Gulf Coast VA hosts 3D printing workshop

After the Gulf Coast VA received three 3D printers from Central Arkansas VA, they held a 3D Printing Workshop.

The three-day workshop was led by Innovation Specialist Alyssa Welch. Topics covered were 3D printing materials, systems operations, and hands on trouble shooting.

3D printing can lead to innovations in patient care and treatment

The workshop was an opportunity to brainstorm discovery methods put in to place to explore how a 3D Printing Program can best support employees and Veterans.

3D printing capability in 70 VA facilities

Across VA, there are 70 facilities with varied 3D printing capability. The printing technology can be used to improve patient needs, convey personalized care to patients, and lead to innovations in patient care and treatment.

“This very exciting technology is sparking Veteran and employee interest. The benefits of using the 3D printers for product prototyping, development, and many other use cases is limitless. We look forward to bringing this opportunity to both the Veterans we serve as well as the employees,” said Innovation Specialist Sheena Strong

A valuable benefit of the 3D Printing program is the ability to create prototypes for solutions to problems that affect both Veterans and employees.

Top priorities

• Open 3D printing hours for both employees and Veterans printers
• Create a 3D printing team at the facility
• Investigate benefits for using 3D printing in various services

“The potential innovative impact of incorporating 3D printing in VA health care facilities and allowing Veterans and employees to creatively design clinical solutions can ultimately improve not only the care but the experience in VA health care,” said Innovation Specialist Elizabeth Williams

A donation of three laptop computers from Waste Pro-Laptops for Veterans Program supported the 3D printing donation. The Waste Pro-Laptops for Veterans Program enables Veterans to add to their technical skill sets to be more competitive in the marketplace for new career opportunities.
