“To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan.”
– President Abraham Lincoln
President Lincoln articulated for the nation a basic truth: that those who have made the greatest sacrifices in service to their country deserve their country’s service in return. And as our nation’s Veterans know all too well, service requires action.
Fulfilling the promise that President Lincoln made on behalf of the country is the mission of VA. It’s also the chosen responsibility of the physicians, nurses, allied health and other health care professionals who work every day to honor the service of our Veterans by caring for them with compassion, dedication and exceptional skill.
VA is guided by a set of core values we call ICARE:
• Integrity
• Commitment
• Advocacy
• Respect
• Excellence
Our ICARE values are central not only to our service but to our very identity, guiding our decisions, our interactions, and our sense of who we are and why we’re here.
VA offers America’s doctors, nurses, allied health and support professionals a unique opportunity to comfort and care for Veterans and their loved ones in life-changing ways. Today, we invite you to help us fulfill America’s promise to our Veterans. Discover the joy and satisfaction of giving back to those who have served our country—search open positions and apply.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to provide care to Veterans outside a traditional clinical setting, Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) is a great option.
A key part of your job search is finding the right fit for you and your skills, and workplace culture can impact that dramatically.
So when will VA actually reach out to veterans, especially the 60% over 60, who don’t have or aren’t comfortable with the internet. I drive thru dead zones everyday going to & from work, if you can’t get a cell signal you sure as heck don’t have internet. And yet the 6 year old VA Benefits Assistance Service Manual, M27-1, still seems as much a secret as the Wartime Veterans & Surviving Spouses (non-service connected) Pension. Believe me it is the most unknown and under used benefits, heck even the assisted livings and nursing homes don’t know and yet most wartime veterans/surviving spouse in those facilities are or will be eligible for it.
Or as secret as the fact that ALS is a Presumptive illness since veterans are near twice as likely to develop it, and that the veteran (if living) or surviving spouse are entitled to compensation. Or the 37 cancers and other conditions related to Agent Orange in Vietnam, some AF bases in Thailand, and the DMZ during the Vietnam War.
11 years as a CVSO who mistakenly thought the VA would start doing the right thing when I read M27-1. Can you tell I am upset with VBA and really looking forward to retirement. Radio, TV, Public Radio, national news, heck even TV talk shows but instead it is use the internet. VBA – shame on you!
This is one of the biggest lies in VA’s history. I have a claim open for 49 years, 2 BVA remands from 77, *3 and try an file criminal charges against corrupt VA employees, one VA office say call the other and it never get processed?? This why vets kill themselves, out of VA frustration..
Its very hard to say I CARE when you get black Bald, I don’t know what that means anymore, I just no there’s no where to go. Untold story/abandoned veteran.
In my email there is no break between President Lincoln’s promise and what comes after that and it’s a little confusing I figured it out but just a heads up
I am a widow of a man who served 20 years Air Force and another 20 years in civilian service for the Air Force. He died in 2015 and assured me prior to his death I would be entitled to VA benefits as his surviving spouse. To date I have been unable to find out what benefits are available for me. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me.
