Choose a career where you can be a front-line leader in Veterans’ healthcare by applying to become a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center Executive Director.

Applicants licensed as physicians or dental officers are invited to apply for open positions in these cities: Beckley, West Virginia; Big Spring, Texas; Cleveland, Ohio; Fargo, North Dakota; Leeds, Massachusetts; Los Angeles, California; Saint Cloud, Minnesota; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Syracuse, New York; and Tucson, Arizona.

These leaders direct, control and operate VA medical centers, which provide a range of services, from surgery to mental health care to dental services. They work at the facility level to direct the nature and scope of patient care delivered; set goals; make decisions; plan for the short and long term; and develop relationships with other federal agencies, the media, local and state government, and community-based organizations.

“These positions provide healthcare leaders with the chance to lead one of 150 medical centers that are on the forefront of a VA-wide transformation to better serve the more than 9 million Veterans enrolled in VA care,” said Darren Sherrard, Associate Director of Recruitment and Marketing at VA. “VA medical directors play important roles as VA expands choice, improves customer service, modernizes electronic health records and strives to make advances in the care of Veterans across the board.”

Executive Directors report to the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) Director for their region and are responsible for the effective and financially sound direction and operation of their medical centers.

These Title 38 positions provide a competitive salary and a wide array of benefits, including medical and dental insurance and 49 days of paid time off per year. Paid vacation accrues right away as does unlimited accumulated paid sick leave and 10 paid federal holidays.

Permanent, full-time, board-certified medical providers may get another five days of paid time off annually for continuing medical education (CME) in addition to a $1,000 annual CME allowance. These jobs may offer reimbursement of relocation benefits to qualifying applicants.
