More than eight million men and women served during the Vietnam era, more than three million in the Southeast Asia theater. Across America, medical centers are holding special welcome home events.

Two weeks in Vietnam was an emotional journey for 52 Vietnam Veterans from Wisconsin. There were no protests when they came back home this time. “People were saluting and shaking our hands.”

Vietnam veteran Milton Lee Olive III made the ultimate sacrifice to save his fellow infantrymen during combat in 1965 by falling on a enemy-thrown grenade.

Terry and Darryl worked with each other for 25 years but neither knew they were both Vietnam Veterans. A weekly group brought them and other Vietnam Vets together to share their experiences.

I implicitly understood that I had to let go of those first VA memories and experiences along with the associated anger and embrace the positive, loving care I saw every day at the VA in every venue I passed through as a chaplain.

May is Hepatitis Awareness Month and VA is getting the word out about hepatitis C testing and treatment. Hepatitis C is a disease that affects the liver. Veterans are at higher risk for hepatitis C and testing is recommended for Vietnam Era Veterans and those born between 1945 and 1965.

The memorial will honor the 2,706 Marines and sailors who died in Vietnam while serving with the 5th Marine Regiment in Vietnam.

March 29 is National Vietnam War Veterans Day.  This special day was added to our national holidays when the president signed into law the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017.
