U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) invites transitioning service members with training as physicians and nurses to explore a VA healthcare career at the upcoming virtual open house on Jan. 16, 2019.
Providers ready for their next mission can talk to a recruiter about continuing a life of service as a VA healthcare provider,” said Darren Sherrard, Associate Director, Recruitment Marketing. “VA is eager to help service members transfer their healthcare training, leadership skills and experience to the many positions available at VA facilities across the country.”
At the virtual open house, service members in the United States and abroad can chat online with recruiters and choose where to start their healthcare career at VA.
“All service members need to do is register, login on the day of the event and submit their questions to recruiters, who will respond in real time,” said Sherrard.
During the Jan. 16 event, from 2 to 4 p.m. ET, transitioning military physicians and nurses can learn which VA positions are available and where they are located. They can also:
- Learn about what it’s like to work at VA.
- Provide contact information and resumes.
- Ask questions about how to set up an interview, apply and get hired.
“Look ahead to a career based on giving back and reduce financial stress knowing that a job is ready for you after separation,” Darren Sherrard, Associate Director, Recruitment Marketing.
Choose VA for military-specific preferences
Separating members of the military exploring VA careers should also know that these jobs may come with hiring preferences for qualified service members in transition, including those with a service-connected disability and other honorably discharged Veterans. If service members remain in the reserves or National Guard, VA provides paid time off to fulfill service duties.
VA careers also come with 36 to 49 days off, depending on specific leave tiers: tier 1 employees receive 36 days; tier 2, 43 days; and tier 3, 49 days. Physicians and nurses are title 38 employees, and so they start their VA careers in tier 3 with 49 days off. Permanent, full-time, board-certified physicians may get another five paid days off for continuing medical education.
Choose VA for unbeatable benefits
Other benefits of a VA healthcare career include competitive pay, ability to apply military service time to a civil service pension and option to participate in a 401(k) with up to 5 percent in matching contributions. Other benefits include:
- Work anywhere with one active license and locations across the United States and the territories.
- Care for family with premium-support group health insurance.
- Go mobile with telework options, transit support and, in some cases, child care subsidies.
- Plan ahead with access to the federal retirement system.
“Working for VA lets you apply the training and experience gained during service to improve patient care for 20 million Veterans,” said Sherrard. “The virtual open house is the perfect opportunity to get the ball rolling.”
