to receive care, and to help you travel to and from your appointments. VA offers many options for quality health care tailored for Veterans, from VA medical centers and community-based outpatient clinics to virtual care and telehealth appointments.

If you do need a face-to-face appointment, you may incur a cost to travel to see a provider. Did you know you may be eligible for reimbursement of some or all of those travel expenses?

VA’s travel reimbursement program can help.

“Our mission is to ensure timely access to world class health care regardless of your location or the way you choose to get care—in-person, over the phone or video appointments, at VA or in the community,” said Hillary Peabody, acting assistant under secretary of Health for Integrated Veteran Care. “Travel reimbursements can make a real difference when it puts money back in the wallets of Veterans and their beneficiaries. We know the challenges of getting to an appointment. The cost to get there shouldn’t be one of them.”

Who is eligible?

Veterans who travel for care at a VA health facility or for VA-approved care at a non-VA health facility in their community and who also meet one of the following:

  • You have a VA disability rating of 30% or higher.
  • You’re traveling for treatment of a service-connected condition even if your VA disability rating is less than 30%.
  • You receive a VA pension.
  • You have an income below the maximum annual VA pension rate.
  • You can’t afford to pay for your travel, as defined by VA guidelines.
  • You’re traveling for a scheduled VA claim exam, also called a compensation and pension (C&P) exam), to get a service dog or for VA-approved transplant care.

Eligible Veterans can file claims for:

VA can also reimburse caregivers for transportation and related lodging and meals if they meet any one of the three requirements below:

  • They are a family caregiver under the National Caregiver Program traveling to receive caregiver training or support your care.
  • They are a medically required attendant traveling with you to support your care.
  • They are your transplant care donor or support person.

Before filing

Before filing a claim:

  1. Keep your receipts for all transportation and approved meals or lodging. Be sure to track your mileage to and from appointments.
  2. Set up direct deposit. VA will deposit reimbursements into your bank account.
  3. File your claim on time. You must file within 30 days of the appointment or 30 days from when you become eligible for reimbursement. File a new claim for each appointment.

To file a claim:

Use the step-by-step instructions online to file a claim through the Beneficiary Travel Self Service System (BTSSS) and refer to the Beneficiary Travel Frequently Asked Questions.

You can also file your claim by mail, fax, email or in-person at the VA facility where you received care. Complete the Veteran/Beneficiary Claim for Reimbursement of Travel Expense Form (VA Form 10-3542) and use the VA facility locator to find your facility’s contact information.

For assistance in addressing any issues or help with filing your travel claim, contact your local VA facility Beneficiary Travel point-of-contact.

Currently there is a backlog of over four-hundred thousand (400,000) paper healthcare claims nationwide”. The “paper healthcare claims” are claims where the VA requires proof of attendance for community care appointments and BTSSS cannot process attachments. Proof of attendance is not authorized for collection by OMB as required by the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 (44 USC 3501-3520). OMB control number 2900-0798 expired July 31, 2020.

I am 89 years old and can’t believe there is so much DERELICTION OF DUTY on the part of VA employees. I served 5 years and we frequently COURT MARTIAL ED active members for such NON-ACTION as to jeopardize other members or a whole unit.
Now I have attempted to speak to someone other than a tape recorder that never answers – who is cleaning it and not responding?
It has been TWO YEARS since I ran into the problem and was told “we are digitizing and will catch up”; well where is the RESULTS of the efforts of those who are paid more than the $55.00 a month I got for serving and the bull hockey statement I hear “Thank you for your service” GIVE ME SOME and I will believe you EARNED YOUR PAY.

  3. James Sosa April 25, 2024 at 21:48

The BTSSS is a convoluted mess. I have been bounced out of the system, had to get the state where /i was getting care changed, been denied claims and talked with many other vets who are so sick of the system the just don’t file.
More times than not there is no direct link to BTSSS that works. I have submitted claims and had the point of care changed. It is a disgrace that the Community Care Network is unable to verify the fact that we attended a visit…they have to pay those claims. I view the Beneficiary Travel system as a denial of service, not a service.

Comment: I work in an outpatient infusion clinic. Almost all the patients I treat, report they have not received travel reimbursement in a year or more. Most can not navigate the current system to claim travel pay. Many have resorted to paper claims when they check out and are not satisfied with the long delay and non-payment. They don’t understand why the kiosk system was replaced with a system they find difficult to use, causes them to resort to “work arounds” filing claims, and results in delays or non-payment of travel reimbursement. If a veteran files a claim for travel they deserve an explanation to advise if they will get paid or if payment is denied (and why). Why does this continue to be an issue?

  5. William Lesnock April 22, 2024 at 07:31

I received my travel claims in roughly 2 weeks up until 2021. Now they are running 7 weeks and longer! Not what I call prompt.

  6. Gloria Deleon April 20, 2024 at 11:37

I qualify for travel reimbursement from the VA however, at the Muskogee VA they’re so short of help that they are 6 months behind an issuing travel pay to qualifying veterans. I’ve given up applying for travel reimbursement after my visits because it doesn’t do any good right now

  7. Richard Holmes April 19, 2024 at 15:24

The travel reimbursement system worked easily in the past when checking out with your VA card following an appointment. When that was stopped, the system has become very difficult to use. I use a computer and it was difficult to figure out and to make sure every page is done correctly and to keep scrolling down. Then the 30day was added but nobody told us that. I don’t know how many were never processed or paid. I know now what to do, I think, but once entered they say under review but never are unless you call and ask the travel dept. to please process. What about those that do not have a computer or have difficulty? So simple before then made far to difficult now.

I can’t believe VA is trying to convince all veteran travel recipients that the new travel pay system is better. Since travel employees as well as their supervisors can’t give a specific date for when the system is supposed to actually kick in, why can’t they do their job and process travel claims at the window with the “magic wand”? Instead they accept paper claims and let them sit for God only knows how long so more than likely hoping the paper claims that a veteran submits will become lost in the shuffle! One can only imagine and more than likely know what that is all about! It’s been going on for a good 5 years or more now! NOT a Conspiracy! Just a Realistic view and observation! Since I filed my claim at the travel window April 4th, after I had labs and doctor appointment in same building before I left VA hospital, with a veteran travel agent and gave the claim to him by sliding it under window, how can ya’ll(VA) sit back and try to convince Veterans that our travel pay gets processed quickly and in a timely manner? I should have already been paid my claim by now! NOT! Today is the 20th of April. By the way, The overall supervisors in our VA Healthcare network have confirmed that they received mine but couldn’t tell me what specific date. I have had to cancel and reschedule appointments for not having enough money for gas to go to my appointments when I need to. I am low income and live on a fixed income and have guardianship of my grand baby. MY disability rating got reduced a few years ago due to “UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES.” I NEED MY TRAVEL TO TO PUT GAS IN MY CAR BE ABLE TO GET TO THE DOCTOR AND OTHER APPOINTMENTS WITHIN THE VA HEALTHCARE SYSTEM! I’m tired of the way the way VA has treated us with our Healthcare since before COVID! REMEMBER, IF IT WASN’T FOR ALL OF US VETERANS, ALL OF YA’LL WORKING IN THE VA WOULDN’T HAVE A JOB! FIX IT!!!!!

I thought things would be better since we were to apply online. I don’t think so. I got a text that informed me to fill out for my attending appointment. What happened. I sent in about 4 or 5 claims by mail. I have not heard any thing definitive yet, that is to my knowledge.

  11. James A. Blake April 14, 2024 at 06:20

The system has become unworkable and needs to be completely revamped. I am a retired systems engineer with a degree in computer science and have difficulty using the system. I suspect the average Joe has more problems with the site than do I. VA data processing systems are notoriously faulty, but the current system is worse than the previous. Please do something about this problem.

  12. Elias Huerta April 14, 2024 at 00:39

Your system sucks. I’m going to p t and the source is not on u r system. So I take paper work to v a hospital in Aurora and nothing. With the 30 day rule I don’t think it will get processed in time. Even the source that is listed I still won’t get it done cause it tells me the system is having issues and try later. What a mess.

I have not received my travel pay from two months ago. Apparently the wrong address was put on it and now they say I have to wait up to 8 weeks. They had to put a tracker on it and they can’t re issue until they find out what happened to other claim check first. They messed up but I need to wait another two months.

I am a 100% disabled Vet. I am treated at the Hampton, Virginia VA. I file the 10-3542 form every time I go to the VA for an appointment. I am wheel chair bound and my wife takes me to all appointments. I have not received travel pay since June, 2023. We have checked with the travel office 4 to 5 times and they tell us they are behind in payments and working on them. Right now I have 22 appointments that I have not received travel pay for. They don’t seem concerned. Every time I have gone to their office there have been other Vets in line asking the same thing. Your system is broken and someone needs to step up and fix it.

Comment on VA Regulations That Should Be Modified, Streamlined, Expanded or Repealed at https://www.va.gov/orpm/Regulations_To_Modify_Streamline_Expand_Repeal.asp

    See 38 CFR 70 Subpart A—Beneficiary Travel and Special Mode Transportation Under 38 U.S.C. 111 at https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-38/chapter-I/part-70/subpart-A

  19. JOHN D THOMPSON April 10, 2024 at 10:20

Congress did not authorize the Secretary to create approval criteria for 38 USC 111, “Payments or allowances for beneficiary travel”.

The Secretary unlawfully created approval and payment determination criteria via 38 CFR 70.4 (b) & (c) and reduced the payments or allowances for beneficiary travel by 50 percent:

“(b) When a claimant requests payment for beneficiary travel after the provision of care or services…, VA will approve roundtrip payment under this part only if the travel was:

    (1) In connection with care or services that were scheduled with VHA prior to arrival at the VHA-designated facility, or

    (2) For emergency treatment.

    (c) When a claimant requests payment for beneficiary travel for care or services that were not scheduled with VHA prior to arrival at the facility and were not emergency treatment…,VA will not approve round-trip payment under this part but will approve payment for the return trip if VHA actually provided care or services.”

38 USC 111: https://www.govinfo.gov/link/uscode/38/111 already provides the approval and payment criteria. It makes no distinction between scheduled and unscheduled appointments or routine and emergency appointments.

38 USC 111 (b)(1): “…the Secretary shall make the payments… for travel… for examination, treatment, or care for which the person is eligible.”

    Federal Register Vol 72, No 140, Monday July 23, 2007, Proposed Rules, 40097-40098: https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2007-07-23/pdf/E7-14069.pdf

“Proposed 70.4 provides a full list of the approval criteria that VA would apply to claims for beneficiary travel, including the individuals who would be eligible for benefits”.

Proposed 70.4 (b) and (c) “ensure that BT is… not merely to obtain cash for other reasons”

This logic inappropriate, counter to the will of Congress, and extremely offensive.

Claims have been, and are being, reduced for invalid cause for 16 years or more. It needs to stop.

Hello, good day. My husband and myself are currently in the Philippines. We would like to continue to have our physical exam here in the Philippines. Can you please give us information if its possible for us to be reimbursement for our travel expenses plus our airline tickets? We live in the middle part of the Philippines and the approved VA facility in Manila.

If we do have our yearly physical to the U.S., it will be in our expense or will be reimbursed for these?

    Thank you.

My travel pay claims were denied even when I had submitted proof of my appointment attendance form along with my travel pay claims. The reason for the denial was decided by the Travel Pay Department. On the VA.Gov website it is written to Fill out a Decision Review Request: Board Appeal (Notice of Disagreement) (VA Form 10182). Then bring your form and any supporting documents to a VA regional office. I do not need to waste days, weeks or months. I did not use the appeal process because I knew my travel pay claims were legit. There was absolutely no reason to deny any of my VA approved appointments for the treatment of my seizures. I was treated as if I was trying to file false travel pay claims. That angered and stressed me out to the point my seizures increased. I instead reported my travel pay claim denial issues to the FTC. Shortly after this my denied travel pay claims was suddenly approved. The Travel Pay Department did not even bother to look at my official consultation approval authorization letter for the treatment of my seizures which they had in their possession the entire time. I am a black, female soldier and veteran. I wonder if I was a male soldier would I have been treated with more respect and dignity. My answer is yes. Female veterans are treated poorly when dealing these types of departmental issues and have to be more aggressive in order to have their voice heard and their issues resolved. I was not even given an apology for their mistake. I am angry and insulted. I will not be quiet about this or any other form of nonsense. The following week I received the email from: news.va.gov//129612/veteran-travel-101-applying-for-reimbursement/ email. What nonsense.

  24. Johnny S Soriano April 8, 2024 at 13:57

At the VA Clinic in Manila, Philippines, I used to file for reimbursement for my travel from my home to Manila for my face-to-face appointment with my doctor. However, two or three years ago a message was posted on the Disbursing Office window of the clinic (where we turned in our travel claims) that said veterans who lived overseas could no longer file for travel reimbursement. Thought I thought this as “unfair” to us, overseas veterans, I took this as is and never filed for any travel after that. Additionally, I got rid of all my receipts thinking they’re of no use anymore. I’ve been to my face-to-face appointments at the VA Clinic in Manila two or three more times and twice to Lorma Hospital in San Fernando, La Union, for my C&P examinations for some claims I filed. Now since I just saw this Veterans Travel 101: Applying for Travel Reimbursement, my questions is, am I still entitled to file for travel incurred for my appointments to the VA Clinic in Manila and Lorma Hospital in San Fernando, La Union? Remember, I no longer have my receipts. Thanks for your response.

