On May 25, VA teamed up with Got Your 6 for a Facebook Live event on VA life insurance benefits. Bill Rausch, executive director at Got Your 6, and Kristan Hoffman, a VA insurance specialist, sat down to discuss benefit options, eligibility requirements and critical application deadlines.
During the video, they answered a few questions live from participants and directed them to additional resources, such as Explore.VA.gov. As soon as the video ended, VA experts were on hand to answer questions through the remainder of the event and the following day.
In case you missed it, check out some of the questions and answers below.
Many questions came through concerning application deadlines for disabled Veterans. Veterans with a zero percent disability rating may qualify for VA life insurance, but they must apply within two years of a new service-connected disability rating.
A few additional deadlines discussed included:
- Within one year and 120 days of separation – Apply for Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI).
- Within 240 days of separation – No health questions asked if you apply for VGLI and were covered by Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance at separation.
- Within 120 days of separation – Spouses must apply to convert their Spousal Coverage under Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance program to a participating company.
VA offers many different types of life insurance. Learn more about options and eligibility requirements.
Some Veterans wanted to know how to reach a VA insurance specialist on the phone while others were curious where they could go to apply online.
Veterans urged other Veterans to apply for VA life insurance as soon as they separate. If Veterans find better rates or coverage later, they can always drop their coverage through VA.
Thank you to all Veterans and their supporters who participated in the event and to Got Your 6 for hosting! Stay tuned to the ExploreVA events page for information about upcoming events.
