May 31st is World No Tobacco Day. Are you smoke-free? If so, VA wants to see what your healthy, active lifestyle looks like. Veterans and their friends and families are encouraged to submit photos of themselves participating in any healthy activity that is tobacco-free. Activities might include spending time at the pool, going to a baseball game, hiking, walking your dog, barbequing with family and friends, or any other tobacco-free, healthy activity that you enjoy. Just use the hashtag #SmokeFreeMe and post your photo(s) on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and/or Google+.
VA will collect photos beginning May 31st through June 12th. At the end of the submission period, we will compile the photos into a collage that will be shared on VA’s social media platforms so that everyone can see what it means to be smoke-free.

I SMOKED FOR FIFTY YEARS AND JUST QUIT COLD TURKEY I HAVE BEEN QUIT NOW FOR A LITTLE OVER FIVES YEARS. JUST SAY YOU ARE QUITTING AND DO IT.
I smoked for some 30 years until it caught up with me in 2002. The results wasn’t pretty as I had open heart surgery. CABGx4. My surgeon told me I had two choices to make; quit smoking and live or keep smoking and die! No one ever explained it to me that clear. I quit “cold turkey” and haven’t smoked since. After 38 years with Verizon/GTE I volunteer at The Medical Center of Plano (Texas) in the Cardiology Department. I have the pleasure of speaking with patients who are smokers and show them what can be accomplished when you quit smoking. I am a member of Mended Heart Inc.which is a heart support group.
My lungs are now clear and my heart arteries are clean with no plaque. I can actually smell the roses again. As they say in Mended Hearts, “It’s great to be alive, and to help others.” The photo attached is of our chapter president, on the left and your’s truly on the right. Please ignore my pot belly as I’m working on it.
