The VA Careers social sites, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram, offer valuable insight into the questions people have about working at the Department of Veterans Affairs. One of the questions often asked is: “I am not a Veteran. Does that mean I can’t be employed by VA?”  Many wonder if we only hire Veterans for open positions. The answer is, while we support and encourage Veterans to apply for positions with VA, we owe it to our Veterans to employ the most qualified individuals to care for them, whether they are Veterans or not.

The Veterans Health Administration represents 150 medical centers and nearly 1,400 clinics and other points of care across the country. We employ approximately 189,925 of the best clinical providers to care for over six million Veteran patients. Of those, approximately 33% of our employees are Veterans.

VHA encourages and supports qualified health care providers to consider a career with VA. For Veterans, a good resource is the Veteran Employment Services Office (VESO), which provides employment and career management resources designed to attract, retain and support Veteran employees at VA and across the federal government. VESO develops and implements innovative and comprehensive programs, procedures and services to support federal Veteran recruitment and VA retention and reintegration.

With Regional Veteran Employment Specialists located throughout the U.S., the recruiter/employment specialist can help Veterans in pursuit of a position that fits their specific skills, education, and experience, with personalized support that will enhance their pursuit of employment with VA.

I’m not even sure that they hire veterans as I am a Navy Vet 76 – 82 and even though they hired me in April, they have yet to bring me on board for reason that I cannot resolve on my own as you can tell by this link:

It is super hard to get into the VA… even when you are a veteran. :(