The VA Travel Reimbursement System is a joke. 30 days should not be a cutoff for getting our monies back. And…getting Dr. Notes to include, and answering VA calls to verify attending appts and the 2 travel employees with bad attitudes in Montgomery, AL, the months of backlog and the entire reimbursement system SUCKS, if a veteran makes a VA approved appt, the VA needs to put the responsibility of verifying we go to all these referrals and VA appointments in the VA travel system. I retired from Federal System and I did travel and it’s too much required by Travel to get reimbursed, at one time we received, CASH same day of appt at VA, and some referral contracted offices, gave checks upon completing an VA appt, then, the Direct Deposit system started, I have not received my travel since 2023, because, of the backlog first and having some erroneous reports of missed appts that I made. The system need to be as simple and VA placing checking kiosks in any contracted physician that is on the eligible lists for a Veteram to receive services. It’s that simple, and that the stress off, off, off of us! We have enough to do as it is, and becoming a travel assistant to get money back is ludacris… I’ve lost over $400.00 in travel reimbursements because, the VA travel employees are rude, lazy, over worked, and act like it’s their personal money..just revamp travel reimbursement…get debit cards, buy kiosks and place in Federal buildings US Wide, but what I do know is this, since the cash cage days of travel reimbursements….the VA has saved thousands if not millions, of travel pay for outside referrals that some veterans have no access to a computer, mailbox, printer, etc and the VA uses this pitfall as a way of saving alot of money that is owed to us!!!

    • Wayne Taylor April 8, 2024 at 09:58

      Hello Fellow Veteran,

I totally agree with your post , and veterans shouldn’t have to do all the work in nature of attaining their earn travel reimbursement.

I MADE 3 OR 4 TRIPS TO HALEY VA IN TAMPA AND NEVER GOT PAID FOR TRAVEL. I TRIED TO PUT IN A VOUCHER AT THE TIME AND THEY SAID THAT I HAD TO PUT IN FOR IT ON LINE. I’M 87 YRS OLD AND DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO THAT SO I HAVE QUIT GOING TO HALEY VA. I GO TO A CLINIC CLOSE BY IN RIVERVIEW, FLA. THEY DON’T HAVE AN OPTICAL DEPT. THERE SO I HAVE TO GO TO A CIVILIAN OPTICAL SHOP. I AM 100% DISABLED AND IT IS 33 MILES TO HALEY SO I WILL NEVER GO THERE ANY MORE. I AM DISGUSTED WITH THE SITUATION. SO MUCH FOR THE BENIFITS.

  29. JOHN D THOMPSON April 7, 2024 at 10:08

Congress did not authorize the Secretary to create additional determination crtitera. Veterans Affairs has no discretion in this matter.

The Secretary unlawfully created additional determination criteria for approval and payment and denies the benefit via 38 CFR 70.20 (e):

“(e) If VA determines that additional information is needed to make a determination concerning an application under this part, VA will notify the claimant in writing of the deficiency and request additional information. If the claimant has not responded to the request within 30 days, VA may decide the claim prior to the expiration of the 1-year submission period required by 38 U.S.C. 5103(b)(1) based on all the information contained in the file, including any information it has obtained on behalf of the claimant. If VA does so, however, and the claimant subsequently provides the information within 1 year of the date of the request, VA must readjudicate the claim.”

38 USC 111 https://www.govinfo.gov/link/uscode/38/111 already provides the determination criteria. It does not establish criteria such as proof of attendance, completion of appointment documentation, or provider updates to medical records.

38 USC 111 (b)(1) “…the Secretary shall make the payments… for travel… for examination, treatment, or care for which the person is eligible.”

VHA did not, and has not, requested the collection of proof of attendance documentation.
OMB did not, and has not, approved the collection of proof of attendance documentation.

The VHA Request for OMB Review and Emergency PRA Clearance Reinstatement of OMB Control No. 2900-0798 (VHA Form 10-3542 and BTSSS) https://www.reginfo.gov/public/do/DownloadDocument?objectID=139655800 and “Supporting Statement A https://www.reginfo.gov/public/do/DownloadDocument?objectID=139524500, both uploaded 02/08/2024, correctly state:

“Determination criteria for claimant qualification and trip reimbursement are stated in 38 U.S.C. Section 111.”

“VHA must determine the identity of the claimant, the dates and length of the trip being claimed based on addresses of starting and ending points, and whether expenses other than mileage are being claimed. The claimant is required to sign the form.”

Claims have been, and are being, denied for invalid cause for 16 years or more. It needs to stop.

I am a 100% permanently disabled vet from the Vietnam era. I have previously posted comment here, but after reading the postings from other vets, feel some clarity might help. While the VA and it’s programs have greatly improved the quality of my life, travel reimbursement seems to be broken.

I re-read the comments about travel reimbursement last night. Seems to me that they fall into three categories:

First, there is a very small percentage who say they have no problem with the system. I salute them!

Second, there are a few, who clearly need assistance as to how to use the system at all. Because of their lack of familiarity with the system, their comments sometimes miss the mark. In their defense, not all veterans can be expected to be tech agile. It is not a good sign that these people are being left behind by Beneficiary Travel.

Then there is a large contingent who knows how to use the system reasonably well, but find the results inconsistent, arbitrary, or consistently unsatisfactory. I suspect that this third group represents a fairly true picture of the problems. It seems to me that the web based system of application for reimbursement was built by a vendor who will never need to rely on the system they designed. Therefore, since they aren’t part of their own client base, they’ll never see the problems…..and what you don’t see, you can’t fix.

Additionally, the $6.00 copay makes no more sense than the requirement for the vet to submit proof of attending VACCN appointments.

For my part, until the VA contacts me to announce they have fixed the problems, or have gone back to a more user friendly means of reimbursement (perhaps a hybrid approach would allow all veterans to participate), I plan to absorb the costs of travel myself and waste none of my time playing “reimbursement roulette” with VA. That seems to be a corruption of the principles for which the VA is supposed to stand.

    • D. Distelrath April 9, 2024 at 03:10

Fix The Broken BTSS! Many veterans do not, cannot use this standalone system which follows no logical path of reasoning to get “Reimbursed” for the travel that we veterans are due!
      Fix it VA!!!

I was thrown off for reimbursement for mileage because of a couple of hearing exams were paid automatically..but going to VA scheduled appointment were never paid..so I just gave up trying to get them…I wonder where and who received the milage payments I was intitled to..

  32. Eric P Krol April 6, 2024 at 16:36

Travel pay article was satisfactory but the VA will pay in +60 days…why so long and they require proof of performance when submitting an appointment for Community Care.
The VA implemented the Lock Box payment for Rx as a cost reduction for payment processing to one location , a good move for a Treasury procedure!

Are we so different as a company can gossip like birds in the morning, follow and attack somebody that has been through so so much. I am disappointed with you, and disappointed in your behavior. No warnings, no basic ethical values from your mothers fathers and grandparents. Let me tell you a story, there was a king fu master that practiced his skill or Kung Fu every day as a way to live and function. He never had much money but every day would look at his Kung Fu and train with a method that consistent and patience. Others would talk, and pay for guns and battons. But the Master continued to train, and train to the point that that bigger companies the majority would become spiteful and angry. They attacked his family because they could not attack him because of his trainings. They lied about names that assumed things that did not make sense and had no sense, because dispite it was good that there familys had money they became victims of circumstance. They could not walk as far as the master they could not talk like the master, but the Master serves them in safety and security with out there guns and battons. Would they take offense to a tribal challenge to prove the validity of the gossip, prove the Truth, in the old way, the honest way, the first way? The master is small not big but the ones that gossip are big strong and tuff. The Master has few moneys, but the gossip are well off much moneys. So why can the master beat them at nothing with nothing. The master can see with out using his eyes. Do they see with out eyes? Do they run with no legs. Who is more fit, for this types of service?

Why does the VA clinic Manila deny all travel claims even if the vet meets the requirements? In fact they completely stopped accepting any travel claims 10 years ago.

  35. (BUTCH) April 6, 2024 at 11:54

I’m 100% and have yet to file for mileage due to a system that is complicated ,confusing and made to discourage VETERANS. I’m a VIEN NAM VET, my son transports me to my scheduled appointments 90 miles one way.

  36. Ernest Waltman April 6, 2024 at 10:59

This is not true i was driving 71 miles one way to the va and they refused me travel pay. So i switched to coummity care.

  37. Danny Aschebrook April 6, 2024 at 08:02

The original system where we could file for our travel pay at the VA immediately after our at the kiosk after our appointment was easy and efficient. The new method requires a computer science degree and takes an enormous amount of time which I’m sure benefits the VA because most older veterans are not able to get through all the steps in the 30 days to get everything right to get the travel pay. Just try it some time. And before all we had to do was check out once for all the days appointments. Now you have to do each appointment individually and hope you put in the most important one first or the days travel could be based on that. Please just go to a system that is simple and easy for everyone! Thank you for your time!

BTSSS doesn’t work on my iPhone. I have to use my computer which is cumbersome. Also, BTSSS says my reimbursement money is around $18 and I only get paid around $12 per visit. If BTSSS shows I had an appointment and I completed the visit… why do I need to fill out anything? You know I was there.

  39. Jerry Nuckles April 6, 2024 at 00:23

In the past year the V. A. has not reimbursed me for about one half of my summitted travel vouchers. I do not understand why.

All were summited at the Salem V. A. at time of my appointment and dropped off at the reimbursement window/box.

I will have to quite going to my appointments if this keeps happening. Please remit these. I

If the money spent, by the V. A. to send ” HOW ARE WE DOING LETTERS”, to all veterans. and put toward real expenses, then the V. A. would be able to help veterans with their travel pay.

Not to mention all the trinkets that the V. A. has made, I E, dog tags with V. A. messages, Rubber band wrist bracelets with a message on them, ball point pen, etc etc.

Not an overly definitive article on specifics of eligibility criteria. A lot of word salad.

  44. Bill Carter April 5, 2024 at 18:05

It has been several years since I received any travel pay. I have sent several requests from Jessy Brown and Adam Benjamin. I have a 100% VA rating.

  45. Lou B April 5, 2024 at 16:50

It is obvious that the system is broken. I have had multiple visits, (more than two), throughout the past years to only show two relationships pulled in the BTSSS.
    1. As shown below:
    Type Date Description Requested Submitted
    Mileage Expense for Claim # TC202212009XXXXX 08/15/2022 (Miles: 130.86) $54.31 $48.31
    Total $48.31
Funds never allocated to my account. Where the money go??

    2. Feet problems in calendar year 2023, part of my disability. No relationship established in BTSSS.
    3. Follow up to number two above, relation was established in BTSSS. Claim requested in March 2024 and is pending.

Unfortunately, I feel as a second class citizen. Does anyone care, does anyone has the desire to fix this?

    https://www.king.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/081123mainelettertosecvaonbtsss.pdf

    August 15, 2023,

    Dear Secretary McDonough,

We write to bring to your attention obstacles veterans in Maine and across the country face in
receiving mileage reimbursement for travel to and from Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and
VA-authorized care. As you know, the Beneficiary Travel Self Service System (BTSSS) was introduced
as the new payment processing system for mileage reimbursement, replacing the legacy Veterans
Health Information System and Technology Architecture (VistA) system. The VA has spent billions of
taxpayer dollars on its roll out, yet BTSSS is riddled with complications that negatively impact
veterans. As we discussed in your recent trip to Maine, we strongly encourage the VA to look into
the issues with BTSSS to ensure our veterans receive the best service possible, and allow Maine
veterans to continue to utilize in-person travel reimbursements options.

BTSSS is intended to replace the legacy VistA system, which is prone to inefficiencies, and provide
veterans with a more reliable travel reimbursement process. While we recognize and commend that
BTSSS is addressing some of the problems experienced with VistA, such as duplicate payments, it is
clear the new system has its own significant issues. For instance, although BTSSS provides the
ability to submit and review the status of a claim, it only does so for veterans who have access to
the internet and are adept with a computer. With around half of Maine veterans over the age of 65,
and over 60% of our veterans living in rural areas of Maine, this creates unnecessary obstacles due
to unreliable internet access and computer proficiency.

The BTSSS system also has a number of flaws that delay the processing of a travel claim and cause
unnecessary hardship for veterans. For example, if a veteran has to bypass a closer VA medical
facility to go to a different one or a community provider for specialty care, this cannot be
automatically processed by BTSSS. Instead, the system creates an error that has to be manually
reviewed and overridden by a VA employee, causing significant delays. Additionally, for veterans
with multiple addresses, such as snowbird veterans, BTSSS is unable to recognize and pull a
secondary address to process mileage. The error created by this issue requires veterans to contact
the VA to get the staff to manually override the system to allow for payment.
Furthermore, a May 2023 report from the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) found that BTSSS fell
drastically short of all of its system performance goals.

We have received a significant amount of correspondence from Maine veterans confused and frustrated
by the BTSSS system. Given the difficulties veterans face receiving reimbursement
through the new system, we are concerned that VA may soon remove the option for Maine
veterans to use VistA, forcing all travel reimbursements to be processed via the current BTSSS
system without addressing its many faults. This would undoubtedly add to the hardships of veterans
instead of alleviating them. The VA’s efforts to modernize are appreciated, but all efforts should
be made to ensure the burden of these changes is not placed on our veterans. We therefore strongly
encourage the VA to address these and any other previously unforeseen issues surrounding BTSSS
before removing VistA as an option for Maine veterans.

We look forward to your response to the following questions:

    – Will the VA ensure that Maine veterans have access to the VistA reimbursement system until the
significant issues with BTSSS have been properly addressed?

    – How does the VA plan to fix the processing issues with non-standard reimbursement claims on
BTSSS before entirely replacing the VISTA system?

    – How does the VA intend to address the impact of limited computer access and proficiency on
older, rural veterans seeking mileage reimbursement?

    – Will VA implement the two recommendations from the OIG’s May 2023 report on the BTSSS program?

We appreciate your efforts to reimburse Maine veterans for their VA related travel expenses without
facing unnecessary obstacles. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

    Sincerely,

    ANGUS S. KING, JR.

