On March 6, 2022, Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs Donald Remy delivered remarks during the 57th anniversary commemoration of Bloody Sunday in Selma, Ala.
Native Vets will get the care, benefits, services, and honor they deserve—on Veterans Day, and every day. There are so many ways in which we’re working to keep that promise.
By 2040, minority Veterans are expected to represent 37 percent of the Veteran population. And by 2050, minorities will make up more than half of our Veteran population. Those numbers make clear that we must be far better prepared to answer the specific health care needs of our very diverse America.
Ms. Ruddock was a proud woman. She was proud of her heritage. She was proud to be an American. And she was rightly proud of her service. Once asked about her service, she simply stated—but we all know enormously understated—“I did what I was told, and I did what I had to do.”
Native Americans serve in the military in greater numbers than any other group, and it is because of your sacrifices that all Americans sleep soundly at night. I’m inspired by your bravery, by your warrior tradition, and by the proud legacy of your forebears, the heroic Alaska Territorial Guard and the Eskimo Scouts.
The unknown story of Alaska’s service is that those who could not formally join the military, from ages 80 down to 12, still signed up. Over 6,000 served the United States of America without pay and at great sacrifice. They served fearlessly, and it is my privilege to honor their service.
