In honor of Women’s History Month, VA is celebrating the accomplishments female service members have made while serving our country. In doing so, we reached out to women Veterans and their family members to supply photographs for a montage. The response was amazing—in less than a week, we’ve received 170 photographs of women in uniform that stretch beyond the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan back to World War II. The photos reflect a diverse group of women who are timelessly united by their willingness to serve.

    My father, Richard D. Lebo, was the radio operator on Aircraft 42-68809, Sixty-first TCSQ, 314th TC Gp that went down in Albania on November 8, 1943. He was rescued on January 7, 1944, with the rest of his crew and the Army nurses and medics aboard the plane by Major Lloyd G. Smith of the United States O.S.S. This mission was described in the books Albanian Escape: The True Story of US Army Nurses Behind Enemy Lines and Out of Albania: A True Account of a WWII Underground Rescue Mission. I am considering organizing a reunion of the children of these men and women as well as those relatives of other personnel involved in the rescue. I’d like to hear from you.     My father-in-law, Sgt. Herbert John “Bert” Bell was with the British S.O.E. (S.O.M.) assigned to aid the Partisans in the retrieval of the nurses. He documented how hard it was for the nurses with the cold rugged mountain trails and cliffs, poor clothing and footwear and the constant thread of being captured by the Germans. He received the Military Medal from the King for this mission.

    WWII, there was a rescue mission in Albania. My grandfather helped rescue three us nurses behind enemy lines.
    …Help me get some recognition for him (post mortem)…