I am a 100% disable veteran with stage 4 cancer. I go to external doctors so my appointments rarely get logged in. Recently I had a physical 100 miles away and it was declined. I also requested a night stay 100 miles away the days we had 40 below 0; my appointment was at 5 so we spent the night. This too was declined. Then afterwards a follow with my urologist after my surgery all of them at Froederts which is listed and all were declined.

This system just does not work. I will be challenging them through the trial which is yet more of a waste of money and time rather than paying me what I am entitled to.

Ladies and Gents; this simply just is not working for me. Maybe this is a way to save a lot of money for the VA, but this is truly a diservice to a veteran with Stage 4 cancer. To begin with, I did not ask for this cancer.

  49. Richard Smith April 5, 2024 at 13:59

I go to Lake City & Gainesville, Fl from Valdosta Ga (80% rating)one way about 100 & 130. respectively I file all my travel claims on line and is quite easy. HOWEVER, all my claims are always listed as “in manual review” and I was told you have to call Travel office to release. The problem is that it is EXTREMELY difficult to get through as no one answers at times and if you can get to leave a message, (mailbox is very often full) nobody EVER call back & if fortunate to get through will still take 3 or 4 more calls to finally get direct deposit released. Almost all claim s have no additional items to submit, when signed up was told a week tops to get paid. Very cumbersome for online filing

    • Lloyd Omps April 9, 2024 at 13:45

when I had travel claims ‘in manual review’ I called the supervisor in Baltimore and this was the unbelieveable answer she gave me: ‘that means they (the financial disbursement people who are in ANOTHER STATE and evidently have no motivation to do their job) just haven’t gotten around to it yet!!
I found her comment beyond belief and completely unsatisfactory. Can you imagine any civilian bank or financial enterprise getting away with this imbecilic response. The Baltimore Office is inept in the extreme and they talk to us (vets) like they’re too busy to help. Guess what? They ARE too busy because they’re always ‘in training’. What they’re training for God only knows but I think it’s another CYA less. They live to deny our legitimate complaints in any way possible and should all lose their jobs for stealing our benefits

  50. Scott April 5, 2024 at 11:25

From article “You can’t afford to pay for your travel, as defined by VA guidelines.”

Yet the Minneapolis VA Healthcare system takes over two months to receive travel pay (appt Jan 22 and get travel pay Apr 1!

I’m not hurting but I know there vets that are in need of the travel pay immediately and having to wait over two months is a DISGRACE!

On top of that submitting travel pay is also a disgrace! Bring back the kiosks! Older vets are tasked with logging in to file? Providing travel voucher at appt isn’t hard but there is no proof of doing so. Not unheard of the voucher “getting lost.” The kiosk provided a receipt showing it was submitted. In addition when deposited there was number on deposit that coincided with number on kiosk receipt.

  51. David Jarvis April 5, 2024 at 10:22

What if a poor smuck does not have a 30% rating? Lives on less than 2k a month? Are we out of luck here I also take the train and trax do you reimburse for that also? I agree with so many others on this travel pay, it is broken, My sisters husband traveled to the va filled out form and recived a check for .25 cents, like wow you are generous. You Broke this now fix it.

  52. John S Gilboy April 5, 2024 at 07:38

This is all fine and dandy if it works correctly. I have a hearing disability, totally deaf in one ear. I was contacted by the VA Minneapolis for hearing checkup and new hearing aids a couple of years ago. Made the 200 mile round trip twice, once for the tests, again for the new hearing aids. I filled out travel pay reimbursement before I departed the facility each time. I never received a penny.
    Very disappointed in the system

I went to an appointment in Philly on April 3 rd . I USAlly fill out the paperwork there but this I got a message saying I could fill it out on my phone . I answered the questions . It said to check the status on a secure site i logged onto one I believe was my health vet anyways it kept saying there was an error and log out and try later . Could you check to make sure it was done correctly . Thank you .

  54. Mike Vasaitis April 5, 2024 at 02:04

I live in Japan and travel almost every 3 months to Manila for my VA appointments. Manila is the closest VA facility. I was told by the VA that I do NOT get reimbursed for anything. The VA said since it’s my choice to live in Japan then I have to pay for everything and won’t get reimbursed for anything. Then I seen this article and it says I should be able to get reimbursed.

  55. Jeanne Neveau-Smith April 5, 2024 at 01:56

Why is the process so complicated to file a claim? I do it and by the time I realize it’s not paid yet the 30 days is past. We are out several 100 !
I like to think I’m average tech savvy but this process is ridiculous!

  56. Karen L Butler April 4, 2024 at 22:35

The online system works good for me. I create my own appointment in the system when it’s not there for all my community care appointments. If the location is not on the list I contact travel and get that location loaded within a few days. Once I have created my voucher and have uploaded my document showing I attended that appointment I certify it by signing it. I then call the travel section and let them know I have a voucher to be processed and they add it to their list to be processed for that day. So far it have worked way better than manual voucher that take up to three months sometime. I’m getting paid within one to two weeks.

    • Phil Q Jones April 5, 2024 at 11:01

Are appts. Schedualed.by Care in the Community covered.

About Travel: Where I go to VA is in Hopkinsville, Ky. I travel from Guthrie, Ky. which is about 20 to 25 miles. Would I get travel pay for that?

  58. Lawrence swift April 4, 2024 at 22:00

I find it easier to just absorb the cost of travel rather than submit a claim. I’m just thankful for treatment. I’m frustrated however for traveling so far from home to a compensation exam when the exam should be scheduled closer. I’m to old to travel far and pay someone to go with me. Other than that the VA takes good care of me and Community Care helps a lot
    THANKS VA AND CC.

  59. Catharine April 4, 2024 at 21:37

Ever since they started to be using the Smartphone app, I’ve been unable to put in any travel claims. That was a couple years ago, and I long ago gave up. Someone knows most veterans are not computer geniuses and pocket the unclaimed funds. The only way I’d ever expect to get my travel money will be if there is a class action lawsuit and appointments are added up from the time of the app until now. Most likely that will not happen. Someone is getting rich off of this.

  60. Kenneth Edward Lamb April 4, 2024 at 21:31

  61. Jason R. Taylor April 4, 2024 at 21:11

I was excited when reading the headline but in typical VA fashion, there’s no explanation of how to navigate the garbage BTSSS. Community Care appointments happen often when you live 130 miles from a VA hospital. The travel window associates at the Birmingham VAMC have better things to do than help a vet file a voucher. This process it broken and although I have requested the numbers on VA cost savings (since we can rarely file and receive our travel pay now) but the lower level fellow they had call me had no info or answers. The only way to get rid of BTSSS is by act of Congress and that’s not happening. The bureaucratic jerk that implemented BTSS should be forced to receive their paycheck via this system.

  62. Jo April 4, 2024 at 20:50

The VA travel plan was once good now it’s horrible all because some supposed misuse, ok for our representatives to misuse funds but a few bad apple-veterans and they screw us all

  63. Joseph F. Thornton April 4, 2024 at 18:56

Why do I only get paid half when I have to travel to the emergency room when I have to travel round trip? If I takke the ambulance the charge is $1600.00 for each trip and I only get $14.00 for the same trip? I am 100 % Service Connected.

  64. Catharine Bevona April 4, 2024 at 18:17

I gave up when my VA in Boston adopted a method that had to be done through a Smartphone app. It was very complicated. There probably is a very good reason for that because govt. officials and those in Congress want to save money so they can get pay increases and trips on it. Screwing over the veterans through this is the very best way. They know that most veterans are not Autistic savants when it comes to handling abstract Smartphone apps. They must get a fortune through this system. Back when it was done by a person at a desk who went online I would get my travel pay. Now I do not

  65. CARLOS PEREZ April 4, 2024 at 18:07

I claimed a travel expense back in January and until today nothing happens yet.

  66. Ronald Slater April 4, 2024 at 17:43

Make it more complicated for us old non-geek types. Will save VA money.

  67. Al Parso April 4, 2024 at 17:41

It used to be that I stopped at a desk at the VA Hospital and they put in the request but they won’t do it anymore. I’ve tried using the computer but it never works. My appointments are never there. I add them but nothing happens. Why isn’t there someone to call for help?

I received a ticket for crossing the street, I was getting racially profiled before. I am a mynority Veteran, that has a vast unique experience. There is a veterans retirement home that is close, but the only VAMC is 15-20 miles away. I rode a bike before because there was complications getting to VA facility. The Agent Cashier, at my local VAMC, is friendly. Is the Trips to the VAMC worth four hours bike riding? And then having arguments about travel rembusment? Honesty, there has been debate after debate and after hour’s, day’s week’s and months people back out and real lack face. COM SEC has all pertaint files DD-214’s, medical records ext some other files require SAPs. Not everyone is mature enough. And some cause issues “it is what it is,” but it is not a buessnies it’s a life style page by page, word by word, and day by day. The poverty level in the United States is $15,060 for a single person. “Google.” If a person has served in the military and went to the war because of low economic level and low educational level of parents then this was a attempt to get out of poverty. In USA there has been a history of Slavery and unequality based off of race. It is a historical fact, immigrants face this challenge attempt to improve the quality of life, by changing the environment. The terminology that apply’s is “Environment Dictates.” A cultural conflict has been scribed in the history book and a we have developed a phycological view points based off of education. 68. Ronald L Williams April 4, 2024 at 17:38

Why is the VA making it harder and harder to receive travel pay? I have given up on trying to receive travel if the VA has set up rehab outside of the VA Hospital.

  69. Leo April 4, 2024 at 17:08

BTSSS is really worthless, never consistent. I filed two claims on the same date for two different two different appointment dates to the same clinic. One was paid correctly for a roundtrip mileage of 62 miles. The other, same distance, indicated they paid for 2.7 miles (really?), which of course I never received any payment.

Anyway, long story short, there is no way to dispute the erroneous payment through BTSSS website. Therefore, I called my area Benefit Travel representative three different days in which I left messages. Of course, they don’t ever answer the phone or call you back. So that means, I will have to waste time and mileage just to visit the representative in person in hope that he will be in his office.

Bring back the kiosk or automatically submit travel claims upon check-in with the VA Clinic or Hopital.

  70. Noneya Beeze April 4, 2024 at 17:03

Put the kiosks back in the VAMCs for travel. This is just another way to deny and deny and never pay anyone for anything. I’ve been submitting forms for two years and not been paid a dime.

  73. Davids April 4, 2024 at 15:46

Obviously, a veteran is not writing this article! After 38 years using the VA for care, we have had good and bad travel pay systems. The best working system was the Kiosk. Its only weakness was a two-step process. First having to check-in then request travel pay.
An optimal system would be to integrate travel pay with our medical appointments or if you don’t trust veterans to do their best to be honorable bring back the Kiosk.

    • Lloyd Omps April 8, 2024 at 13:47

it’s not the VETs who are dishonorable, it’s the VA and their inside cronies who know how to scam the system. These inside career criminals are very skilled at STEALING the benefits of legitimate Vets who need these medical apppointments that are miles away from home. They claim (Booz-Allen-Hamilton) to have provided a functional system, but it is Boos, etc., who are stealing the millions from their Pentagon contract. I hope they all burn in hell for how they’ve stolen and continue to steal from us

  74. Keith L. Wells April 4, 2024 at 15:27

#1 – With the RISING cost of fuel when will the V.A. increase the rate per mile reimbursed?
#2 – The BTSSS page DOES NOT have the SANTA ROSA SOUTH V.A. clinic programed in their system which causes me to print a travel claim and hand carry or mail to the the V.A. In this day and age of automation and technology I would think this would have been solved. Ive brought this issue to the attention of the V.A. in Santa Rosa several time and it’s still not fixed.

    • Clark April 4, 2024 at 17:05

  75. Clay April 4, 2024 at 15:16

    ONE question not answered –
How do we appropriately ‘prove’ we attended the appointment?

I’ve learned there is some difference between a doctor’s appointment for diagnosis and a doctor’s or therapist’s appointment for treatment in this system.

They system automatically accepts and sees when a diagnosis type appointment is attended, and approves the expense… but not a treatment type appointment.

WHY? If the appointment is in the exact same location, with the exact same provider – why then do I need to (apparently) print out a doctor’s note like I’m in grade school to prove I attended the appointment?

    • David April 4, 2024 at 19:20

The kiosk worked best out of a bunch of bad travel pay reimbursement. The way it is set up now there’s nothing but bureaucracy and red tape that frustrates the veteran. I have applied for this through your login system and have yet to receive three travel pay reimbursements since January and it is now April 2, like I repeatedly say the network engineers who are in charge of these government contracts all need to be fired.

  76. David April 4, 2024 at 14:29

The online system has flaws. I had therapy at Community Care in the morning. Subsequently, I had an in-house appt at the West L.A. hospital. I submitted both for reimbursement. One was denied and one was approved. WTH is wrong with the system. I was told because the system thinks I’m double dipping since I had two travel claims same day. Please fix the system to make it more efficient and easier for us veterans. Thank you and have a great day…

The kiosk system made the Travel Pay issue better for me, a 72 yr. old female that was not born with a stylus or mouse in my hand. C’mon give us older veterans a chance. And I do not know of anyone who succeeded getting travel pay when using community care.

    • Agustin April 4, 2024 at 22:14

I agree. We don’t get travel pay for Community Care appointments because they do not list the appointments on the reminders. Therefore, it is not recognized. this is a problem.

  78. Phil Swinford April 4, 2024 at 13:03

Since the BTSSS was incorporated I don’t think I’ve had a single travel reimbursement. The problem seems to be the MapQuest map the system uses to calculate travel distance. It always hangs up on that step. This happens at the kiosk, as well.

You need to update the travel distance functionality or just let the Veteran manually enter the distance. If you don’t fix the program you might as well stop paying travel pay because a benefit a Veteran can’t get isn’t a benefit, it’s a headache.

