“Start a mindfulness practice? I don’t have time!”

Most people have one minute to spare for their own health and well-being. Join Employee Whole Health Program Manager and Nurse Marcy B. Newman as she guides you through a one-minute intention setting practice. With this short practice, you can be reminded how to bring intentions from the heart into your daily work life.

This short practice can remind you how to bring intentions from the heart into your daily work life simply by remembering to be present. While this sounds like a simple task, we often need reminders to maintain mindful practice of being present.

Our minds like to spend time thinking about the past (“Maybe I should have said this yesterday.”) or planning for the future (“I will wash my car this weekend.”). All these thoughts are typical of the busy mind, but whenever we think about the past or the future, we are less connected to the here and now—the present. To bring your best self to work, or to life, you need to be present in the here and now.

Cues are provided in this practice to remind your body how to breathe deeply and comfortably. As you set an intention for your day you can be connected to being present for the work you are about to start and be ready to give of yourself with heartfelt kindness.

While a one-minute practice may not be quite enough to get all the benefits of a mind-body practice like mindfulness, it can be a good starting point or quick reminder through the day of how to connect with our inner selves when the outside world seems so big.

I did self-hypnosis for years, beginning in college, and used it when I gave birth. Yep. It worked! I was having a C-section for twins and I could hear my heart thumpthumpthumping. A nurse put her hand on my arm and urged me to calm down. I immediately began my well-practiced routine and heard my heart slow to a steady thump…thump…thump where it remained throughout that procedure. Proof that it worked. I amazed myself.
Thank you for offering this. I hope everyone practices it enough to use it when they need it.
