Make strides in women’s health with a career at VA

In recognition of International Women’s Day on March 8 and Women’s History Month throughout March, we celebrate the contributions to women’s health that started at VA, as well as the women who made it possible.

For over 100 years, women have played an important role in the development and support of VA’s mission to support Veterans. Do you know:

• Who appointed the first 10 doctors at VA to treat women Veterans?
• Who became the first African American to lead a VA hospital?
• Who established our Women Veterans Comprehensive Health Centers?
• Who currently oversees health care for women Veterans throughout VA?

If you guess that they’re all women, you would be right, and this sampling shows that women’s health at VA is an ongoing process, one of innovation and communication with the fastest growing segment of the Veteran population.

“Our female Veteran population is growing, and the services for female Veterans are expanding,” explained Melinda Matos-Toro, a clinical pharmacy specialist at the Mayagüez VA Outpatient Clinic. “The services that are being provided for the female Veterans are exceptional and very comprehensive.”
