“It’s all about taking care of Veterans,” said Michael Owens, a recruiting and retention marketing specialist with VA, in one of a series of testimonial videos that can be found on the VA Careers website highlighting what it means to work at VA.
Those who choose VA know there’s something special about their jobs. They understand what it means to serve Veterans and have adopted that mission as their own. These videos give you a chance to hear directly from the people who made the choice to work with us – and for our Veterans.
Joining our team
“Working at VA is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” said Sarah Lueger, a community living center nurse manager.
With a system that spans the United States and territories like Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands, prospects for relocation and promotion are abundant. Many employees find that an advantage to working at VA is that it’s a place where individual contributions are valued by both the Veterans we serve and the organization.
“VA offers a lot of opportunities, opens a lot of doors for people,” said Michelle Valentine, an interior designer. “If you want to move up, those doors are there. VA gives you that opportunity.”
Dr. Toni Garvin, a VA hospitalist, is one of many people who joined VA for the benefits but found that the mission and the culture of VA made it a place she wanted to stay.
“When I first started working here, it was part of a loan repayment program, and after I satisfied my five years, I did not want to leave,” she explained. “You also get the wonderful feeling of helping our nation’s heroes. I go home, and I’m like, ‘I saw a World War II Vet today!’ You can’t get that anywhere else.”
Innovation abounds
You’ll also be part of an innovative team working on the cutting edge of medical advancement. As we heal Veterans, we are always looking for the newest and best ways to meet their needs.
In some cases, that’s applying medical advancements. In others, that’s taking on a new approach to care, like the implementation of Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) programs.
PACTs place the Veteran at the center of the care process. From taking their information at the front line to intake procedures to their first meeting with a primary care physician, Veterans become the focus of the PACT.
Then, after assessing a patient’s medical needs, the primary care doctor can consult with other specialists, pulling them in and making them part of the patient’s team. The result is a core value at VA: a patient-centered, patient-focused culture dedicated to serving our Veterans.
“I feel like it is an overall great experience for the Veteran,” said Brianna L. Pittman, an advanced medical support assistant.