  79. David Syverson April 4, 2024 at 12:50

I’ve been accused of abuse of the new online system when contacting the gatekeeper for SEA. He said I summitted too many claims for the same appointment. Okay guilty because I keep clicking submit while attempting to navigate its pages and steps. Never got reimbursed!

Why not have a single page that has all our appointments and home address so we only need to click a box? This could be a simple question in the appointment check-in process

The current system, as many have commented, is an arcane outdated design that would be better with a community vision of its intended use. Why is there not a focal (veteran uses and designers) group engaged in planning a better system?

The iPhone App doesn’t work, even the people at the travel desk say it doesn’t work since it logs you out and you have to enter UID and PW every time. Who can memorize all their UID’s and a secure password for every account? Why not use Face ID?

Reverting back to paper isn’t where we should be. The only way I can earn reimbursement is by filling out the form and giving that paper to the travel office at the VA hospital. I’ve never been able to get reimbursed for Community Care at other facilities. The current system is broken!

  80. Michael Stoll April 4, 2024 at 12:48

No where to complain about VES and Optum Care not reimbursing for mileage traveled while traveling to a scheduled VA claim exam, also called a compensation and pension (C&P) exam). Exam dates of Feb. 21st 2023 and Feb. 23rd 2023. Round trip mileage of 80 and 96 miles respectively. Contract for Optum Serve says they have 30 days to reimburse which they are totally outside that window. Like most VA contractors there is no oversight or audits to ensure they are abiding by terms of the contract. And as usual no where to complain about these companies. Just more good buddy fat cat government contracts to companies that just take the money. Appears like I will have to get my congressman and US senators involved just like I did when the glorious VA made it near impossible for me to file a claim. Without their intervention claim may have never been made. VA should be ashamed. I would get better service if I was an illegal.

  81. Jim April 4, 2024 at 12:45

So WHY doesn’t the VA reimburse our volunteer drivers in the DAV van when WE take them to the appointment, instead, and have to use our own cars (POV) to pick up the DAV van? That mileage should be reimbursed at the same rates. In my own case, I have to drive 28 miles to pick up the DAV van for each veteran’s appointment. Many of these veterans are so ill that they cannot drive themselves. We volunteers are, after all, doing a service for free that the VA should be doing.

  82. Navy Guy April 4, 2024 at 11:49

I had issues in the beginning, it’s annoying to sign into multiple .gov’s , but i understand the security measures. The newer site does work better than last year. No issues with submitting and payment. I’m surprised no one is blaming Biden, haha

  83. Scarlet King April 4, 2024 at 11:41

I’ve tried the online system to file and it has worked for me except when I have a community care appointment outside of the VA. For example I had to have two root canals both times I had to Uber there and my son pick me up after. The Uber was $30 each time and I can’t file online because the appointment doesn’t show up. Please fix it so I can file my community care appointments reimbursement. Thank you

  84. Robert Frost April 4, 2024 at 11:40

It is very difficult to electronically file VA travel benefits online.
Putting the VA Travel completely online has excluded most of the elder veterans from getting their travel pay as they have little to no computer skills. Which makes it appear that this was done for EXACTLY that purpose and to further limit Veteran’s ability to collect their VA Travel Pay.

Even those that are well versed with computers and online systems are having constant problems accessing their VA Travel Benefits Online.

Since the VA took travel pay off of the kiosks, I have essentially not been able to get my VA travel pay. I have tried using your VA online travel benefits system (https://www.va.gov/health-care/get-reimbursed-for-travel-pay/) and have set up accounts with each of the available login systems (Login.gov, ID.me, DS Logon, & My HealtheVet) in order to get access, but your online VA travel pay system NEVER WORKS or never works with any of these various login systems!!!

I have lost probably 95% my travel pay reimbursements since 2019 because of problems within your online system! I have been to the travel pay offices with my login information where THEY couldn’t even get access the VA Travel pay system for themselves so they could help me with my VA Travel Pay.
Now with the online VA travel pay system severely limiting claims to the last “30 days”, veterans can’t recoup any of their travel pay that they couldn’t file with the online travel pay system due to the constant failures with the VA Travel pay website. This includes problems with logging in, as well as when you can get access where the VA Travel Pay system goes to error during the claim creation process, or how the VA website is so tediously slow to perform any action or function to process EACH claim individually (Your claim is being created. This could take a few minutes. Please wait..).

To make it clear I can access site like my healthy vet but the embedded VA travel pay links that transfers you to the VA Travel Pay website (https://dvagov-btsss.dynamics365portals.us/signin) most often comes back with various errors that are too many to list. If or when you can gain access, the VA Travel Pay system is “Suppose to” list you VA appointments for the past 30 days, but rarely shows even half of the in-house VA appointments if you are lucky.
Why doesn’t the VA make the WHOLE VA Travel Pay process simpler by generating every Veteran’s VA Travel pay upon their check in to their VA appointments? The VA knows when you both check in and check out to your in-house VA appointment, so why does the VA make the VA Travel pay process so tedious? That is also simple as it to make the VA Travel pay process as difficult and as tedious as possible so the VA doesn’t have to payout all of the VA travel pay that is rightfully due to the veterans.

Filing each individual travel claim from the provided list of the VA appointments already in the system online should NOT have to be done separately. The VA should make a line of check boxes for ALL of the known VA appointments where the travel pay could be done with clicking a box for “all appointments” an then a single click to file all of those already listed VA appointments at once.

As an example of how slow the VA Travel pay website is, I had seven VA appointments at the VA facilities that showed up for the past 30 days in the VA travel Pay portal. In the time it took the VA travel Claims portal (the btts dashboard) to process 3 out of the 7 of the available VA appointments for their travel claims, I was able to write all of the above comments. That may not sound like a long time but if you take into account that my typing ability is poor at best where I still have to look at the keyboard while I hunt and peck with 2 finger to type it all out may add some perspective in just how slow the VA Travel pay portal is to use. That was 2.5 hours to put through 3 out of the 7 available appointments listed in the VA travel Claim portal. And I’m not including the time it took the VA travel pay portal to work so I could actually sign in to it without getting some sort of error message problem.

If you haven’t gathered it by now, just know that the whole VA travel pay online process is absolutely crap to the point of being barely usable, if you’re lucky. Add to that the nonsense of the VA’s 30 days to file VA Travel pay limitation policy, and you might be able to understand in a tiny way why so many veterans are so crabby or pissed off.

    • David Syverson April 4, 2024 at 12:53

100% agree. It was dependably working well with the Kiosk system.

    • John Farley April 4, 2024 at 13:06

I agree with Mr. frost comments totally

  85. Larry Norris April 4, 2024 at 11:34

Why can we not go back to the touch screen system with our VA health cards ? It was scan card , enter birth date , yes that’s me , requesting travel , and done . This system was up and running , You checked in for Appointments and did not f need staff to check you in . Seems Very hard the system that we have to use now and most who use new system takes too much time and too many steps and needs direct link

  86. Andrew Null April 4, 2024 at 11:28

The older way of submitting travel claims while at the medical center using your veteran ID took seconds to do and you were done. The new system takes any where from 5-10 minutes to complete claim. Why can’t the scheduling system just know you completed your appointment and your claim be automatically submitted for you? Please make things easier not harder.

  87. whitten robert April 4, 2024 at 11:22

why when i go to tyler va and sbmit a travel request via btsss system i get approved and paid in about a week , when i go to the dallas va ( regularly due to cancer ) and submit a claim in the same fashion it get’s thrown into manual review for a couple months . i’m on ssi and most times have to borrow money for fuel to make these many trips ??? Thank You

  88. Kevin Williams April 4, 2024 at 11:21

Travel pay has been inaccurate in my case. I was living 44 miles from my appointments at the VA. I hadn’t been reimbursed but submitted my claim. I moved to within 21 miles of where my appointments were. Travel finally paid me months after moving but at my new addresses distance not my old one. To make it worse I was homeless for several of the appointments and the distance was 55 miles. All that was ignored and simply deny me an honest equal treatment. Travel department owes me several hundred dollars.

  89. Tony April 4, 2024 at 11:06

Never had a BTSSS approved yet. Had a paper claim denied because it was kicked back because claim’s wanted me to us BTSSS.
I find it next to impossible to excess, tired to link my back several times for DD. My claim statuses are either denied or incomplete.
VA was us to use BTSSS, then may it easy for us to use.

  90. Amber Koeller April 4, 2024 at 10:55

I have been fighting with the VA for over 2 1/2 years. They now owe my husband well over $300. Some of it dating as far back as the beginning of 2022. In Dec I was told all of 2022 had been paid, yet the proof of payments they sent me the prior May showed otherwise. Just yesterday, I was told they are still working on 2022. So which is it? Even if you inquire on a specific claim, the answer is always the same… “We’re working on it. Be patient.” They won’t even acknowledge whether the claim was even received. So I feel all of everyone’s pain here. The system does not work and requesting an audit does nothing.

  91. James Clark April 4, 2024 at 10:51

So funny. When in Reno, we had a kiosk and I could claim in less than 30 seconds for travel. I move to Phoenix and there is a Kiosk, but it was usually broken. I guess maintenance technology is challenging here in Arizona. Simply do it Reno style. Now I have to do this new OBSTACLE. Easy? Get a life! NOT EASY. No wonder the Phoenix V A had the biggest scandal that had Veterans dying due to incompetent administrators!

  92. Melanie Kuehn April 4, 2024 at 10:48

30 days is too short if an appointment shows up on VA site then we should be able to file a claim. I recommend up to one year due to many have to recover and filing online is not the first thing we think of. That and the site is not user friendly even with your video. Taking away the ability to file at the VA did not make this easier. Many vets don’t even know how to get online.

  93. Daniel Schneider April 4, 2024 at 10:32

I followed the instructions to a “T” lst year and never received my submitted pay, the system sucks and doesn’t work, please fix it

  94. Matt Ovaska April 4, 2024 at 10:28

I don’t think I can afford to go to the VA any longer. I can take care of myself Ending up home less is expensive than paying taxes
    to support the VA

  95. Jack Collin Campbell April 4, 2024 at 10:26

The travel pay system is really bad-I tried 3 times and still is’nt resolved they keep saying the wrong direct deposit bank I put in the right information and still nothing happens-called the number that was listed still no help-so did’nt get paid for that appointment-definitely should be a easier option-

  96. Roger Thompson April 4, 2024 at 10:24

Approved out of Va appointment you have to be a lawyer to claim. By internet

  97. James Jennings April 4, 2024 at 10:19

Using travel reimbursement online has NEVER been user friendly. I have been denied several times because I file and get a message it is incomplete and by the time I either figure it out or get help from travel, I am denied because it went over 30 days.
Speaking 30 days the veteran has 30 days to file a claim and travel can take as long as they want to make payment to the veteran. I have waited several months to get paid, you can check my records.
Some veterans have canceled appt because no money to travel or can’t afford to wait months to get paid.
I have notified patient advocate and no reply, just forwarded it to travel.
I have mental health issues and this this type of stress does not help.
No lip service, just do something to help the veteran.

  98. Billie r padgett April 4, 2024 at 10:19

Fayetteville Arkansas is so far behind on processing travel claims. They told me they actually had a year to process but it never takes that long. I currently have two travel claims that are like twenty days old. I was told I could follow up after 30 days. I think they need some help.

  99. Clifford Templeman April 4, 2024 at 10:17

I as a cancer patient am at the VA quite often and talk to other vets, on of the biggest complaints is travel pay, recently while sitting and waiting at the travel office,
I am 77 , one of the other waiting was a Korean vet,the third was WW2( in his 90s these vets including my self didn’t grow up and understand computer, I have tried to use this to get travel payments, after giving up and trying to flow length of tec.directions, including the beginning of this article I feel stupid! Stop having 20 year old that make up these programs,

  100. brian wilson April 4, 2024 at 10:16

bunch of BS sometimes. I was told to report to a VA facility for initial therapy 120 mile away, went got reimbersed for 1/5th the milage. Travel Pay informed me I could have been treated closer, so that’s what I was paid. Why didn’t they schedule or inform me about same before I made the trip. Surgeons and Physical Therapy scheduled the appt. and I listened and followed through and got screwed!!!!

  101. Robert Frost April 4, 2024 at 10:10

Make your web pages with ACTIONABLE and DIRECT LINKS to the stated item of interest. Most VA web pages and website only have circular links that bring you to a different page then to a second or third page which then links you back to the original web page where NONE OF THE PAGES provide ACTIONABLE links to actually perform the desired process. Essentially The VA website always talks about what resources are supposedly available but RARELY provides an actual way to get such resources. Just cut the crap and give us a direct way to get the services that we so desperately need!

  102. Gerald W Wagenaar April 4, 2024 at 10:09

I’ve been trying to get an appointment with the Sioux Falls VA for a hearing test. Thank you.

  103. David Griffith April 4, 2024 at 09:51

I have had trouble with the electronic method of filing a travel claim since it started. I think it’s a terrible system that is in NO way user friendly. I have lost a couple years of travel pay because of it and it really bugs me. They should allow the old tried and proven method so that MANY vets are not excluded.

  104. Talmadge Foreman April 4, 2024 at 09:22

The system doesn’t reimburse the veteran for there travel in a timely manner when it takes more than one week to reimburse the Vet it’s not severing in a timely manner.

  105. Charles Tow April 4, 2024 at 09:18

In 2021 made several required trips for dental care with CCN approval. Was paid mileage for only one, the other 4 or 5 were denied. Was never advised until this year when another CCN approved Doctor appointment mileage was denied, that I needed to get “note from doctor showing proof that visit was completed”. Funny that Optum paid for visit, but I need to provide proof showing I attended appointment! Would have been nice to have this information earlier so I could have been paid mileage for approved visits rather than a denial with no explanation that note required..

