VA has a need for housekeeping staff to help keep facilities clean and safe for patients, staff and visitors.
We are seeking to quickly fill positions at facilities across the nation. We’re looking for quality employees who will help Veterans get better fast. New openings are going up daily, so please visit VA Careers or the USA Jobs website daily for the most up-to-date postings.
Vital support staff
Each year, nearly 9 million Veterans undergo surgeries, recover from injuries, and receive care for acute and chronic conditions at VA.
Behind the scenes, thousands of support services staff members make this possible by keeping our medical centers and outpatient clinics clean and safe. They manage spills quickly, discard trash, install light bulbs, vacuum and scrub floors, and more.
“Our housekeeping staff is absolutely essential to providing a sanitary and healthy environment for our patients,” said Darren Sherrard, associate director of VA recruitment marketing.
Enjoy excellent benefits
VA housekeeping aides receive:
- Paid vacation time that accrues right away, paid sick leave and 10 paid federal holidays.
- Health insurance, including dental and vision, which may become effective on the first full pay period after the job starts.
- Access to the Federal Employees’ Retirement System (FERS), a three-tier retirement plan composed of Social Security, FERS basic benefits and the Thrift Savings Plan.
Child care and transportation assistance programs may also be available.
VA employees who have previously served in the military or another federal government role continue to accrue retirement benefits.
“As a housekeeping aide, you’ll be working alongside other Veterans, who make up 85 percent of the custodial staff,” Sherrard said.
Housekeeping aide positions are open at VA facilities across the United States and its territories. Transferring between locations is easy and you’ll take all of your benefits with you, including accumulated paid time off.

Tango,
You need to call Voluntary Service at the VA near you to find out what is required to volunteer. I worked for the VA for 43 years, & frequently utilized volunteers in Engineering Service. To request a volunteer we filled out a simple one-page form to describe type of work/duties, work schedule, etc. Prior to volunteering, the volunteers completed paperwork & attended a VA orientation. Be sure to specify on your application your areas of interest so you can be well placed. We had volunteers in the office, helping in various trades (electrical, electronics, carpentry, painting, general mechanics, grounds maintenance, pipefitting, plumbing, construction, safety, etc.) & in many other departments of the hospital. Good luck!
If you are really needing people you need to go hire from the cwt people first. We don’t get paid time off or any other benefits but do the same work. Hiring from cwt should be mandatory. And if the va thinks different that’s because they make more than 8 dollars an hour and can probably afford luxuries like groceries
I attend school during the day, online now, but can be available in the evenings. I live in Houston, Texas.

Unless the VA changes it but in system these will go unfilled for 6 months to a year. They have to be offered within the individual VA facilities for 90 days. Then it is opened up to all VA facilities and employees for another 90 days. After that maybe they will open it to the public. If you check the USA jobs website you can see the open positions and the icon indicating that the position is open to current employees only.
