Air Force Veteran Juan served from 1962 to 1969. He didn’t come to VA for health care until years later, and is very happy with the care he has received.

When did you first apply for VA benefits?

I would say maybe 15, maybe more, years ago because I used to be self-employed. And I paid my doctor and all that until I went broke. I became a diabetic.

VA put me in this system where I saw a private doctor because I lived far from the hospital. I lived on the other side of town.

How is your VA care compared to your experiences with private care?

So, I always had a private doctor and all that. And to be honest with you, I liked VA a little bit better. So my doctor said, Well go to the VA hospital, which I really didn’t want to, I was kind of embarrassed. It was like being on welfare I thought.

But I did anyway and I’m glad I did. They take really good care of me and I’m very happy that I am part of that because I feel like it could possibly save my life.

What services do you receive from VA?

I do everything on my phone. I pick up my phone, I dial VA and I put in my prescription number. And I get it in the mail in the next couple of days. Everything. Including my insulin. I get that in a little box that becomes a little portable fridge. It’s really awesome.

I have never had a problem getting my medicines. VA recently took out my cataracts. They peeled them off and they put a lens behind it so I can see now, and I don’t have to look for my glasses in the mornings.

VA has not only helped me with my sight, I have hearing aids. Those things are like $1800 apiece. I’ve got two of them. I’ve got glasses that turn into sunglasses. I can get up and not only that, I’ve started working out again! Because I know I’m ready again. (laughs)

Applied to VA during my outprocessing from AF active duty in 2017. Nothing but excellent service from them. Have PT and eye care next Friday, much appreciated.

I am still waiting for the VA to reply to my questions on why some of these “Why I use the VA” have VA benefits not based on military duties!!
My next question will be directed to my Congressional representatives!
