Susan joined the ROTC program at Virginia State University because she felt a duty to serve her country. In September1990, Susan went to Saudi Arabia as a medical platoon officer.
Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Navy Veteran Norris "Tee" Taylor. Norris served in the United States Navy from 1984 to 2014. Norris deployed 16 times and participated in, among others, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the Gulf War. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Award and multiple campaign and unit awards.
Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Navy Veteran Ted Porretti. Ted served during World War II. Ted was born in 1917 and grew up in Waltham, Massachusetts. He was working for the government in Cape Cod, but when World War II broke out, he was transferred to Trinidad and Tobago. There, Ted oversaw the construction of airplane runways for the war effort. He hired and paid Trinidadian natives to build the airplane runways to support Allied planes flying from Trinidad and Tobago to North Africa.
Basil was sent to gunnery school and then joined a bombing crew flying out of Framlingham, England, as a waist gunner. From Aug. 1943 to June 5, 1944 Basil had flown 119 combat missions over Europe.
