VA is proud to work with a variety of charities and programs dedicated to supporting Veterans and their families. One of our partners is Fisher House Foundation—a not-for-profit organization that builds comfort homes where military families can stay free of charge while their loved ones receive medical treatment nearby. Thirty-two out of 72 total Fisher Houses are located at VA medical campuses nationwide with new constructions currently underway.
In the mid-1970’s, Pauline Trost was inspired to provide affordable, temporary housing for military families in crisis. With the support of her husband, Admiral Carlisle Trost, she presented the idea to friends and philanthropists Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher, who promptly agreed to invest in the project. In 1991, the first Fisher House opened its doors. Today, Fisher Houses feature up to 21 private bedroom/bathroom suites with shared areas: kitchen, laundry facilities, dining room and living room. The accommodations allow families of Veterans receiving care at a VA hospital to stay within walking distance for the duration of treatment. Since the program’s launch, Fisher House has helped over 335,000 military families—including 30,000+ in 2017—and saved them around $407 million in lodging and transportation costs.
Fisher House Foundation also operates the Hero Miles Program, which provides round-trip airfare for service members and their families requiring treatment at a military or VA medical center. The program is supported by frequent flyer donations from individuals. Are you ready to help make the road to healing smoother for Veterans and their families? You, too, can make a difference—explore our available positions and apply today.
