Honoring Vets

Here at VA, we take time during this 31-day period to praise those men and women of Hispanic descent who didn’t just enjoy America’s freedoms, they chose to take up arms to defend those freedoms.

Although a scheduled Sept. 25 flyover of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was cancelled due to weather, event organizers still honored World War II Veterans and the 75th anniversary of the end of the war. More than 16 million Veterans served during World War II, some of whom participated in the events prior to the scheduled flyover. One of those Veterans is 95-year-old Marine Corps Veteran Paul Hilliard.

Volunteers are returning to national cemeteries under certain circumstances, following strict COVID-19 guidance. More than 40 volunteers displayed the new policies during an event Sept. 19 at Culpeper National Cemetery in Virginia. A group from a local Latter-day Saints church cleaned headstones while wearing masks and practicing social distancing.

On Dec. 8, 2020, U.S. Army Veteran David Harker will celebrate his 75th birthday. He may recognize the accomplishment while on his daily five mile walk, or by taking a drive in his 47-year-old car – a 1973 Corvette he’s owned since it was given to him by classmates when he returned from Vietnam after spending more than five years as a prisoner of war.

Admiral Chester W. Nimitz decided that, in death, he wanted to join his men at Golden Gate with a standard military funeral and regulation headstone. He took steps to assure that the shipmates closest to him during World War II could join him.
