A study from Northwestern University compared patient experience, behavioral health measures and overall outcomes between VA and non-VA hospitals. Utilizing hospital-level data, researchers determined that VA hospitals outperform non-VA hospitals on most quality measures. They reported their findings in the medical publication JAMA Internal Medicine.
Researchers gathered data through Medicare and Medicaid’s website, comparing 129 VA hospitals with 4,010 non-VA hospitals. They found VA hospitals had better outcomes than non-VA hospitals on six of nine patient safety indicators, with no significant differences for the other three indicators. VA hospitals also had better mortality and re-admission rates than non-VA hospitals.
These findings are a testament to the VA quality of care.
