If you think college rankings are only about who is going to play whom in what bowl, think again. Veterans are having such a strong impact on campuses that wise schools are figuring out how to make us at home.

For example, U.S. News and World Report, a major resource for selecting colleges, has included the “Best Colleges for Veterans” – listing the top-ranked schools that participate in federal initiatives helping Veterans and active-duty service members pay for their degrees – in its 2016 Best Colleges rankings. The rankings cover national universities, liberal arts colleges, regional universities and regional colleges. The methodology uses the following criteria:

  1. The institution must be certified for the GI Bill.
  2. The institution participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program or is a public school that charges in-state tuition to all out-of-state Veterans. In short, you have many choices for a Veteran-friendly college that recognizes the contribution you have made your country. We encourage you to research all your options. It’s an exciting time to be on campus as a Veteran. Just as Veterans changed higher education in the 1940s after WWII, the same phenomenon is happening today. We’re all better off for it: the schools and us.
  3. The rankings include some of the U.S. News best-value regional colleges and universities as well as some of the most prestigious institutions in the country. The site also lets you check out the best online programs for Veterans for Bachelor’s as well as post-graduate degrees.