    • Cora Honaker April 4, 2024 at 11:31

Same here. The VA failed to give all the needed information. Optum paid for the visit but I could not get the travel pay because I DIDNT HAVE PROOF OF VISIT. Funny, the VA filled prescriptions from this Dr visit.

      • Mr. Khan April 6, 2024 at 17:31

Optum is no longer Optum it’s LHI.

  106. Albert Ruscito April 4, 2024 at 09:15

I’m just reviewing the benefits on travel and in the above information it states that I can file either online or at the VA facility that I received service by using a form! I receive most of my medical care at the Northport VA facility located in Northport New York. At that facility I have been told by the head of the department of travel reimbursement that they are no longer excepting or using the written form!. Please clarify what is the policy. Because as a veteran I find it very difficult to electronically file my travel benefits. In the past year I have lost reimbursements because of problems within your system! And I was told that because it was over 30 days I couldn’t file my claims. I had also gone to the patient advocate about the situation and was told that there was nothing they could do either. It was not was it in my control that the system was not accepting or processing the electronic claims. It was the system not me, not fair , not responsive to the veterans need. Thank you for listening respectfully Vietnam veteran

  107. Bill April 4, 2024 at 09:14

The reimbursement system is not as it appears. I have been to Community Care and filed as instructed and never received payment. When I inquired, I was told that a travel clerk had denied the payment period. No further explanation was given.
The VA employs many great wonderful people but there are some who are only there for the 20 year pension. Dead wood.

  108. Louis Rodriguez Ruiz April 4, 2024 at 09:06

I had to cancel because the travel agent fare they are never on time paying off and my appointment was always more than 30days and the mileage is not even enough just to get there at the VA Uber is so. Expensive it’s not even close to pay them

  109. charles english April 4, 2024 at 08:58

I am a disabled veteran. Veteran are their own worst enemies. They won’t ask for help, or won’t take the time to find out the answers to hard questions, ( like Travel reimbursement.) Start with finding an advocate at any VA facility. An advocate will advise and direct you to every service available to you. Don’t give up. You have Rights. An Avocate is your answer to everything.

  110. Kenneth Rushing April 4, 2024 at 08:48

I have use the Btsss.gov travel site for a few years, it is fast and efficient in most cases. Recently I filed a clam at the end of February but by the middle of March the claim had not been paid. I called the VA travel office and was told that they were still working on claims from January. He said he would review my claim a few days later my claim was paid . If something goes wrong and my claim needed to be resubmitted than I would not have time to resubmit the claim if the VA is back logged more than 30 days. The Veteran loses benefits. This is not a fair arrangement for the veteran.

  111. Tony J Gerling April 4, 2024 at 08:32

Why does it take so long to get reimbursed for travel when at one time you could get reimbursed the same day?

  112. Tom Anderson April 4, 2024 at 08:30

Every mileage reimbursement done through BTSSS has money subtracted from the approved amount, with no explanation!

For example, after entering the appointment information in the system, it comes up with mileage and then approves a dollar amount for travel reimbursement. But when paid to my account, the money is less than approved mount, by usually $6. For the VA clinic I most often go to, BTSSS approves $17 for travel, but the amount paid is only $11. No explanation for the about 30% subtraction???

    • Amber Koeller April 5, 2024 at 05:47

Before we can pay you back for expenses, you must pay a deductible.

The current deductible is $3 one-way or $6 round-trip for each appointment, up to $18 total each month. After you pay $18 within 1 month, we’ll pay the full cost of your approved travel for the rest of that month.

We charge this deductible because we’re required by law to withhold certain amounts from travel reimbursement payments. The money we withhold helps to pay for travel or medical care for other Veterans.

In some cases, we may waive this deductible.

  113. Greg engler April 4, 2024 at 08:23

There is a new system where you text 53079 and then check in. This is supposed to locate your scheduled appointments where you then can. Do something else and you are supposed to have applied for reimbursement,
.there are flyers at Some check in windows touting the new thing with info on how you do this. Unfortunately it always tells me it can find no appointments for me so I can’t tell you what happens next. This system obviously isn’t ready for use. There has been no training on its use as well and comes as a surprise to travelers. I give it an f for every thing except for concept. There is no info o help you find who to contact so your appointments are recognized. Good idea but total failure to get system to work.

  114. James April 4, 2024 at 07:51

The VA will do everything it possibly can to shortchange you on this. They are unhelpful and the travel department will do everything they can to make sure that you do not get paid because that is their job. They do everything they can to screw the veteran to save money for themselves. I’ve been fighting with them to get my travel pay for years, they draw things out so that way it falls within the preview of them not having to pay you. I find it interesting that even my doctor writing them a letter telling them I have to come down to a facility which cost me $70 to get to in back they don’t care. For some reason they also can’t keep my travel pay on Wilmington. Somehow my travel ends up going to California and everywhere else so I can’t actually decide the hospital I go to the VA is improved in someways, but it’s only gotten worse the other way, the computer system they have for travel pay is even worse. I’ve never met anyone from travel pay units that I’ve been worth their salted ever. This is probably one of the worst departments in the VA hands-down.

  115. Grampy Tom April 4, 2024 at 07:26

I get postcards and multiple texts reminding ne of appointments. Why can’t that same system reimburse for the appointment that I completed. It knows that it was completed! It has my address and banking info. Instead I have to try to work through one of the most clumsy systems that doesn’t always work. And….Why were years of emails on healthevet between the doctors, nurses and I deleted in the start of 2024? IT needs some adult supervision.

  116. BILL BUFORD April 4, 2024 at 07:23

I gave up trying to get travel pay when they changed to the online system. It never worked .

  117. Mike April 4, 2024 at 07:12

I’m sure it works if you complete the process perfectly, if not….. you’ll probably be skipped over.

  118. walter champagne April 4, 2024 at 07:12

I am an 80% disabled Vet for hearing loss. I have been waiting a year to get my travel pay. I traveled from Phenix city Al to Tuskegee al. I Have submitted claims and called veteran advocates a lot of times with no results.

  119. Lawrence Fleming April 4, 2024 at 06:36

    Sounds good. I’m interested.

  120. Jeffrey Blevins April 4, 2024 at 06:34

Yeah, we can get travel reimbursement, if you want to wait 3 – 4 months to get it back. Finance gets the form after travel, and it’s taking minimum 3 months o get it. VA needs to go back to paying cash on day of visit, as it cuts out all the Red tape and wait times. It’s ridiculous.

  121. Charles Ashby sr. April 4, 2024 at 05:54

I have not received travel reimbursement in almost 2 years all I get from them is excuses. I even went to patient rep and still got no answer. They owe me about $200.00

  122. Randy E Logsdon April 4, 2024 at 05:51

I must have missed it or this travel reimbursement is just a joke. You seriously need to rewrite this article.

I help you. Manila VA in the Philippines. I’m 100%, but no travel pay, food reimbursements, or lodging aloud.

VA, you should be ashamed of your misleading statements.

  123. Jody O April 4, 2024 at 05:41

It is not easy, I’m pretty good at working the computer and navigating websites. This system to file your claim when you get home is very difficult to navigate. I have even given up. I can’t imagine a WWII or Korea War vet trying to file at home and on line.

I think the VA should go back to the Kiosk. It was so easy, put your ID in the scanner, check a few boxes, sign your name and within 10 business days your money would be in your bank account.

  124. David April 4, 2024 at 05:11

Got my travel for almost 1.5 years. Then WHAM, as I am under 30%, and the travel is for my heart, my liver, my skin, my joints, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes but not for what my service related condition. Then no more. Funny they will deny me the 3-500 a year in travel. But do not blink at the 2-300,000 they pay for hospital stays.

  125. Lloyd Omps April 4, 2024 at 02:43

This is a disgracefully broken system which stiffed my husband $80.00 (a lot of money for us) for a trip to a mandated VA clinic 90 minutes (3 hours rount trip) from our home. After asking numerous personnel at the clinic (during COVID) and we filled out paper claims. When looking for guidance we were then told we should use the portal. There was never any information given to us about any 30 day expiration to claim, so we missed the 30 day cutoff through no fault of our own. Add to this the fact that there I could NOT NEVER ACCESS the the BTSSS due to its highly unfriendly and arcane portal. Add to this the outrage that VA refused to pay our legitimate claim because ‘they lost our paper form’ and then the final outrage (even after trying to sort it out IN WRITING Iwith the higher ups in the Baltimore, MD VA system) who just said “We Can’t Pay Your Claim” EVEN AFTER ACKNOWLEDGING that YES, my husband checked in and out of this appointment: after ALL THIS his travel claim was flatly denied because it missed the 30 day window!!!! This is the SAME VA which pays bogus claims in the millions of dollars to inside crooks who KNOW HOW to bilk the VA for fake claims. The VA is very good at stealing from deserving veterans and diverting their funds to fake players. This article above is nothing but a CYA due to an arcane and hopelessly labyrinthine system which does NOTHING for the deserving Vietnam Vet seeking to be reimbursed for travel but certainly serves the VA itself – nothing more. The VA exists to support ITSELF and their smarmy ‘Thank You for Your Service” could not be more duplicitous. They have acted despicably as far as my husband (Veteran of 22 years) and have picked my husband’s pocket in this way! PS – the fact that these comments are only date from 1 April 24 are suspicious for the many Veterans who are/continue to be disenfranchised by the shoddy, hostile and bloated/non-functioning system in place.

Ha Ha Ha Ha……what a joke! I quit trying. File a claim…..watch it get denied! A great way for the VA to save money. A high-tech “Paper Chase” Even if it gets approved, after the co-pay is deducted, a $6.66 reimbursement becomes $ .66. Who wants to work for $.66 an hour?

  127. Tim mccullough April 4, 2024 at 02:11

I have given up in frustration. Talked to Patient Advocate…they have same problems. System unreliable and difficult to use. It’s great for VA! Saves them money! If you have a dispute, file a claim….wait a year!

  128. Terra Johnson April 4, 2024 at 02:04

I have received travel pay after submitted for reimbursement before so I know it can work, but it doesn’t seem to work anymore. As of now- April 2024 I am still waiting for travel pay reimbursement from appointments I had in April 2023 and June 2023. Any time I try to follow up on it I am given the same answer that they are behind in processing claims due to lack of staff. In April 2023 they said they were 4-5 months behind. No idea what has happened since then. It appears they have not caught up. Or just as likely my stuff fell through the cracks because that is a common occurence at the VA. Super frustrating.

  129. Mr. Khan April 4, 2024 at 02:00

I made all exams, it was a depressing time in my life. I received mail after receiving travel rembusment, that I was not going to receive travel rembusment. I received travel rembusment dispite the letter.

  130. Harold Gribble April 4, 2024 at 01:38

Concerning travel pay.. I haven’t received any travel pay for my last 6 trips to the VA. I’ve been told, the VA is months behind, and short of employees..the government should take care of vets instead of sending money elsewhere

  131. Andonios Neroulias April 4, 2024 at 01:27

Excellent information and need to know

  132. Michael Waite April 4, 2024 at 01:02

Travel pay takes months to get reimbursed. Using BTSSS IS Slow. Mailing in your travel voucher is costly. In all the travel pay clerks decide if you are eligible. The system is terrible. I’m surprised the IG hasn’t investigated the entire travel pay procedure.

  133. Ronald Akiyama April 4, 2024 at 01:00

Why wasn’t the $18,00 deducted per month disclosed for veterans’s travel pay….$6.00 deducted for 1st appointment…$6.00 deducted for 2nd appointment…$6.00 deducted for 3rd appointment..if a 4th appointment or more within the same month, full travel pay would be awarded..round trip miles x cost per mile. It’s pretty sad when the VA has to nickel and dime the veterans and provide more of our tax dollars to the millions of undocumented migrants for travel, food, lodging, medical, charge card, cell phones and education while our veterans are treated unfairly by not awarding the full travel pay for every scheduled appointment. Either pay the full travel pay for every scheduled veteran’s appointment and do away with the nickel and dime ($6.00 deduction) from our veterans travel pay.

  134. Winston April 4, 2024 at 00:55

i am a cold Wr Vet. With the income I get, I/ve been told I was eligible for travel. But it seems the VA Hospital travel is 2 yrs behind in paying their travel pay. I’ve been battling them for 2-3 yrs now. So aggravating. I was at Memphis is behind 2 yrs paying travel. I had my primary care dr assign me to physical theraphy, but had to quit because of my limited income. I was actually told by travel, one Vet was owed 150 checks, but not been paid yet. Just a warning to other vets that this scenario is ongoing with me. Was even denied a 2922 travel pay because it was old submission. what I’m experiencing with this travel pay.l BTW I’m 70 yrs old. I’m utilizing the community care program, thru the VA.

    I

  135. William P Roe April 4, 2024 at 00:28

Dear VA. If the records of our disability are on your database, and we are signed-in at the appointment, why is this not done automatically via a computer program to reduce manpower use and streamline our payments?

  136. Thad Spear April 4, 2024 at 00:24

How come it takes 4 to 6 weeks to get the travel pay. With the price of fuel it puts some of us in a bit of bind.

  137. Steven Tryon April 4, 2024 at 00:07

Why don’t VA pay for rental cars, one taxi trip is about the same as a rental car, three taxi trips well excede a rental car wasting VA funds.

  138. Donald Luke April 4, 2024 at 00:04

There have been new articles about the part of the VA that processes the travel claims is understaffed and overworked. Instead of the 3-5 day processing time promised in the information about travel claims, my personal travel claims were waiting to be processed two months late. Only after I called a patient advocate did I get a call promising my claims would be taken care of. That’s fine for me but what about the hundreds of thousands of veterans who are not as adept on computers as I am, can’t check to see if the travel claim they submitted is being worked on. Now I am watching two more claims sit idle two weeks after submitting them online.

IS TRAVEL REINBERSMENT ,,OPEN FOR VETERIANS LIVING IN PHILIPPINES ??

