Millions of Veterans rely on VA for health care – and in turn, we rely on human resources (HR) professionals to recruit and support the professionals who care for them.

HR specialists tackle a variety of duties each day, making them some of the most in-demand positions we have throughout our system.

“VA service begins with VA people. HR managers help ensure that we attract, employ and retain the best and most qualified people, so that we can continue to provide the highest level of care to Veterans across the country,” said Darren Sherrard, associate director of recruitment marketing.

What you’ll be doing

Our HR team supports our mission in many ways, offering a variety of roles for you to pursue in your VA career. Much of the work begins face-to-face with the people around you.

You might find yourself working directly with recruiters to secure top-tier talent for the agency. Or you might support employees by addressing labor relations or acting as a mediator between management and staff.

HR specialists can also tackle much broader topics, applying a more top-down perspective to how we manage our employees. Recent efforts throughout the federal employment system have seen senior leaders address changes to the workforce, and some HR specialists support efforts to restructure employee management or simply help teams adjust to new responsibilities.

What you bring to VA

We’re looking for HR professionals with diverse skill sets who can offer the best possible support to our employees as we serve Veterans.

As one of our HR specialists, you know how to:

  • Clearly define a problem and probe at the root causes
  • Use technology to your advantage
  • Develop your listening and communication skills
  • Effectively communicate and navigate the virtual world, including the use of social media
  • Produce well-written and effective reports that communicate useful information

What we offer

If you’re looking to begin a career in HR, we offer a technical career field program aimed at training and developing HR professionals. The program provides a foundation for developing HR trainees from entry level to full performance level.

There are HR jobs available in facilities across the country, with nearly a quarter of our health care systems indicating a need to recruit more HR staff. Whether you’re looking for a more urban environment or you feel the call of the wide-open rural parts of the country, you’ll be able to discover a VA location that suits your tastes.

These positions also come with excellent benefits, including an exceptional retirement plan, generous paid time off and robust health insurance.

I’ve applied for varying hr and other positions over the last 10 years and never received a phone call. I have 10 years hr experience with a BBA in Human Resources and a MS in Human Resources Development. It’s not as easy as people say if you have the right credentials. It’s all determined based on who you know.

I have applied in the past. I am a retired Lt Col with a BS in business, a master’s in public administration, and a doctorate in organizational leadership. I also have 10 years of recruiting experience. I have never even been called to interview.
