VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System and Workforce Solutions Cameron joined forces to train Veterans on how to better use My HealtheVet, a web-based tool that helps more than 4.3 million Veterans improve their health by keeping track of their personal health information, refilling prescriptions and communicating with their health care provider through secure messaging.

Two training sessions have been held in Harlingen. Workforce Solutions Cameron stationed its mobile resource lab, which has about a dozen computer desktops with wireless Internet connection, at the parking lot to serve as a training classroom.

“My HealtheVet is a tool, but like any other tool it only proves its true value when it is put to good use,” said My HealtheVet coordinator Elliott Moore.  “These training sessions will help our Veterans [learn] how to enroll and understand some of great features that the My HealtheVet platform provides, which I hope will allow them to become one of the tens of thousands of Veterans who use it every day because it can empower them to have greater control when it comes to improving their own personal health and medical care.”

One of those Veterans Moore helped was Navy Veteran Pedro Ortiz Jr.

“Mr. Moore was very helpful,” said Ortiz. “Just learning how to reschedule my appointments on my own was worth it because now I don’t have to drive to one of the clinics in person and wait for a VA employee to make the change for me.”

Fellow Navy Veteran C.J. Cecconi also found the training sessions to be time well spent.

“I already had an existing My HealtheVet account and understood how to use some of the features, but what stood out to me was the fact that I can view my own individual medical results, which is a big help because I can then send an e-mail to my primary care team and provider and know I can expect a response within 72-hours or sooner,” said Cecconi. “I’m definitely coming back to the afternoon session so I can learn how to upgrade to the premium account, which I think every Veteran should try to get.”

My HealtheVet offers three account types: basic, advanced and premium. Anyone registering on My HealtheVet starts with a basic or advanced account. A basic account limits access to features such as medical libraries and allows the user to enter personal data into journals and other tools to track their health measures.

For those who select ‘Veteran, VA Patient” on the registration form, their profile information will be linked to VA/DoD records after completing a verification process. When this happens, their account is upgraded to the advanced level which offers a higher level of access than the basic account including:

A premium account includes all the features of a basic and advanced account, plus these services:

My HealtheVet works, and the statistics prove it. According to My HealtheVet Metrics, more than 100,000 new users have registered during the first quarter of 2018, bringing the total number of registrants to more than 4.3 million.  The metrics also indicate that for the first quarter of 2018, My HealtheVet has been used to send and receive more than 3.69 million secure messages and fulfill more than five million prescription refill requests.

Veterans who would like to create a My HealtheVet account can register online by searching My HealtheVet Registration on their Internet browser or by visiting: https://www.myhealth.va.gov/web/myhealthevet/user-registration