    • Kenneth W. Shaw April 5, 2024 at 08:26

I HAVE READ, NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT (TRAVEL PAY REIMBURSEMENT)……I TOO AGREE, THAT THE (**VETERANS ADMINISTRATION**), NEEDS TO ADDRESS THESE CONCERNS IMMEDIATELY……HERE ARE SOME OF THE COMMENTS, I HAVE HEARD FROM: (TRAVEL PAY CLERKS): “BECAUSE OF COVID”—WE ARE IN A TWO YEAR BACK LOG, “WE—THE (TRAVEL PAY DEPARTMENT)”—NEED VERIFICATION OF YOUR DOCTOR VISIT ATTENDANCE, “VA STATES”—THERE IS A CLOSER PROVIDER,…….(“”NOW HERE IS THE NEWEST REASON””)—(“TRAVEL PAY CLERK”) STATED—JUST THE OTHER DAY (4-4-2024), THAT THE (****NATIONAL VA****), “””WILL BE RENDERING”””ALL TRAVEL PAY SUBMITTED CLAIMS FOR REIMBURSEMENT………… NOW THINK ABOUT THIS STATEMENT, THE VA LOCATION, IS GIVEN A YEARLY ALLOTTED OPERATING BUDGET. NOW THE VA LOCATION, BY ORDER OF THE SENIOR OPERATIONS DOCTOR~~SAYS TO EACH DEPARTMENT HEAD BOSS, WHAT COST CAN BE CUT FROM THE BUDGET, WILL BE RETURNED TO THAT DEPARTMENT HEAD BOSS AS A MONETARY BONUS…….NOW ADDRESSING TRAVEL PAY TO A VETERAN, THE ANSWER IS YES, IN REFERENCE OF OR BY TWO REASONS……(FIRST), VA GIVES YOU A SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT, FOR (C&P) EXAM………(SECONDLY) YOUR DISABILITY PERCENTAGE RATING, YOU MUST HAVE ACCORDING TO YOUR COMPENSATION AWARD, DEPENDENT UPON YOUR PERCENTAGE RATING, YOU MORE THAN LIKELY (**WILL NOT GET**) REIMBURSEMENT PAY FOR TRAVEL……..ALSO THINK ABOUT THIS: (**VA STATED STATEMENT**), THE PERCENTAGE RATING NUMBER LIKE 50%, WILL OVERRIDE LOWER PERCENTAGE RATINGS, AS TO WHO GETS CARE FIRST………ONE MORE THING TO THINK ABOUT: I HEARD BY PHONE CONVERSATION YESTERDAY (4-4-2024), A STATEMENT MADE BY: AN (ACCREDITED STATE SERVICE OFFICER), FACT CHECK THIS FOR YOURSELF IF YOU LIKE, THAT THE (** VA **) (“”WILL WAIT FOR NEW RULE CHANGES””)TAKING PLACE IN MID MAY 2024, BEFORE GIVING OUT RATING PERCENTAGES…….IN CONCLUSION, I HAVE BEEN READING A LOT OF OFFICIAL WEBSITES ABOUT THE (“” VA “”) AND WHAT IS COMING DOWN THE PIPELINES, SORT OF SPEAKING OF PIPELINE AND THE CUTTING OF VETERANS BENEFITS……JUST A FEW YEARS BACK, THE (** VFW **) BEING IN FRONT OF CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS, MADE THIS (COMMENT or STATEMENT): (“”CUTTING VETERANS “BENEFITS or FUNDING”), SHOULD NOT BE A BURDEN TO A VETERAN, NOR CARRIED ON THE BACK OF A VETERAN, BUT RATHER YET, VFW SPEAKING TO THE CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS, SAID CONGRESS NEEDS TO ACT, UPON BENEFITING BETTER DECISIONS FOR VETERANS…….

  140. Randy Shierman April 3, 2024 at 23:56

We used to do this on the computers when we checked into an appointment. Ever since the Hunan Virus, the VA quit this very easy filing.
This used to be easy. It sounds more complicated now and many more deserving Veterans will not receive this Benefit. All of my VA health benefits the last two years have been no travel expense s paid. What about all of those back expensess?
    Were did that compensation go?

  141. MICHAEL KAYLOR April 3, 2024 at 23:55

Unless of course it is the return of equipment for an at home sleep study because that wasn’t covered and neither would have been the third appointment to return to sign the paperwork to verify the second but the fourth to verify the third!

  142. Maria April 3, 2024 at 23:54

Not every appointment is available when you need it at the Temple VA, which is where my “base VA” is, or however it is categorized.
To have to wait 3 weeks or more for an appointment at the busiest VA around and not get fully compensated for traveling to the next closest and available VA location, should be against the law. Everything has gone up and that includes gas. Why are we being denied full compensation because the services needed are not available at your “base VA”?
It’s just ridiculous especially when there are other VAs around.

  143. joe gifford April 3, 2024 at 23:53

completely useless. never had a problem using machines in various departments. I’ve stopped trying a long time ago. System is far too complicated for reimbursement.

  144. Wade Harris April 3, 2024 at 23:52

Local VA at harry s truman vamc, Columbia MO will not accept in person paper claims nor are they consistently assisting at the online machines. They have refused or purposely errored in mail in claims! Go back to the paper claim requirement before you all get a class action law suit filed against you for harm done to veterans mentally and physically.

  145. Nereyda Canrera April 3, 2024 at 23:47

I would like to know who to talk to, aside from the travel department at VA Manila/ Jennifer Moreno.

I was recently informed my husband’s transport to his appts- he has several mental health issues coupled with dialysis treatment, etc, that his transportation was being denied because he can transfer from his scooter/wheelchair to a chair on the transport van. In addition to that I was informed that because of an accounting “glitch”, more like someone want doing their job, we were going to be issued a bill for transportion trips I took my husband to because his transportation was denied the first time a few years back.

I find this egregious, to say the least. Charles in transportation need Tonga e retraining doing for sensitivity, customer service, and how to adequately provide better service members, caregivers, and patients.

The Va makes you fight for EVERYTHING!! Why?! This was earned it’s not being given away freely. Ever since my husband was medically released in 2006 I have had to fight for EVERYTHING!! This is not the American way nor is this right!

  146. George Dickerson April 3, 2024 at 23:36

I’ve put in for travel in Oct and November 2023 for a total of 4 claims and and havnt received reimbursement as of this date 4/2/2024 am I going to get payment for this

  147. Stephanie King April 3, 2024 at 23:35

I’ve put travel claims last year and this year and I haven’t received anything. Not even a notification. My husband too! VA you guys need to do better.

  148. Hector Lopez April 3, 2024 at 23:35

I filled form for all of my appointments and since after September of 2023 I have not received compensation for travel. The only response is that they’re backed up.

  149. William Dennis Meyers April 3, 2024 at 23:32

if only it was that easy,. i never get paid for travel to any community care providers even though i keep all receipts, mileage, file the claim on time, even go so far as to include a copy of the referral / authorization letter, and the newest form of indignity, to have to ask the reception people for a letter stating that i had an appt on whatever date and that i kept said appt. it then has to be signed by the off mgr or dr. i have to do the above to justify my governments expenditure of some $7. to be honest with you i no longer care about comm care travel reimbursement. its not worth the time and trouble to file a claim and repeatedly have them denied.
your article doesnt mention that in order for me to get my full reimbursement for any appts, i have to have had 3 or more va appts in the month. otherwise the travel money is reduced by 50%. its a great way to treat a 100% service connected, 100% diabled viet nam vet. keep your travel money

  150. Joseph Rochin April 3, 2024 at 23:09

Why the travel pay not eligible for veterans who qualify under VA criteria, for veterans living in the Philippines and traveling to the VA clinic in Manilla?

  151. Jess Stovall April 3, 2024 at 22:59

If I am required to file within 30 days of travel or you deny my claim, what is my recourse if after 30 days since my submission I have not been paid. Fair is fair.

  152. Misa April 3, 2024 at 22:43

Why is this information JUST being told?
I live in an rural area ALL of my appointments require at least a hour of travel one way and I have NEVER been told that I can be reimbursed for my travel to community care appointments. >:[ It’s even worse because I don’t think I can be reimbursed for these appointments because they are more than 6 month old appointments.
Please do better VA about crucial information like this.

  153. Mark April 3, 2024 at 22:41

On April 1, 2024, when I got to the place of my appointment, I received a text letting me know that I am at the place of my appointment (I use the VA app for checking my appointments and receive Secure Messaging on MyHealtheVet). I then received a text allowing me to claim my travel. I filled it out and received my travel 2 days later. I guess another way to file for travel.

  154. Bruce Edwards April 3, 2024 at 22:41

My name is Bruce Edward Edwards from Massachusetts, I’ve been waiting for my travel pay for over SIX MONTHS.

  155. Jean April 3, 2024 at 22:39

Reading the comments below, it sounds like some folks are quite unpleased.
My SO is going for an appointment, and was told the mileage would be paid.
I don’t know if they said HOW it would be paid. So, all of this is good to know.
And – thanks, John Thompson, because we will check out those links you left. They could be helpful.

  156. William O'Quin April 3, 2024 at 22:30

Been to Phila. VA hospital around 12 times in past 2 years for cancer treatments. Have only seen maybe 2 deposits in my bank account for travel. Gave them the completed forms at the appropriate front desk. When i inquired about it got the run around.

  157. ERNEST W FRANKLIN April 3, 2024 at 22:26

it,s very hard to used btsss

  158. Moses T Ruiz April 3, 2024 at 22:22

This article did not mention the Beneficiary Travel Office policy is to only reimburse from the closes VA facility regardless of where the Veteran actually received the treatment.

  159. J Young April 3, 2024 at 22:22

this program is insulting. Its not worth the frustration with the pragmatic website and the $$ amounts alotted for long or short distances just dont it worth Veterans time. You better off writing it off on your taxes. The Kioscs were a step in the right dirextion but of course that went away.

  160. Moses T. Ruiz April 3, 2024 at 22:22

This article did not mention the Beneficiary Travel Office policy is to only reimburse from the closes VA facility regardless of where the Veteran actually received the treatment.

  161. Nick O April 3, 2024 at 22:19

I can not imagine how much money the VA had saved at the expense of the veteran since taking away the self service kiosk to claim travel when at appointments. I personally know that I have literally lost out on thousands. Shame on you VA. Covid might be the reason you got rid of the kiosk, but the millions you are saving on payments is the reason you will not bring them back. Which by the way, we still use a kiosk every time we check into the pharmacy. I guess Covid isn’t a danger there

  162. Francis Whitty April 3, 2024 at 22:18

The travel reimbursement system if not working, nor has it been. The money grab you made when your arbitrary deadling ran out without giving any support is a disgrace. The secretary may really car, but the VA systems designers and operators have stolen veterans’ rightful money for travel. Most aren’t computer savvy, due to age, which makes it worse.

  163. William Allen Rush April 3, 2024 at 22:16

Nice idea except your BTSSS system does not work correctly. Still won’t let me put in my bank payment information in to complete the transaction.

  164. Chris Loll April 3, 2024 at 22:08

Would have been nice 4 years ago, haven’t been able to claim travel that long,

  165. Robin Triplett April 3, 2024 at 22:01

I must be an exception because I don’t recall ever not getting my reimbursement. It usually shows up in my account within two weeks. I often file it electronically while checking in on the app when I arrive at the VAMC. Sometimes I have to file at the hospital or clinic, but I still receive it within a few weeks.

  166. John Sarnow April 3, 2024 at 21:58

I am much appreciative for the mileage reimbursement opportunity. It is extremely unfortunate, however, that the VA computer programmers made applying for mileage just about an impossibility. It is totally nonsensical.

  167. WALTER Kennith VANN April 3, 2024 at 21:44

I have not receive payment for travel in the last six months,,,, When I ask about travel pay I am told it is taking six months or more and would like to know the reason.

  168. Bruce R. Miller April 3, 2024 at 21:40

I am 80% service connected with 20% UA. I files for travel reimbursement months ago and never heard anything, nor did I get a direct deposit. VA needs to go back to the liosk where it was easier to file for travel.

  169. Robert Payne April 3, 2024 at 21:29

This claim process could be made very easy and simple if the veteran could answer a couple more questions while at the kiosk or attendant person station at check in. Please consider this addition to the check in system.

  170. Guy Richard Judd April 3, 2024 at 21:25

My primary Doctor is at the Salt Lake George Wallin Hospital in the Blue clinic . Of which I am very please. In between SLH is a VA clinic. That clinic missed two problem which SLH caught right a way. I was told that I could only see the Doctor for one problem at a time . They wrote incorrect on the nurse notes . They passed the buck and at the would not correct the notes. I was afraid future doctors would rely on what was written and wouldn’t believe me when I tried to correct them to the future . Prior to going to Orem I was seen at the Blue Clinic for several years . At one time it took two years to be seen at the Orem Clinic. Bottom line I wanted to go back where I was confident on my diagnosis.
When I went to my schedule appointment in the Blue Clinic I was not reinversed because they said Orem was closer . Since I was going to the blue clinic Orem would not see me. If I able to see the doctor of my choice I can’t comprehend the confecting V A policy

  171. Gregory LaRue April 3, 2024 at 21:23

Travel reimbursement is bullsht, as you take a portion to pay from needy veterans to pay for support YOU are supposed to be supplying.

  172. Guy Cashman April 3, 2024 at 21:22

It should be noted that appointments to VA contracted community care providers are also eligible for travel (claim) expenses with one very important caveat. Patients must submit (attached to their claim) some form of proof or verification from the provider that they were physically there. A simple statement on the provider’s letterhead will suffice.

