At VA, our pharmacists are valued members of patient care teams that focus on Veteran wellness. As a part of that team, you’ll be able to make clinical decisions on behalf of your patients, and you’re sure to enjoy a career that makes great use of your training and expertise.

Opportunities at every stage in your career

What you can accomplish with VA extends far beyond a career. We’re proud to invest in your future and offer avenues to further develop your unique talent.

At the start of your career, we have many possibilities for you to explore. Pharmacists in VA work in a number of roles and locations, including supporting Veterans in substance abuse treatment programs, working with patients in outpatient clinics or offering care as part of a community living center.

For more experienced professionals, we value your skills and interests and fully support your transition to a VA pharmacy practice. We provide extensive orientation, as well as advanced clinical pharmacy training and tuition reimbursement. As part of the VA network, you’ll have access to a team of over 6,000 pharmacists nationwide who can help you navigate this new frontier in your career.

Finally, when the time comes, you can help shepherd the next generation of VA pharmacists. As part of VA’s community, your experience and leadership are valuable resources that will help your peers provide the care our Veterans deserve.

The chance to direct change

VA looks beyond traditional clinical roles to give pharmacists more influence on the course of patient care. On our team, pharmacists have unique responsibilities, like being able to write prescriptions directly.

At VA, pharmacists often will receive the diagnosis from the doctor but will write and fill a prescription based on a patient’s medication history and their own knowledge.

“Having prescriptive authority is one reason I chose to pursue a residency with VA,” says first-year pharmacy resident Andrea Feldkamp. “This authority lifts one barrier to timely access to care because we’re able to apply our expertise without having to find time in a doctor’s busy schedule to enter the prescription.”
