When someone chooses to serve our country, their family serves with them, and no one knows that better than military spouses.

You may not be on the front lines, but as a military spouse, you’re fighting your own battles at home every day. It is that spirit of dedication, resilience and adaptability that makes military spouses like you so valuable, not just to your families, but to employers.

At VA, we recognize the unique skills that you bring to the table. As the spouse of a service member or Veteran, you have a distinct perspective on what we do at VA and how to help our patients. That’s experience we can’t put a price on.

The power of perspective

The choice to come to VA is a perfect transition for military spouses because you understand our mission, and we understand the challenges you face in finding work that accommodates the transient nature of military service.

“When you’re surrounded by military people as I was, you understand what active duty military and Veterans are going through or have gone through,” said Cheryl L. Mason, chairman of the VA Board of Veterans Appeals, who found a career at VA as a military spouse and made it into something extraordinary. “You understand the culture. I understand the situation because I lived it.”

The VA commitment

At VA, we know you have what it takes. That’s why we’ve partnered with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) program. MSEP creates employment connections that provide companies with direct access to military spouses seeking career opportunities, and provides spouses like you with direct access to employers – like VA – who are actively recruiting.

We have also partnered with DOD’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO) program, which provides education and career guidance to military spouses worldwide. SECO offers comprehensive resources and tools related to career exploration, education, training and licensing, employment readiness and career connections.

Finally, we’re doing everything we can to make your job search easier. We tag VA openings ideal for military spouses on USAJobs.gov, and highlight key information – remote work opportunities, flexible work schedules, child care and health benefits – in our job announcements.

Getting started

If you’re a military spouse, the best place to start looking for your new VA career is on USAJobs.gov. You may be eligible to apply using a non-competitive process, but be sure that a job is supported by this process.

The easiest way to verify is using the search function. In each advertisement, you’ll want to check the “This job is open to” section.

When a job is open to military spouses, you’ll see an icon that looks like two interlocking white circles on a green circle. That’s your signal that this position is open to military spouses.

If you want to narrow your options down, you can also select the “military spouses” filter in your initial search. Your results will then display only jobs open to military spouses. These jobs may be open to other qualifying candidate groups as well, but your qualifications will make you an ideal candidate.

Work at VA

With the resiliency and adaptability you’ve learned as a military spouse, you’re a perfect fit for our mission.