  173. Tom April 3, 2024 at 21:14

Most complicated setup I’ve ever encountered.
Also my monthly mileage from point A to point B randomly is less than the shortest possible route. There is a bug in how it calculates that mileage.
The more people I talk to the more confused I am.
Been trying to straighten out this glitch since Dec 2023.

  174. Alvin Stephens April 3, 2024 at 21:04

The online Travel pay site is outstanding if it works! The Map that determines your mileage has NEVER worked, thereby you can not file a claim.

  175. Maurice Fugitt April 3, 2024 at 20:55

Don’t waste your time, they never paid for my scheduled exam or appointments and I am 100% service connected. This is a joke.

  176. gerd Scheller April 3, 2024 at 20:47

I have almost 10 Travel Claims filed since December but they aren’t getting paid. The travel office says because they aren’t hiring more people. So thanks for nothing!

  177. Alfred Clark April 3, 2024 at 20:46

It took me over a year to get reimbursed for 3 travel vouchers. When I complained, I was told that they didn’t have the staff to handle the new system. Subsequent vouchers we handled within a week (like they did 2 years ago).

  178. Steven D. Hartman April 3, 2024 at 20:44

I think VA travel pay hoops that one has to jump through are a crock. It is desinged to create stree and frustration amongst us. Having to go to the Internet and jump all of these hoops is asinine! Takes three or four times longer than before, especially when the VA helper is busy! You had perfectly good machines at the clinics, where all you had to do was stick your card in, answer a couple of questions and BOOM! The money was sent to your checking account. But NO-O! That’s too easy for us vets. So you make it harder.
I, personally, haven’t filed for travel since June 2 of 2022. Of course, this confession might just fill you with glee, at the thousand bucks, or so, you saved from having to pay me. I hope the VA chokes on that money! You pissed me off!
You have a record of all of our appointments – including community care. All you should have to ask is: Did you come from your home address? AND, did you travel privately? That’s it, unless you had additional expenses. Save all of us poor, stressed war vets from all of your crap. Put the damn machines back!

    • Catharine April 4, 2024 at 22:33

I think that the only way we will ever be able to get our travel claim money will be through a Class Action lawsuit someday. Since they took away the machines and people to put through the paperwork, they must be saving a fortune on not paying us travel money. Someone is getting rich from this while we are prevented from getting this travel money. They owe you about $1000 and maybe me just as much and multiply that by all the veterans owed the same amount and you will get thousands of dollars that someone is keeping. Wonder if the person who designed the Smartphone app for this is getting a pay-off from this money?

  179. Darrell Andrews April 3, 2024 at 20:28

    It is not easy!
When they are 3 to 4 months behind! They lose paperwork or they didn’t receive the Doctors statements or they put the wrong Doctor to the wrong dates. I turned in all my paperwork and they say because they didn’t receive the Doctor’s paperwork, they close it out. They know they paid the bill and that is not good enough for them. One of the people in travel tried to help me with one that was 4 months old, it was denied because it was not filed in a timely manner and yet I had turned the paperwork a week after the appointment.

  180. Benjamin April 3, 2024 at 20:24

Ever since they took away the kiosks it’s been outrageously difficult to get travel pay. I can only imagine they did this because they knew the older generation would have a difficult time being able to get it and so they would save money. The BTTS system is complete garbage.

  181. Greg engler April 3, 2024 at 20:21

New system using text 53079 to check in can’t find my appointments. Give an F for operation but an A for concept

  182. David Brandenburg April 3, 2024 at 20:17

the new system does not work!, they are alienating most of us so that they can stop the half dozen people who was scamming the system!. they are like texas justice where they will hang and kill 100 innocent men before they will let one guilty man go!.

  183. Jimmie D Sedgwick April 3, 2024 at 20:16

I have not recieved travel pay for claims i put in in 2023. Is there a back up that far back

    • a vet April 4, 2024 at 16:56

you have to put in your paper work within 30 days. Otherwise they cheat you one more time ANOTHER WAYTHEY SCREW US OVER.

  184. Annie Fitch, HMC (ret) April 3, 2024 at 20:15

When you check in for your appt it should be autopay. BTSSS doesn’t always work, or you put in a claim and it doesn’t go through. And when you win an appeal VA should be responsible for paying 4 years of claims.

    • Lloyd Omps April 4, 2024 at 19:00

You have put forth the most sensible answer the VA debacle and many before you have also suggested this EASY fix. IG knows about this and Sec’y McDONOUGH KNOWS about this. Imagine all the money the VA hierarchy has piled up which should have been dispersed to deserving vets who must travel for care! There is a HUGE scam going on in VA where this money is waiting, hoping that we all DIE while waiting for our travel disbursement. The group in Baltimore is behind horrid. They pass the buck, do nothing while you wait for your DESERVED travel pay and then even when you go up the chain, they all collude to do NOTHING and then BLAME the VETERAN for not knowing some of their new exclusions (like the 30 day cutoff they enacted but NEVER TOLD ME!
Veterans are being disenfranchised in the millions and I ‘ll be in line when the class action is launched SOON. I wrote to McDonough and Biden and some nitwit in Baltimore called with ‘there’s nothing you can do’. This level of imbecility was beyond belief and there is CLEARLY a disencentive to keep funds from going to the veteran. The VA hopes you DIE before this is EVER sorted out. If you’ve got an inside scam, tho, VA will pay you six figures pronto. CROOKS as far as you can see – especially in Baltimore. The WORST

  185. David Brandenburg April 3, 2024 at 20:14

compared to the old system this one sucks, its over complicated on purpose so that it will scare normal veterans off and only the scammers have the balls to try it!. been paying for my own way even when I had to use my food money to do it. don’t expect me who can barely walk and stand to go to the bank, and set up another account so you can send my trip expense money. what pisses me off is how the government only wants the appearance of helping veterans and while not actually helping them!. hey uncle sam if your to cheap to pay the piper maybe you should not get up to dance!. start firing all of the deadbeats in congress,

  186. Marcus April 3, 2024 at 20:11

Not true, VA will only pay travel mileage to the nearest VA facility. I found that out after moving a few years ago. Because my new local VA facility was not accepting new veterans I had to travel over 1200 miles round trip to 4 different appointments, 1 every 3 months. I was paid 8 dollars per trip, no hotel, or meals were covered. I was paid mileage to the local VA facility only.

  187. Pat jahnke April 3, 2024 at 19:53

They for get to tell up they take $6.00 off ur travel if u have more than 6 visit in 1 month u will get it why they have not increased milage rate is been the same 4 yrs ago gas price has not went lower, they higher so it half true it take 3 week to get travel pay unless some found wrong longer

  188. Dewey odom April 3, 2024 at 19:53

I have filed for travel pay since last of 2023 at my local V. A. Athens Tn. Was told they’re behind, had to go to Chattanooga for imaging, clerk told me had to be direct deposit. Have I lost all I filed for? V. A. Never told me by mail, Email, nor clerks at local V. A. When I filed.

  189. Alex Ray Lackey April 3, 2024 at 19:45

I use to get my travel pay in cash immediately after my appointment. The VA lied to me/us and said when we set up a bank account and submit a travel form at the VA or on line we would be reimbursed in days. It has taken me months (check my log). I have also called the Nashville VA travel supervisors Heather Elliott & Christopher Dawson both at least 3 times and left voicemail messages in reference to travel location errors and they have NEVER called me back. I am ready to file a complaint at a higher level!

So, I have a 20% disability. Because I was in Vietnam, and I know Have Type 2 Diabetes. So, I see my doctor or her Nurse. Every 6 months does this mean I do get Travel Pay. Every time that I have an appointment as long as I fill out the Travel Voucher. Is this correct.

  192. Robin Triplett April 3, 2024 at 19:27

I must be an exception because I don’t recall ever not getting my reimbursement. It usually shows up in my account within two weeks. I often file it electronically while checking in on the app when I arrive at the VAMC. Sometimes I have to file at the hospital or clinic, but I still receive it within a few weeks.

  193. James Shomo April 3, 2024 at 19:26

I recommend doing your travel pay with a desktop or laptop. The website is not iPhone/Android friendly. I recommend you watch a video or tutorial about what information to input and when. I’ve been filing for 3 1/2 years every month and it can be hit or miss at best. Any small mistake will get denied. The phone system to talk to someone is almost non existent. BTSSS needs new coders and programmers unfortunately.

  194. Derek Utley April 3, 2024 at 19:23

BS!!!!! Travel pay is a freaking joke for us Veterans! I transferred to a better VA facility, and because there’s a closer one (the one I transferred from) I BARELY get half of the travel pay. I don’t even bother filing for it, it’s not worth the hassle OR my time anymore.

  195. DENNIS AGAN April 3, 2024 at 19:16

Travel reimbursement does not happen in 3 to 5 days. More like 15 to 17 days on average.

  196. james sweeney April 3, 2024 at 19:16

You have an income below the maximum annual VA pension rate. what is the income eligibility level

  197. Donald Trump April 3, 2024 at 19:15

All I can say is, based on my personal experience, is, DON’T BOTHER. It isn’t worth the time and effort for $25.

Change to a closer clinic instead, save yourself the aggravation.

  198. Richard Hockey Jr April 3, 2024 at 19:15

I live out side San Antonio and have to travel over 35 miles to some appointments. I am 60 percent service connected rated. I have been told I not qualify for travel pay. Everything I have read says anyone 30 percent or higher, qualifies. Why am I getting a runaround.

    • Nikki Sokol April 4, 2024 at 17:10

You get the runaround because VA wants to treat you like sht.

  199. Dawn ash April 3, 2024 at 19:15

If the VA wanted us to file for travel expenses they would make it easier to file. They have made it so complicated no one wants to fight with it

  200. Edward J Wetzel April 3, 2024 at 19:11

I do everything right but do not receive travel reimbursement

  201. Thaddeus Art Gilmore Sr. April 3, 2024 at 19:11

My last appointment was an hour away. I am going to look into this travel reimbursement program.

  202. Lacey Arnold April 3, 2024 at 19:07

BRING BACK THE KIOSK FOR TRAVEL PAY MY HEALTHY VET IS A JOKE AN APP WOULD BE BETTER. The government is a joke for taking care of us!

  203. Joseph LaBonte April 3, 2024 at 19:06

The online system does not work
For weeks, i have tried to file online. Go through all the steps. Then get an error.
Tried calling the number that pops up, permanent busy tone.
Tried emailing the email provided, never get a response or resolution.
System does NOT work. And you cannot get *any* help.

  204. Leroy Joseph Jr April 3, 2024 at 19:01

I called the Travel people and was told that i had to get my lodging, meals, Tolls and the meal for my wife/spouse that was to drive me to my Pre-Op appointment (03-02-2024) in Sugarland, TX (we live in Belton, TX – roughly 3.5 hours’ drive one-way).

Service-connected Lumbar Sugery was on March 5, 2024 – i was discharged from the Hospital on March 8, 2024 with my wife as my driver back home – – (we stayed in the hotel over that weekend as to not incur a lot of mileage expenses – approved by social worker)

We then spoke to a Social Worker (i won’t mention her name, that was very helpful with the instructions on what was needed from us)

I turned in all the paperwork with receipts in person to a travel representee in February – I also resubmitted the self-same paperwork in March via the online submission BTSSS.

I have not heard anything from anyone as of this comment.

    Frustrated Veteran,
    Leroy

  205. Neal April 3, 2024 at 19:01

The BTTS system could definitely use some work ..

  206. John Runfola April 3, 2024 at 19:00

This is the single most jacked up Socialist/Communist display of VA cruelty from the Benefits Admin. You have it or want it and we grab it and keep it hidden from your purview. Oh but wait it gets better. We always stand by Title 38.70. BS. If I submit a valid it’s as if I am trying to get your money, from your pocket, to help me with gas money all of $20.00 which omg it will break the camels back if I am approved for $20. Liars, cheaters and thieves. 150 years ago that alone could get one strung up and hung from a tree on the prairie.

  207. Larry Charles Rowe April 3, 2024 at 18:56

I am a 90% disabled Veteran. Whats said here is not correct. It takes me over 3 months after I submit my claim for travel pay. I am owed over $600. Travel pay when I call Travel reimbursement in Gainesville, Fl they say they have a backlog. I not only one other Veterans I talk to at VFW and America Legion have same problem. Gainesville says their understaffed but training new employees. Us Veterans deserve better. Couple years ago was receiving travel reimbursement in 2 to 3 weeks. Telling Veterans how easy it is to get travel pay is wrong at least in this area need to let them know takes 3 months or more. As a veteran of Vietnam War with Agent Orange I don’t even call Gainesville about this anymore as but what they tell me. Is miss representing or lies .

  208. Richard Kier April 3, 2024 at 18:52

It is a pain to put in for travel pay. Anything the VA can do to make it hard for vets to get paid.

  209. Caryn Gilliam April 3, 2024 at 18:49

Filing a travel claim is not at all easy especially for older, less tech savvy veterans. I wonder if that was the purpose in changing the way vets get travel pay. I suspect the government has seen a huge decrease in the amount they pay out in travel pay.

  210. Bill Otto April 3, 2024 at 18:47

The travel reimbursement program is far too complicated than it should be. Vets may have 2 appointments a year and jumping through hoops to submit a claim is simply unnecessary. And, my last 3 claims showed a reimbursement of $37.24 and I received a little over $31.00. There was never a problem when we used the kiosk system at administration facilities. So many complaints.

  211. Gerald Nelson April 3, 2024 at 18:42

The new travel pay program is so difficult that most veterans are not filing. Is that the propose of the new filing system. I am not computer illiterate but the system is not user friendly. Especially if you are claiming “ community care appointments”. I have had assistance several times and still have problems. I have lost hundreds of dollars and my veteran friends agree with me. Most have given up on trying. There is no way to give input and the advocate and travel pay personnel are frustrated and getting short with the veterans. It is the worst most difficult program I have ever experienced with the VA. Suggestion boxes have been removed and the staff says nothing can be done and refuse to pass on our disappointment and frustration. It needs reform and fixing. Totally unusable and inappropriate. Who will compensate the thousands of veterans for the millions of dollars lost so far. Again is this the intent? Make it so difficult that it can’t be used. We need some one to listen and change the travel pay program to something g useable and efficient.

