The HELP Veterans Village is a new facility located near the Perry Point VA Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland with 75 newly renovated and newly constructed units of energy-efficient housing built to serve at-risk and formerly homeless Veterans. The village is an ideal location for Veterans and their family that are constantly suffering from unstable housing with its close proximity to a variety of VA support programs and service, case management and other Veterans in a similar situation.
The project was announced in 2009 when the VA put a notice to gauge nonprofit interest for the development project but disagreements over the location, purpose and additional concerns that the area did not host many homeless Veterans threatened to derail it. HELP USA won the contract in 2011, but reconstruction did not begin until 2014. The project created 75 units that will be entirely occupied by Veterans and their families and the possibility of almost completely free housing provided for by the HUD-VASH voucher program. Thirty-three of the buildings will be split into 66 one-bedroom apartments, while eight buildings will be made into eight two-bedroom apartments and one building will become a three-bedroom apartment.
The HELP Veterans Village is a project started by HELP USA with contributions from the VA Maryland Healthcare System, the State of Maryland, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the US Department of Veterans Affairs, the Home Depot Foundation, National Equity Fund, TD Bank, Kramer+Marks Architects, Northrop Grumman, the Citi Foundation and Harkins Builders.
