Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Marine Corps Veteran Floetta Marie Brown Barton. Floetta served during World War II from 1943 to 1945.
In an interview with the Veterans History Project, Floetta discussed her military career. She completed boot camp at Camp Lejune, North Carolina, before her first assignment at Quantico, Virginia. At Quantico, Floetta served as a secretary and bookkeeper for a major in charge of recreation and entertainment. She brought many famous entertainers to the base, including Jeanette MacDonald, Nelson Eddy, Major Bowes and Jane Withers.
Reflecting on her service, Floetta said, “I know I am a better person having served in the Marine Corps and I appreciate my freedom and I have a greater understanding of what it means to be an American.” As a mother and grandmother, she hoped to instill this sense of appreciation in her children and grandchildren.
We honor your service, Floetta.
