Barb Waters received a warm welcome as she arrived in Marysville June 9. Greeted by Columbus Center for Development and Civic Engagement staff and a host of local supporters, Waters’ visit marked a significant moment in her cross-country cycling journey to educate the public about VA services and to raise funds to support Veterans in need.
Her journey began in early May and will see her and 27 other riders traverse 3,296 miles across 14 states. The group started their ride by dipping their rear wheels in the Pacific Ocean at Manhattan Beach, California, on May 4th and they plan to complete it by dipping their front wheels in the Atlantic Ocean at Paul Revere Beach, Massachusetts, 43 days later.
Along the way, Waters aims to meet with as many Veterans, Veteran Service Organizations and community leaders as possible in over 44 cities and towns.
Waters, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, has a personal connection to the military: It “has been in my family for generations. I have seen first-hand the incredible honor of service yet continued struggles of men and women after discharge.”
“Because of the sacrifices of those who protect us.”
“We live an incredible life here in the United States, but only because of the sacrifices of those who protect us by their military service. Together, we can raise awareness and the necessary funds for a cause much bigger than ourselves or any bike ride,” she said.
The purpose of this monumental ride is to raise money for VA to ensure that Veterans receive the support they need after their service. Every penny raised during the journey will benefit Veterans seeking services at VA. Donations can be made online.
Traci Washington, chief of the Center for Development and Civic Engagement in Columbus, expressed gratitude for Waters’ efforts. “We are so grateful to Ms. Waters for choosing to support our local Veterans in this way. Many Veterans face emergent needs such as food insecurities, the need for temporary housing or transportation to medical appointments that cannot be met through other means. It is crucial to provide support for our Veterans, especially those struggling with conditions like PTSD or other mental health issues related to their military service. Through her dedication and fundraising efforts, Barb is making a difference in the lives of those who have sacrificed so much for our country.”
As Waters continues her journey across the United States, her efforts are expected to bring much-needed attention and resources to the challenges faced by Veterans. Her dedication to this cause serves as an inspiring reminder of the ongoing need to support those who have served.
You can make a donation or to begin your journey as a volunteer at your local VA.

It could be helpful if a schedule with dates and cities on the route, essentially a route map with approximate dates was part of the article. Folks like myself would be glad to offer physical support through encouragement. Bicycling, and riding for fund raising has been part of my history, sadly current health conditions prevent me from riding a bike. Physically “cheering” riders in support of their efforts would be fulfilling.
