#VeteranOfTheDay Joseph Angelo Calabria

Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Korean War Army Veteran Joseph Angelo Calabria.

Drafted into the Army in 1951, Joseph served with the 715th Transportation Truck Company, 55th Truck Battalion. He was initially sent to Fort Lawton before deploying to Puson, Korea, in 1952. Joseph was responsible for delivering weapons, food and other supplies to soldiers on the front lines.

After he was discharged from the Army, Joseph continued to serve his fellow Veterans as an advocate. He was active in several Veterans organizations, such as Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. For 18 years he was commander of the Corporal Allan V. Kivlehan Chapter of Korean War Veterans and was involved in setting up a Korean Veterans Memorial on Staten Island. He often said, “If you like your freedom, thank a Vet.”

For his service, Joseph was awarded with the Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal with three campaign stars and many others.

Joseph passed away on July 28, 2017.
