VA’s Caregiver Support Program (CSP) is committed to supporting caregivers with empathy and compassion. Recognizing the dedication and effort caregivers provide Veterans, CSP has launched a new initiative, the Virtual Psychotherapy Program for Caregivers (VPPC).
For those who spend most of their time caring for a Veteran, the demands can be overwhelming. VPPC is designed to offer much-needed support for you. This program provides caregivers participating in the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) with access to various therapy options through virtual telehealth sessions.
What is the Virtual Psychotherapy Program for Caregivers?
VPPC offers a comprehensive range of therapy services to caregivers ensuring they receive the mental health support they need without leaving the comfort of their homes. The program includes:
- Individual therapy: One-on-one sessions tailored to address personal mental health concerns,
- Group therapy: Facilitated group sessions that provide a supportive community and shared experiences.
- Couples/family therapy: Therapy sessions aimed at addressing family dynamics and strengthening relationships.
“Caring for the mental, emotional and psychological health of our caregivers is imperative,” said CSP Executive Director Dr. Colleen Richardson. “Our Caregivers need therapeutic support and a mental health professional to speak with so that they, too, can take care of themselves while caring for their Veteran. Mental health support is a lifeline for our caregivers, one that they need and deserve.”
Benefits of VPPC
VPPC offers several key advantages:
- Improved mental health: Access to professional therapy can significantly enhance the mental well-being of caregivers.
- Confidential and customized therapy: Each session is tailored to meet the unique needs of the caregiver, ensuring personalized care.
- Convenience of virtual sessions: Therapy can be accessed from home, eliminating the need for travel and allowing caregivers to fit sessions into their busy schedules.
How to participate
Caregivers currently participating in PCAFC who are interested in the VPPC can reach out to their local CSP teams using the locator tool available on VA’s website. CSP teams then can initiate a referral to VPPC. Additionally, caregivers can call the Caregiver Support Line at 1-855-260-3274 to connect with other available resources.
“VPPC underscores our dedication to providing comprehensive support to caregivers, recognizing the vital role they play in the lives of Veterans. With this program, VA continues to lead the way in offering innovative solutions to enhance the well-being of those who care for our Nation’s heroes,” said Richardson.
