Virtual events let healthcare jobseekers explore careers serving Veterans

Graduates of the Health Professional Scholarship Program (HPSP) are gearing up to attend a new, innovative U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Careers event: a virtual career fair.

Although the first virtual event this month is open only to HPSP graduates, it is one of many virtual career fairs planned to highlight career opportunities at VA. No matter where they’re located around the country, jobseekers attending virtual events can explore open job opportunities, chat with recruiters and choose where to start their healthcare career at VA.

“All virtual event attendees have to do is register, login on the day of the event and submit their questions to the applicable recruiter — it’s that simple,” said Darren Sherrard, associate director of recruitment marketing. “VA Careers is excited to host additional virtual events in the coming weeks and months covering careers for transitioning military, mental health professionals, urologists and nurses.”

At the HPSP virtual event, on Dec. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. ET, participants can:

• Connect directly with a recruiter and/or hiring manager from a VA facility on the virtual platform.
• Ask questions and get answers in real time.
• Provide their contact information and resume.
• Learn how to set up an interview, apply and get hired.

HPSP is one of several VA programs that provide financial assistance to students receiving education and training in a healthcare services discipline. In exchange for the award, scholarship program participants agree to a service obligation in a VA healthcare facility.

“We are looking forward to connecting this year’s graduates with recruiters of registered nurses and nurse practitioners,” said Rodney Back, national placement coordinator for the HPSP. “We encourage HPSP graduates to take advantage of this time to prepare for their new career at VA.”

Virtual events are designed to share information about the benefits of working at VA, including paid days off, medical and dental insurance, and federal retirement planning. Attendees are also able to download information to review with friends, family and networks and schedule one-on-one chat sessions with a VA recruiter to discuss career options.

These events review other perks of a VA healthcare career such as the ability to work anywhere in the United States, Puerto Rico, American Samoa and Guam with one active license. In addition, VA employees who move to a new facility can take their benefits with them. Some employees receive mobile telework options, transportation support and child care subsidies.
