During National Hispanic Heritage Month, today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Mercedes Cubria, the first Cuban-born woman to serve as an Army officer.

National Hispanic Heritage Month honors those who have positively influenced and enriched the U.S. and society. For the Fuentes family, that means celebrating the nine brothers who served in the military. Brothers Alfonso, David, Enrique, Ezequiel, Ismael, Marcos, Richard and Rudy all served in the Marine Corps, while Israel served in the Air Force.

Here at VA, we take time during this 31-day period to praise those men and women of Hispanic descent who didn’t just enjoy America’s freedoms, they chose to take up arms to defend those freedoms.
