We’ve often mentioned that VHA operates the Nation’s largest integrated health care system – with more than 1,700 sites of care – and employs over 300,000 health care professionals. This week, we’re honoring one of the most vital components of that system: our nurses. Eighty thousand strong, these care givers are the life blood behind our ability to meet the challenging needs of America’s Veterans.
While VHA is making special efforts to recognize National Nurses Week, our nurses deserve thanks for their dedication and compassion each and every day. The personal contact and professional care provided by each level of the nursing team is vital to each Veteran’s health experience in VHA. Take a look at some of the testimonials from VHA nurses and you’ll see why they do what they do.
Sharla, a Licensed Vocational Nurse in Texas, shared her experience with VHA with us. “I love working here. The Veterans need good nurses, and they are so grateful for even the smallest need that’s met,” she said. “It’s also a good experience to work here. There are many new advances in technology that we utilize that are not in place at other health facilities.”
This week provides the encouragement for us to thank a nurse – or several nurses – who has looked after our needs and helped us feel a little better. Take this opportunity to do so by visiting the VHA Nurses Week Appreciation website and using the hashtag #ThankAVANurse on social media. But let’s make that just the starting point. Whenever you have an opportunity – any day of the year – let these professionals know you appreciate their commitment to the health and well-being of the Veterans they care for.
Being a nurse at VHA is a rewarding and satisfying opportunity to help our Veterans and their families. Whether you’re a former Service member and want to continue serving in a new way, or a health care professional interested in VHA, Join Us in helping Veterans and their families.
