We recently conducted a broad poll on our LinkedIn page with the question, “What area of the country are you looking for work?” The poll then divided the country into four regions: East Coast, West Coast, Midwest and South.
Last month, we explored the East Coast, but this time around, we’re moving a little further inland. The Midwest region came in at No. 3 on our informal survey, but there are a number of careers available to those looking to explore the open plains.
Veterans Integrated Service Networks
Veterans’ health care in the United States is separated geographically into 18 regions known as Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISNs). These regional systems of care work together to better meet local health care needs and provide greater access to care for Veterans.
In the Midwest, there is some overlap between states based on population, but overall, you can say that there are four VISNs:
- VA Healthcare System (VISN 10) in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois
- VA Great Lakes Healthcare System (VISN 12) in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin
- VA Heartland Network (VISN 15) in Illinois, Kansas and Missouri
- VA Midwest Healthcare Network (VISN 23) in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota
Find your place
Across these four VISNs, there are hundreds of facilities and thousands of jobs. For example, VA Great Lakes Healthcare System is home to 48 different facilities, while VA Midwest Healthcare Network serves over 400,000 Veterans, which means plenty of opportunity for you to join our team.
Here are just a few of the jobs you’ll find in the Midwest.
- Recognizing the importance of keeping our facilities safe and clean for the Veterans who visit us, VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System in Cleveland is recruiting for multiple housekeeping aides to assist in environmental services.
- In Superior, Wisconsin, our community-based outpatient clinic needs a skilled audiologist to conduct evaluations and determine any rehabilitation and counseling needs for Veterans and their families.
- If you’re a registered nurse (RN), Kansas City VA Medical Center in Missouri is looking for an RN to work in the peri-anesthesia care unit, where you will assist Veterans with pre-operative and post-recovery care from anesthesia related to surgery.
- VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Healthcare System in Omaha is looking for a nursing assistant to provide care to Veterans in the medical/surgical unit, offering support to the nursing staff and interaction with the Veterans and their families.
These are by no means the only jobs available at these facilities, but this selection serves to showcase that there are hundreds of hands that come together to heal our Veterans each and every day in a variety of ways.
