Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Navy Veteran, Laura E. Dwyer. Laura served from 1986 to 1991.
Based out of San Diego, California, Laura served the majority of her service aboard the U.S.S. Cape Cod AD-43. The U.S.S. Cape Cod departed from San Diego on Jan. 11, 1991 to replace the U.S.S. Acadia AD-42 in the Persian Gulf and aid in the conflict to liberate Kuwait from Iraq.
Included in the largest deployment of women to the Persian Gulf in U.S. history, Laura wrote a memoir of her experiences after her service ended titled A Sailor’s Memoirs About the Gulf War. One excerpt from her writing reads: “I always wanted to be on a ship, but never imagined that I’d be going out to a war, in the Middle East of all places. […] It may be a page in history books that we helped make.” (p. 9).
Laura currently lives in New Jersey.
We thank you for your service, Laura!