  212. Francis J Piraino April 3, 2024 at 18:41

I use this travel program for years and it work fine. I receive my travel pay usually within a week. It is great that I get my travel pay back, make sure you follow the instructions.

  213. Ronald M Deaver April 3, 2024 at 18:35

YOU CANNOT FILE A REIMBURSEMENT AT THE TRAVEL SECTION AT CHARLIE NORWODD VETERANS MEDICAL CENTER UPTOWN OR DOWNTOWN, AUGUSTA, GA. THIS IS ERROEOUS INFORMATION!!

  214. W. McGowan April 3, 2024 at 18:30

What happened to Travel Pay at the Kiosk? We have no transparency of knowing if VA has paid the veteran other than comparing bank account entries without any reference to what date is being paid. The BTSS is difficult for older veterans if not impossible. With the same lack of date for which the Travel Pay was for. I lost hundreds during covid when the NEW BTSS was the only way to be reimbursed but VA didn’t tell the veterans. Hense the paper form wasn’t accepted until it was reinstated after BTSS flopped. Again, without telling the veterans. We get questionnaires non-stop but nothing on policy changes. The 2018 Mission Act/Community Care is a failure and have only gutted the great VA we had before. Everything is constantly changing without the veteran. Even TAP line is broken without notifying my provider last week. VA no care/don’t care.

  215. Thompson, Keith April 3, 2024 at 18:28

I submitted my travel to see a doctor outside of the VA through Community Care. I just received a letter denying my travel because they claim that there is no order in the VA system, but I have the VA letter showing that I had three days of treatment. The first day of my 45-mile one-way travel to the doctor’s office was paid, but not the next two visits. Then they tell me that I can appeal the decision. If I submitted the VA letter showing my dates for care, why didn’t satisfy the BTSSS reason for payment?

  216. stephen p thorne April 3, 2024 at 18:20

Thought you said would be easy to claim gas money-i don’t think so…Maybe have personel to check in with at apiontment-let them do all the “easy”stuff…

  217. Edward M Benitez April 3, 2024 at 18:20

I have been applying for travel pay for sometime now, and have not received any.

  218. Ronald Vulatic April 3, 2024 at 18:19

LATLEY INSTEAD OF GETTING PAID FOR MILEAGE TRAVELING TO LEBANON VA MEDICAL CENTER I AM BEING PAID FOR TRAVEL TO THE YORK CLINIC. WHICH IS LESS THEN I WAS GETTING. TRAVEL REINBURSEMENT IS USING A SYSTEM SHOWING DIFFERENT MILEAGE. WHAT LOOKS LIKE ON PAPER IS NOT THE SAME AS DRIVING TO THESE LOCATIONS.

  219. joel T seaton April 3, 2024 at 18:19

On March 4 I had an appointment at the Gainesville VA for an upper GI. I was in no mood to fill out the paperwork and my driver took me home. A couple of days later I tried to fill out the electronic travel endorsement but have not heard from anyone and no deposit. I usually do a paper form and find a box before I leave. Please let me know what I should do, fill out a paper form or wait. Thank you, Joel Seaton

  220. Douglass A Wells April 3, 2024 at 18:18

I never knew the 30 day rule and also I thought I was only covered by going to my VA appointments in Philadelphia! So a couple of weeks ago I tried to submit travel reimbursement for 6-7-8 prior appointments in the last year or so… I was denied!! I just NEVER knew the RULE!! Yokes

  221. Jeffrey L Slote April 3, 2024 at 18:13

As far as travel pay goes, I have experienced not receiving payments after submitting for travel pay. Also I have heard many veterans say that they do not receive payments after submitting vouchers. Also I am a Traveling Vet and it takes more than a normal turn around time to receive my travel expense reimbursements.

  222. Carl Noles April 3, 2024 at 18:12

I travel a little over 29 miles round trip to my nearest VA facility. According to my filing for reimbursement, I should be eligible for about $12.29 of travel pay. I only get reimbursed about $6.39 each time. That is not a lot of money but I would like to receive what I am entitled to. Am I doing something wrong or is this a problem on the VA site?

  223. Edwin Blum April 3, 2024 at 18:10

Why is the Northport facility doing away with VA form 10-3542 for travel reimbursement and require all us elderly veterans to use a computer that we are unfamiliar with??

  224. Arden Baker April 3, 2024 at 18:08

They don’t pay travel for required blood tests. I travel an hour one way and it isn’t covered. I’m sure happy that they do cover all of my other appointments. It’s hard to get my mileage when using community care appointments the outside care givers don’t keep up on the paperwork and when you find out it’s to late to get it.

  225. Jim April 3, 2024 at 18:06

-“If you don’t have direct deposit set up yet, you’ll need to complete a VA-FSC Vendor File Request Form (VA Form 10091)……You can fax your completed form to us at 512-460-5221 or bring it to your local beneficiary travel office.” – VA instructions

That is not true. You do not accept VA Form 10091 via fax at that number. If you fax to that number the VA system generates an email to the email you enter on the form that states the VA doesn’t accept that form vis fax since September 2023. Your info is outdated and many of your VA office people don’t even know it.

How can you have that IMPORTANT step so messed up????

    • Jim April 5, 2024 at 11:11

The #1 issue is that the VA staff has no clue what the VET sees on their dashboard. They have no clue what the Vet can do through that dashboard. They give outdated info if you call and ask them questions. You need to show them what the VET can do and what the Vet sees so they can better help the Vet. The VA youtube videos are all outdated and no longer apply. Your website instructions are even outdated and do not reflect how the system works today. You all need to get your sht together. You are an embarrassment to all of us proud Veterans!

      – Let the Vet have access to the entire claim history. I’m sure it’s still in the system. Why limit my access to the last 60
      days or whatever it is??
      – Claims for VA facility appointments are easy to file. The appointment is already listed and you just click a few options and submit.
      – Claims for non-VA facilities (community care appointments) you are required to enter appointment details before filing a claim. This requires choosing facility from drop down list. If your non-VA facility is not listed simply message you travel benefit office to get it added. It was a painless process for me.
      – The VA needs to add an option for the Vet to delete a claim that has not been submitted rather than letting it hang there incomplete. If you make an error to far into the claim process you cannot back out to redo and then you cannot delete the claim. Move on to file a new correct claim and teh old incorrect claim hangs there as incomplete.

  226. Maritza April 3, 2024 at 18:04

No it doesn’t its been a year..still waiting. I’m the only one working so it is a big expense when I have to go to Lake Nona. Toll snd gas at least 50.00

  227. Bob Barber April 3, 2024 at 18:01

The VA facility where I go has a REAL problem with travel pay reimbursements. They are, at best, 2 months behind. Some of the claims presented at specific appointments aren’t getting turned in. There needs to be some government intervention and investigation.

  228. Dennis White April 3, 2024 at 17:59

Filed for travel numerous times and received nothing

  229. Kate c Aguilar-Langella April 3, 2024 at 17:57

I have been filing my claims for my appointments and I noticed on my bank statements that I have received no reimbursement despite the claim online showing that it has been “paid”

  230. Christopher Blau April 3, 2024 at 17:56

But baypines VA computers kick you off.. it’s an ongoing thing in st petersburg FL.
I guess ukraine money laundering op is more important

  231. Kevin Schneider April 3, 2024 at 17:52

I have had to travel an hour each way to Orlando for several appointments and told travel is not authorized. When I traveled 10 minutes at previous residence in NC, I always was paid.

  232. Reginald Masten April 3, 2024 at 17:47

Not disabled, not retired. Ineligible because I make too much money or some other dis-qualifying scam. VA diagnosed me with bronchitis yet there’s no Pulmunologist in Montgomery. They sent me to Opelika…twice. Other choices were Alex city or Birmingham. Gave all permission for record access, got to Opelika and no access. After a 15 min consult, was told he’s too busy and make another appointment 2 months later. Go back to Opelika, at my expense, still no access but allowed to take Pulmonary function test. Get back to Montgomery and VA cannot access Pulmunologist’s records. Waste of time and I understand the anger vets have for this system.

  233. Keith Butcher April 2, 2024 at 23:24

    It is not easy.
I was told I would have to travel to each hospital to get my appointment list. Which you don’t get reimbursed for.
I had to go online and do something else and it was a government web site that I’ve tried before and can’t even get in.
All while you have stage 4 cancer, weak as a kitten and filling your barf bag.
Meanwhile they have all the information already in accounting.

    • Chris simeneau April 3, 2024 at 19:10

This is a total joke. The VA and White River Junction. Vermont is claiming to be 7 months behind. So how is this helpful to any benefits or to a veteran? When you don’t see your money for 7 months and you have 4 more appointments. In that 7 month peryou should go back to the way it was get paid at the paycage. Instead of just this garbage shut up, you have going, where nobody gets paid for 7 months. That’s a total joke.

    • Ronald Tucker April 3, 2024 at 20:22

When the kiosks are working and available it’s a nice provision but filing a claim by paper or online is a pain in the ass. Why not give providers a one click confirmation of the visit and process it from their acknowledgement.

    • Nereyda Canrera April 3, 2024 at 23:56

Do you mined me inquirying which state your VA is located in?

  234. Madeline Pearson April 2, 2024 at 15:13

My husband has filed for reimbursement for about 1 1/2 years and still has not seen any money. Everyone he asks about this say they are having trouble with all Veteran reimbursement and not enough employees to handle the back leg of claims.

    • w mcgowan April 3, 2024 at 18:37

30 days is the limit to file. And they don’t tell you if they messed up like they did with me. Using a congressman didn’t help because there is no transparency or accountability. The rules keep changing as they lay-off VA health care people. Thank the 2018 Mission Act. It’s VA no care/don’t care now.

    • Darin H April 3, 2024 at 19:51

I have filed for reimbursement online like they told me too. Then 6 to 8 months later; sorry we can’t determine you went to your appointment. I’m supposed to turn in private medical notes as proof the appt happened. How about looking at Triwest payments to the provider and see that I went. But instead let’s just cancel all of my travel pay for a year and a half and screw this veteran again. Cost savings on the backs of veterans some more! Go Spokane VA!!

    • John Lowrey April 4, 2024 at 07:57

Most of the time works Unless when you arrive your told your appointment was canceled. Told doctor had an incident on the parkway. It was raining hard, had to leave very early to get to appointment on.time. Learned I was lied to.
Dr was out of country and no one told me. Clerk admitted to me he told me what he was advised to say by his boss. They refused me travel and tolls. 2nd time this has happen. I was dealing with an infection for a long time after several surgeries and they had no one else who could see me. What happened to integrity?

    • Martin April 4, 2024 at 08:44

This system doesn’t work I filed payment claims on the btsss website several times I was told it would take 30 days for reimbursement didn’t receive the full amount my Lyft ride was 70$ they changed the payment requested to 25$ and only gave back to me 18$, that was one of many claims that left me with no money for the end of the month I had to cancel my phone plan and had to cancel my VA appointments, try to fix the issue the VA travel department on Hines VA hospital is really horrible try many times to fix the issue never was fixed and I just stopped seeking care.

  236. Gary Ray Manahan April 2, 2024 at 13:21

I been doing Tavel Milage for Years and the BTSS system doesn’t Work all the time !The claim are showing Incomplete

    • David Gardener April 3, 2024 at 22:06

Gary Ray Manahan… I don’t know if you will see this or not but I just learned that if it shows Incomplete, it means that I forgot to hit the Submit button. Or the Submit button didn’t work???

    • Larry Bumpers April 3, 2024 at 23:34

VA hospitals and doctors make the appointments at their chosen times and places. VA knows where we live. If the veteran arrives at the appointment at the appropriate time and place, and since VA uses pre established mileage measurements, why do veterans need to apply for travel pay at all? It should be paid automatically without any further input from the veteran.

    • Mr. Khan April 4, 2024 at 02:07

BTS3 system doesn’t always work, but it is a good resource because then COM-SEC has access and you will get rembusment. Different VAs have different polices and sometimes you have to go through the privet company for the rembusment. Some big companies have access and will “put there foot down,” if your a good person. They make sure and you never ever want to mess with big momma. They can not stop good from happening. Never give up, fight the good fight, be mentally strong.

I’ve been submitting the form for reimbursement the past 2 years during all appointments and still no reimbursements. I’ve asked about it many times and the answer is always a “Back Log”, I was also told that they won’t reimburse that far back.

    • Le Rhonda Walker April 4, 2024 at 03:42

I have been waiting for travel pay approx 6 months or more. I don’t understand why so long.

  238. James Cregger April 1, 2024 at 16:11

It’s sad but when I become VA Benefits Eligible it was unknown to me that I could receive travel reimbursement. The should be better dispersant of information such this.

    • Douglass A Wells April 3, 2024 at 18:22

I agree 200%!!! I never was aware of the 30 day rule. I thought it was only good when you went to a VA HOSPITAL FACILITY!! I would file that day but sometimes not receive the benefits for months!!!

    • Pat jahnke April 3, 2024 at 20:03

If you live .ore than 100 miles from ur va appointment they will put you up at a motel , travel office is a pain in thr ass they have swing doors no one stay to tell what wrong, hired veterans they don’t know why but show how fill out forms . Thier phone busy all the time , you have it come keep calling or see them when you go to appointment.

    • David Gardener April 3, 2024 at 22:09

James Cregger, same with me. I never knew about it either. I lived in my current location for 11 years before I found out. I went back and counted up all my appointments during that time and it came to over $4000 worth of mileage reimbursements that I missed out on.
