Dr. Maria Pacheco spends her days taking care of patients with Multiple Sclerosis and managing the inpatient and outpatient delivery of care to Veterans with spinal cord injuries.
Dr. Stephen Burgher leads a team of critical care specialists in VA’s newest and most technologically advanced Emergency Medicine Service. Dr. Paul Hurd conducts clinics devoted to Veteran headache therapy and teaches residents and medical students as an assistant professor of Neurology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. All three of these VA physicians, and nine of their peers, were recently named as “Best Doctors” by D Magazine for 2018.
To be selected as an elite “Best Doctor” is no small feat–It means that your peers have nominated you from a pool of 10,000 area physicians based on who they would personally trust with the care and treatment of their loved ones.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by your peers,” said Pacheco, VA North Texas’ Spinal Cord Injury Center Clinical Operations manager. “And it’s an even bigger honor to be named as top provider among so many outstanding medical professionals here at VA North Texas.”
Hurd spent 31 years in practice before joining VA North Texas in 2015. In private practice, Hurd was a regular selectee to the annual “Best Doctor” list, but his selection for 2018 holds a special place among his numerous accolades.
“I was a little surprised to be selected this year as I think VA physicians are largely underappreciated by the public,” said Hurd, VA North Texas’ assistant chief of Neurology. “We have some outstanding, talented physicians here at VA North Texas and I’m honored to be recognized.”
Kerry Dunbar, VA North Texas’ Gastroenterology Section chief, and 2018 D Magazine “Best Doctor” moved to Dallas in 2011 to join a dedicated provider base that is dual-hatted as medical educators.
“At VA North Texas I get to provide the best care and treatment to our patients and pursue my clinical and research interests,” said Dunbar. “And I love taking care of our Veterans.”
The complete list of all 12 2018 D Magazine “Best Doctors” from VA North Texas includes: Subhash Banerjee, Stephen Burgher, Jonathan Dowell, Kerry Dunbar, Paul Hurd, George Ivanovskis, Yin Oo, Marie Fides Pacheco, Elizabeth Polanco, Phi Wiegn, Olaf Stuve and Dzung Le.
In 2017, VA North Texas provided care to 133,000 active patients over 1.5 million times by leveraging the skills and dedication of 5,700 employees at 11 facilities in 40 counties throughout North Texas and Southern Oklahoma.
